I would like to thank the BTC club, for giving me a second chance to judge this, the most prestigious of the breed clubs championship shows. I was judge elect in 2010, but caught the awful Noro virus the night before I was due to judge and spent the next two days flat out.
The new venue that the committee has found, has to be lauded. It is large, airy, light, the flooring is excellent. The car park looked huge. From a judges point of view I could see all the dogs clearly at any time. Congratulations on a super venue.
My two stewards, Chris Davis and Liz Barratt were so very organised and kept me informed and on time throughout the day, with good humour lots of smiles and attention to detail. With such a lovely entry numbers wise, it was a long day. Thank you both.
Living in Canada now, it was a real pleasure to judge dogs that I had mostly not seen. Obviously some of the older ones were mere youngsters before I left and it was nice to see how they had progressed through the years. I found no missing testicles, mouths on the whole were good, with only a few missing teeth or one or two misaligned. Heads were in general better overall than when I left, with more who carried a moderately broad backskull and also a lot more with very good underjaw, something one had to look hard to find a few years ago. Coats were on the whole, good, there were a very few however, who had greasy and dirty coats, this I feel is completely unnecessary. A few arrived without their coats, this is just unfortunate as dogs do not know about our ambitions in regard to shows, and if the coat needs to come out then so be it! Feet in some instances were weak, with some flat footed and others harefooted, this breed needs to have really good tight feet, small with thick pads and be well knuckled, poor feet make the whole outline of the dog look wrong. The worst fault I found, as usual were fronts, all the usual suspects were there, wide fronts, narrow fronts, flicking wrists etc. I do begin to wonder if we will ever get this completely right, but if we are breeders looking to the future, we must be hard on this most prevalent fault, and do not use these dogs and bitches in our breeding programmes. Bitches had the most quality through the entry, again, this is usual, however the dogs that were good, were very very good, and the best, were exceptional. Size does need to be watched, this is a somewhat cyclical thing, but there were some big dogs and bitches in the ring. The first and most important words in our standard…â€Essentially a working terrier if it cannot be spanned, it is too big. In general I feel the breed in the country of origin is in pretty good shape, the top percentage of the dogs I judged were quite lovely and had breed type to spare. In my critique you will no doubt notice expressions I use again and again. I find certain things are ubiquitous (but none the less hugely important to breed type) and have my pet ways of describing them, I hope you forgive my industrial repetition in some regards.

Lovely moderate dog, with a good head and expression. Shoulders and front assembly are good, his rib is narrow, he stands on good legs and feet. Jacket was dry and in good form. Spanned easily and moved nicely around the ring. He was in hard condition.

1st - CH Fehmarn Magic Lantern JW (Mrs J Morton Shaw)
13 year old in such super condition. Nice otter head, with a good muzzle and plenty of underjaw. Somewhat grey around the face now, but well earned. He is still spannable, his jacket was in the very best of condition, his pelt is thick. Moved handily and well both ways. A very worthy champion and an older gentleman who kept the honour of borders well today. BVIS oldest VIS.
2nd - CH/Nord CH Otterbobs Ninezergh (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
9year old in great condition, this dog I have judged before, in fact I gave him his third and qualifying CC. He still is sound, typy and a great mover. His jacket and pelt straight from the top drawer. Carries the head of true border terrier. Loved him.

1st - Otterwood Caius (Mr M J & Mrs J M Hollingsbee)
Smart blue and tan puppy. Head is well developed for his age, and he has neat ears. His shoulder angulation is ok and he has a narrow rib. His jacket is good and he has plenty of ticking with lots more coming in. Hindquarter could have a tad more angulation but his hocks are well let down. Moved nicely both ways.
2nd - Windleaves Black Magic Over Alderseadale (Mr D M and Mrs N J Chandler)
Just over 6 month baby in good jacket, blue and very well ticked. Promising head that needs time to develop, shoulders could be a tad more angulated. His rib is a good shape, he has a racy hindquarter and he kept a good topline on the move.

1st - Dandyhow Aston Martin (Mrs K M Irving)
Grizzle and Tan puppy, showed on a loose lead. His mouth was good, super keen expression, I would have preferred a tad shorter muzzle. Shoulders were not as well angulated as I would like but flowed well into a super rib, and he was extremely well made behind. He moved out well and confidently keeping a good topline and his tail and set were very good.
2nd - Tythrop Timepiece (Mrs J L Lee)
Blue and tan of very good type and make. Extremely harsh dry coat, with good ticking, over a grand pelt. His head was typical, eye keen and ear placement good. For me he needed a touch more angulation behind to give a more driving hind movement. This boy and his sister who won puppy bitch, were both super, typy pups.

1st - Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Mr C Hall & Miss L Ellis)
Dog with a great attitude, commanding the ring, he has presence and he knows it. His head is good in all ways, his mouth, muzzle and head planes are all correct so giving a super otter like look. His neck blends well into nicely angulated shoulders and he is well ribbed back, he stands on good legs and feet. He has a racy hindquarter which powers him along well, and his movement is good both ways. His jacket and pelt were as they should be, harsh, and thick respectively. Topline and tailset are excellent, he has a good carroty tail. For me there was just a bit too much of him but his quality cannot be denied.
2nd - Tojamatt Warlord (Mr & Mrs D Matthews)
Masculine dog with a good headpiece, strong muzzle and keen eye. In full harsh jacket, has extremely good legs and feet, so important in our breed. Very easily spanned rib, well laid back. Lovely racy hindquarter, well let down hocks. Moved out well and with economy.

Another in fairly full coat, of the right texture. He has a super head, good mouth and enough underjaw. Nicely angulated at both ends and was easily spanned. Narrow all through. Moved well and with confidence.

This lad is another very nice border, he has a grand head, neat ears, his expression is keen. His shoulders could have a tad more angulation. An easily spanned dog, with a good narrow rib, he is angulated correctly behind and his hocks are well let down. 3rd in the junior class. Full brother to second in this class.
2nd - Cedarhill Starmaker (Mr D Fegan)
This very nice border, all male, unfortunately left his jacket at home, his pelt is as it should be, thick. Lovely breed type, good head and eye, mouth good and plenty of underjaw. Loved his angles at both ends and he moved out smartly both ways. He spanned so nicely and his rib is narrow. Hocks well let down. Tail short and carroty and set correctly. I liked him a lot and when he brings his coat with him, the placings could easily change.

Blue dog, masculine head, with keen expression, powerful muzzle, he carries a good underjaw. Neck flows well into his nicely angulated shoulders, and his rib is spannable and the right shape. His well ticked harsh jacket covered a good pelt. Racy hindquarter with well let down hocks. This dog was very fit and well muscled.

Another super type of border, lovely strong head with good mouth and underjaw. Nice shoulders into a spannable rib carried well back. Jacket and pelt excellent. Racy hindquarter and moved well both ways.

Real honest border type. Good head with lovely flow through his minimal stop to a moderately broad skull. Strong underjaw. Workmanlike bodylines with adequate angled shoulder a correctly shaped spannable rib, super underline and a racy hindquarter with lovely well set down hocks. Moved out well and kept a good topline.
2nd - Secret Attraction (Mr T James)
Masculine dog carrying a good head. He was not in the best of jackets today, but has a good pelt. A tad too deep through his chest making him have more of a cut up underneath than I would like. He moved out well both ways.

Stands over plenty of ground on good legs and feet has a racy hindquarterwith well let down hocks, he moved out very well to take this class. Good honest sort of border.
2nd - Ycart Best Shot Remmington (Mr K K Fraser, Mrs T J & Butler)
Lovely type of border, as I have come to expect from this exhibitor, in good hard condition. Head appealed in many ways, mouth, strong muzzle, keen eye, neat ears. Angles were good at both ends and his harsh dry jacket covered a decent pelt. Kept an excellent topline on the move and his tail and set were good.

This male is outstanding. He has a strong masculine head, with a lovely short strong muzzle and a moderately broad skull, his eye is keen. Neck into shoulders is excellent, the shoulder angulation just right, his ribs were some of the best of the day, narrow, spannable and correct in shape. His jacket was harsh and full, covering a thick pliable pelt. Hindquarters were racy and his hocks well let down. He moved around the ring with purpose, showing good economical movement throughout. He did everything he needed to convince me he was DCC & BIS.
2nd - CH Dandyhow Dr Walter (Mrs K M Irving)
Super male with excellent head and expression, dark keen eye. His neck into his shoulders was lovely and the shoulders themselves were correct. Another with really good legs and feet. His jacket was harsh, but not in the first flush, pelt thick. Rib could have been narrower and a shade longer. Hind end for me could have had more angulation. He moved very well both ways. Keeps a good topline and his tail and set were as they should be. Res CC.

This young bitch was in my eye from the moment she entered the ring. She has presence and is a very attractive border type. Blue and tan jacket, in super form, well ticked harsh and dry, thick and pliable pelt. Her feminine head is strong, even for her tender age, with good planes, eye is keen, teeth good, and her muzzle strong, ears neat and falling correctly. Neck is moderate easing into lovely shoulders, her rib is narrow and correct. A racy hindquarter and well let down hocks complete the standing picture. On the move she is strong and positive, although she needs to settle in front, where she comes toward you somewhat narrow. I loved her overall and was very pleased to award her BPIS.
2nd - Kighill Lil Bear (Mr B & Mrs K A Newsome)
Very smart puppy showing a super outline. Lovely attitude and enjoying her day out. Feminine head, good necked easing into well angulated shoulder, legs and feet good. Could have a tad more length of rib. Hindquarter is racy, she moved with verve and confidence for one so young. Very nice puppy.

Blue and tan out of the top drawer. Lovely outline and showing so well. Gorgeous jacket full, well ticked and harsh, carried over a thick pelt. Front assembly is excellent and her legs are good with well knuckled feet. Hindquarter for me could have a tad more angulation but can take little away from this pleasing puppy.
2nd - Daluce Fools Gold (Mr J & Mrs H M Thomas)
Another typy puppy, put down to perfection. Head is feminine and eye varminty. Her jacket is topclass and pelt good. Nicely ribbed back and she has a good underline. She has super bone and stands over the ground well, moved well and with grand economy around the ring. This was a very nice class of puppies.

What can one say about this young lady, she appealed as she came into the ring, her femininity oozing from her. She is a good size, not overdone in this department at all, I feel if weighed she would be bang on. Upon assessment she did not disappoint, her head is all border, strong muzzle big teeth, keen expression. Moderate neck into beautiful shoulders and a narrow correctly shaped rib, giving a good underline. Her racy hindquarter powered her around the ring and she came and went cleanly. She is a very fit, attractive bitch whom I was very happy to award the Res CC.
2nd - Comberdown Thistle (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
Blue and tan with a beautifully ticked harsh and dry jacket. Head moderately broad with all the requisites, good bite, muzzle and ears well set. Body shape is correct but for me a tad more angulation behind would complete a nice picture.

Blue and tan bitch in very full coat. Well ticked. She has a good head, with plenty of fill under the eye, good bite and a strong muzzle. Well angled shoulders a good rib, which was very easily spanned, short loin and a racy hindquarter all come together to make a nice package. She moved very well both ways and was a no nonsense workmanlike bitch.
2nd - Gameway Blue Charm At Southash (Mr J & Mrs I M Southam)
Another good blue and tan, with a super harsh jacket. Slightly longer in muzzle than one, and her shoulder could have a tad more angulation. However her rib was well laid and very spannable, her loin short and strong, giving her an excellent underline. Good legs and feet.

Easily spanned well shaped rib, short strong loin and a very attractive and racy hindquarter complete a picture of a bitch of super breed type who moved out handily and never stopped showing.

Shoulders legs and feet, all just right, well ribbed back and spanned handily, very racy hindquarter which drove her around the ring with balanced ease. A very good class of quality bitches, pleased to award her first place.

Litter sister to winner of this class and all the same remarks apply here, I stood and looked at them both, trying to separate them, and it was simply down to this one being stacked somewhat too straight behind. These are both grand, quality bitches, congratulations to the owner, and breeders.

This bitch was for me the find of the day. She gave me goose bumps and took my breath away. She has all I look for in a border terrier and she has it in spades! Her head is lovely, her expression keen and varminty, her mouth and muzzle correct. Her beautiful moderate neck fits so well into her shoulders which are correctly angulated and allow such ease of movement through her front. Her rib is well set back and she is spanned with ease. Short strong loin and racy hindquarters, with lovely thigh and second thigh, well let down hocks. Jacket was harsh and dry, and her pelt thick and pliable. She powered around the ring with driving action and she was full of presence. I was thrilled to award her the bitch CC, RBIS and Best Otter Head.
2nd - Manorcroft Rock on Ruby (Mr T & Mrs L Palmer)
Another bitch of quality, unfortunate on this day to come up against the winner on such form. Good headed lady with a feminine but strong head, shoulders well angled and a grand rib, easily spanned. Loin short and a racy hindquarter, would have preferred slightly more angulation here but her hocks were well let down and she moved out well.
