I appreciate that at this time of year with both dark mornings and early sunsets travelling and showing your Borders might not seem like the most enjoyable way to spend your weekend. So a sincere thank you to all those exhibitors who attended my first Championship Show appointment. We were the only terrier breed to have CC’s on offer and I had a lovely entry of 122 dogs. The venue and ring allocated were both excellent. No draughts or noisy blow-heaters. It was actually very civilised. Thank you to my steward who was efficient and supportive throughout. It made my task so much easier.
I was surprised to find that many exhibits, whilst prima facie, moved soundly, lacked the drive that is so important if they are to do a real day’s work. I was also a little disappointed that many Borders had tight pelts, which sometimes were thick but lacked that looseness that could get them, quite literally, out of a tight hole!
I was delighted with my overall winners and, I thank all those who graciously accepted my decisions.

1st - Onthill Amaretto (Mr R & Mrs A Ramus)
Lovely dark grizzle youngster of just 6½ months with dark eye and kind expression. Excellent head with large strong teeth. Has a narrow front and good length of rib, well carried back. In good coat. Moved and showed well particularly for one so young. I’m sure he has a great future ahead of him. Pushed hard for BP but just lost out at the final hurdle as I suspect he was a little tired after his long day.
2nd - Karison Kranberrie (Miss K Johnson)
Another real baby of just 6 months, with a lovely otter head. Grizzle and tan in great coat with harsh texture. Nicely balanced with good outline and nice length of tail and tailset. Moved ok but I think his nerves got the better of him, I am sure he will improve with practice and experience. I shall look out for his progress in the months to come.

1st - Cynetkoy's Cool Hand Luke (Mr S D Watson & Mrs A S Kenna)
Alone in the class, grizzle dog of 11 months. Mature for his age and doesn’t need to grow on much more. He had a masculine head and dark ear and his coat was still coming through. Showed well and his movement was fine.

1st - Dandyhow Dr Walter (Mrs K M Irving)
Grizzle and tan dog of 15 months, nice size, excellent coat and well presented. I liked his overall balance and type. Pleasing head and good length of neck. Correct topline and tail length and set. Preferred front movement to rear.
2nd - Ragatam Newmarket At Badgerholme (Mr & Mrs B Dickinson)
Another nice grizzle and tan youngster of almost 14 months. In excellent double coat with a good scissor bite and large teeth. He was short of whisker but had good strong jaw and a pleasant otter head. Narrow front and good topline. Moved and showed well. Just preferred the type of 1.
Delighted to hear that he completed his JW today by winning the next class

Pleasing young blue and tan of nice proportions. He had a lovely head and expression and good large teeth. This dog had a wonderfully thick pelt and moved well. Whilst spannable he was at the top end size-wise and doesn’t want to fill out or get any bigger.

1st - Kersfell Comply Or Die (Mrs M Sneddon)
Grizzle and tan dog in perfect coat and top condition. This exhibit had one of the best pelts of the day, handfuls of it, which was lovely to find. He had a beautifully level topline and moved well with plenty of drive.
2nd - Onthill Fernando (Mr R & Mrs A M Ramus)
This was a nice handy workmanlike grizzle and tan dog who unfortunately was completely out of coat today and this cost him the class. Lots to like about him such as a good pelt, nice head, correct topline and good on the move.

Light grizzle and tan with an excellent coat and wonderful loose pelt. Good head with strong jaw and teeth. Narrow front and ribs, which were well carried back. Moved with drive and enthusiasm and maintained his excellent topline on the move. Immaculately presented. He never stopped showing and looking like he wanted to be there. You certainly wouldn’t think he was a few days short of becoming a veteran! Dog CC
2nd - Ethlencoral Pip of Ottaswell JW (Mr D & Mrs G M Hunt)
Another lovely dog. On top form today and pushed hard for top honours. Beautifully presented and in excellent coat and good thick pelt. Lovely reach of neck and correct topline. Moved soundly front and rear, and with enthusiasm and drive. Super otter head with good scissor bite and strong teeth. Well deserved RCC.

1st - Kersfell Comet JW (Sneddon, Margaret)
The only entry for this class but a worthy winner. Another one from this kennel presented in perfect coat and condition. Both his dark grizzle coat and pelt were fabulous. The pelt was loose and thick and so much of it to get hold of. Nice length of rib, good angulation and moved with drive.

Sweet feminine youngster of 7½ months. Still a baby but showed really well in class and for BP challenge. In excellent coat and with good pelt. Had a good length of rib. Liked her overall type and she presented a balanced picture. Moved well. Delighted to award her BP and then to hear that later she went TPG3
2nd - Kersfell Chorus Girl (Mrs M Sneddon)
Lots to like about this baby of 6½ months. Still very immature and needs time. Strong teeth and jaw with excellent scissor bite. Has lovely long length of rib and is narrow throughout. I liked her small neat feet but her coat looked to be just past its best but still neatly presented by her owner.

Another pleasing grizzle youngster of 9 months not in quite such perfect coat as 1 but nicely proportioned and with good reach of neck. Narrow and balanced throughout with racy outline. Would have preferred to see her carrying a tiny bit more weight. Moved well.

Attractive feminine red bitch of 14 months who stood out in this class. Pleasing head and expression. In good coat and had a good pelt. Nicely sized and proportioned with good length of body and rib. Definitely the best mover of the class.
2nd - Earthtaw Catkin (Miss J A & Mr M W V Haydon & Gibbings)
Another feminine bitch in good coat. Pleasing head and correct bite. A little leggier that 1 and not such a sound mover as the winner.

Small neat bitch who moved and showed well. Her coat was just about lasting but probably past its best but clearly is of good harsh texture. Good reach of neck and narrow in body. Nice in profile.

Attractive otter head and pleasing expression for this light red bitch. Good mouth and scissor bite. Of an over all good size, spannable and moved soundly. Nice type although not groomed to advantage.

1st - Gameway Margarita At Southash (Mr J & Mrs I M Southam)
Nice handy size and good proportions on this bitch who was in excellent coat and having a good pelt. Small neat feet and clean front. Attractive otter head but expression slightly spoilt by too much “eyebrow left on. Best mover of the class.
2nd - Alcumlow Patience (Mr P, Mrs B & Miss R Barber)
Lovely angulation on this bitch. In profile looked deep but I was easily able to span her. Had an old fashioned longer head with attractive colouring and nice dark eye. In fine coat and had a fabulous loose thick pelt. Good front movement and shown beautifully by her handler. Just lost out on placing on her tail carriage on the move.

1st - Plushcourt The Bees Knees In Thoraldby (Mrs B A Judge)
I was spoilt for choice in this, the strongest class of the day. Lots of lovely bitches in fine form for me to choose from. Difficult choice but the winner was this beautiful blue and tan bitch superbly shown and presented. She never put a foot wrong from the moment she entered the ring. Narrow front and excellent topline. Moved with drive round the ring and as though she owned it. In excellent coat with a loose pelt. She had a beautiful head accompanied by very dark eyes. In top condition today. Couldn’t be beaten for style and overall quality. Delighted to award her her third CC and BOB.
2nd - Brumberhill Bonjour (Mr S A Mcpherson)
Another beautiful bitch also presented professionally and in top condition. Lovely harsh texture to her thick double coat. Nice type and size great topline which she maintained throughout. She moved with drive which many exhibits did not not today despite moving soundly. A beautiful bitch who totally deserved her RCC

12 year old grizzle bitch, who happens to be dam of 1. Also in fine condition with immaculately white and correct dentition. Looking very distinguished with her greying whiskers . Her general condition and enthusiasm were a credit to her owner. Moved well.
