What a big honour it is to judge the Border Terrier in the native country. I didn’t know what to expect because I haven’t been to Crufts or other shows to have a clean look at what I was presented on that May, 4th, 2014.
I myself live with Border Terriers most of my life now and I have seen the breed changing through the years. What the old breeders feared for years and years ago seems to happen: changing a working terrier into a show terrier. Meaning that the trimming is too short therefore missing the tweedy look, clipping belly, tail and buttocks, overangulation especially in hindquarters. Saying this I was really pleasantly surprised finding so many genuine Border Terriers during this show. Of course I know that coats can’t be in the best condition all year long so some specimens were rather short in trim but as long as I could feel the required harshness and see the correct double coat it was fine for me and only played a role in placing when there were more Borders with the same qualities. I didn’t see any faulty mouths, found only big strong teeth. Movement is – as in the rest of the world – still a problem in the breed. Especially front movement is an issue. When placing, movement was one of the criteria to place one Border higher than the other, but the right type, body proportions, spannability, thick pliable pelt and harsh double coat came first.
In some classes the quality was so high that some of the Borders left the ring unplaced while they were of excellent quality.
I really want to thank all the exhibitors for their sporting attitude in taking my decisions, for entering their dogs under me and give me a hard day’s work with 222 entered dogs and of course the committee for trusting me this honourable job and their hospitality during this weekend for me and my sister, who accompanied me. My congratulations to the breeders and owners for presenting such nice Border Terriers and keeping the breed on such high standard.

DCC, BIS, Red grizzle, caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring, he is a real showman, nice sized, excellent span, lovely strong otter head and nice keen expression, narrow all through, well angulated, hocks well let down, lovely tail set, thick pliable pelt, nice harsh double coat but it shouldn’t have been shorter in trim than today, sound mover moving with a lot of drive.
2nd - Oxcroft Richie (Mr J Price)
Grizzle, on the bigger side, still spannable, nice type of Border, lovely strong otter head, tail set is OK, would like to see the feet a touch stronger, double harsh coat, presents a nice outline, moves well though I would like to see a bit more angulation behind.

1st - Foxpaw Pipps Cross (Mr P & Mrs H Fulker)
Nice type of Border, on the smaller side but a size I’d like to see, masculine enough, nice otter head, lovely short tail, easy to span, nice double coat, I love his temperament, could do better in angulation but good enough, thick pliable pelt, presents a nice outline, moves well.
2nd - Peakrunner Arrows of Gold (Mrs S J Ruth)
Stronger dog, for me a bit too deep in chest, angulation is balanced but could be a touch more, a bit broad in front, double harsh coat, correct pliable pelt, good otter head although the stop could be a tad smoother, moves well seen from the side.

1st - Kgills King Of Swing At Awbrooksky (Mr & Miss Goddard)
True to type, well-built dog where everything is right and nothing is exaggerated, narrow all through, lovely size though for some people he probably shouldn’t be smaller, saying that he is a masculine dog, nice otter head, well angulated, thick pliable pelt, double harsh coat in nice show condition meaning not too short, nice tail set and correct carroty tail, well angulated, sound mover, just needs more ring experience to get the best out of him.
2nd - Badgerholme Epsom Jet JW ShCM (Mr B Dickinson & Miss T James)
Blue&tan of correct blue colour, nice outline, strong fluent topline, nice otter head with keen expression, thick double harsh coat, pliable thick pelt, strongly angulated which in fact shouldn’t be more, but it makes him a sound mover that moves with a lot of drive, for me he just is a bit too deep in chest, although spannable.

What a class! So many Borders that fit the standard well. Difficult to decide what dog to place because there were so many high quality Border Terriers.
1st - CH Glebeheath Jump The Gun JW (Mrs J Guvercin)
RDCC, True Border type, blue&tan of nice blue colour, lovely size and body proportions, easy to span, good bone, neat feet, balanced in angulation but for the picture perfect it could be a tad more, nevertheless he is a very sound and strong mover, thick pliable pelt, harsh double coat in nice show condition, nice carroty tail and tail set, presenting himself very well which makes him a real eye catcher, the smoother topline of the CC winner beat him in the challenge.
2nd - Int/Nor CH Bohunt Sweep The Board (Ms E Winberg)
Another eye catcher, well-built dog with nice body lines, strong nice otter head, well filled up, strong topline, easy to span, lovely tail set and correct carroty tail, thick pliable pelt, neat feet, well angulated, nice bone, strong mover but in front movement he had to give in on the nr. 1 in this class being a bit loose.

A lovely class of youngsters. Which is a promise for the future. My winner in this class is still very young but has all the features I like and moved like a dream till the very end. The others were unfortunate to meet her in this class because they were of a high quality too.
1st - Lady Mary of Foxpaw (Mr P & Mrs H Fulker)
Best Puppy Bitch, BPIS, RBCC, BOS, Well-built grizzle puppy bitch, feminine otter head that is well filled up, narrow all through, well ribbed up, lovely top- and underline and body proportions, excellent angulations, very nice tail set and carroty tail, hocks well let down, neat strong feet, harsh double coat, her ears seem still a bit big but in time she will grow into her ears, moves very steadily and true and kept showing until the very end of the show, all those skills making her an eye catcher though still very young, very much the same type as the CC winning bitch.
2nd - Mcbrock Miss Amelia (Mr & Mrs J R Mann)
Nice type of Border though a bit stronger than nr. 1, well angulated, lovely tail set and carroty tail, thick pliable pelt, harsh double coat, presenting a very nice outline, she just had to give in on the nr 1 on head which is correct but not as strong in foreface as the nr 1 and with rather heavy ears, she also moved very well considering her age.
