I would like to thank the East Anglian Border Terrier Club for their kind invitation to judge their 2015 Championship Show. It was both an honour and a pleasure to accept this appointment. Thank you to the committee for their hospitality, and special acknowledgement to Bev, Laurence and Zoe Jackson for their efficient stewarding and keeping everything running smoothly throughout the day.
I terms of exhibits, there were many difficult decisions during the day and some real quality dogs were left unplaced. In general, the quality was very good and the majority of dogs were spannable and I only saw one example of an incorrect bite. All dogs were entire and as is usual some coats were exceptional whilst others were either just coming in or past their best.
There were a few examples of heads that are untypical of the breed, in that they lack strength of foreface, width of skull and have eyes that are too close together – these are not what I would describe as ‘like that of an otter’.
On a more positive note I was very happy with all my winners, believing them to be excellent examples of the breed and would like to say thank you to all exhibitors for allowing me the honour of judging their dogs

1st - Navy Seal By Tyrian (Mrs K A Dean)
A nice type puppy dog. Head is developing nicely with a correct scissor bite. Good length of neck and top line leading to a nice tail set. Good bend of stifle and developing muscle. Small tight feet and good blue and tan coat. Front movement needs to tighten up a little up but that will come with age.
2nd - Stowthorney Mr Tickle (Mr R Brewster & Ms J Green)
A slightly rangier dog than 1st place. Same comments apply with regard to his head, good scissor bite. Straight front with well laid back shoulders. Nice proportions but not quite the rear drive of 1st.
3rd - Cynetkoy Carbon Footprint (Mr S D Watson & Mrs A S Kenna)

1st - Bandicoot Doc Martin (Ms V L K Docwra)
A lovely puppy that stood out for type in this class with everything in place, shown in hard condition. Good otter head, keen expression and well filled under the eyes. Straight front with nice small cat like feet. Double coat just coming through. Moved well around the ring. He is up to size and doesn’t need to grow any more.
2nd - Hemlockstone Nimrod (Mr R H & Miss J A Bryan & Pounder)
Nicely proportioned puppy, with good head and in good condition, not the bend of stifle of 1st place. Moved with confidence around the ring. A little short of coat and lost out on his overall finish today.
3rd - Baillieswells Brora (Professor A S Milton)
Entries: 6 Absentees: 3
1st - Gameway Mcvitie (Mrs P Clark)
Correct length of neck and shoulders on this young dog. Racy lines with good proportioned head and lovely dark eye. Narrow build with ribs carried well back. Not an over done border, with good hindquarters and in excellent coat. Moved well
2nd - Cedarhill Once Upon a Time (Mrs C Dean)
A nice type blue and tan dog. Good head and muzzle, ears a little active on the move which detracts from the overall look. Correctly proportioned body, with evidence of a good coat. Moved ok.
3rd - Barnby Caramel Wafer At Bimandi (Mrs M J Holmes)
Entries: 7 Absentees: 1
Two nice borders, both fit the bill and could easily change places on another day
1st - Karison Keiser (Miss K Johnson)
True to type, all round honest Border terrier. Good head, well filled under the eye and strong muzzle. Straight front, nicely presented feet, and lovely profile. Correct for body muscle with nice bend of stifle. The best of double coat. Moved out well.
2nd - Oxcroft Freelander (Miss J Price)
Nice blue and tan in hard condition. Strong masculine head, as typical of this kennel. Straight front. Feet as they should be, small and cat like. Nice body lines and good bend of stifle. A little short of coat today, but a loose thick pelt. Moved ok.

A dog that I have judged and placed before. A smart looking grizzle dog of correct proportions, although slightly heavier than 1. Good head with well- placed ears. Straight in front and correct shoulder placement. Well bodied up, good ribs and plenty of strength in loin. Moved ok.

What a lot of quality in this class which made the decisions for the first three places exceptionally difficult.
1st - Wadesleia Mr Herriot (Mrs H A & Mr A Fletcher)
A dog that I have admired from the ring side and he didn’t disappoint. An exquisite picture as he walked around the ring topped off with an exceptional otter head, excellent width of skull, good keen expression and plenty of strength under the eye. Excellent straight front, good shoulder placement and neat cat like feet with thick pads. A racy dog with good muscle tone, ribs laid well back, spannable, strong loin and good bend of stifle. Level top line with a lovely carrot tail straight off the back as it should be. Presented in excellent double coat, he moved around the ring with both drive, confidence whilst holding his top line level. Pleased to award him DCC
2nd - Benattivo Betfred (Mrs S J & Mr C P Girling)
The last time that I judged I gave this dog Best Puppy in Show. He is an excellent example of the breed with a proper otter head, well developed skull and strong muzzle. Good bone, muscle tone and lovely body lines. Well angulated hindquarters. Moved and showed well, coat not as well through as I would like. Unlucky to meet 1st today.
3rd - Hawcoat Lord George (Mrs E J & Miss R C Larner)

A class out of the Top Draw, some exceptional borders which are a joy to go over – a lovely class to judge.
1st - CH Badgerholme Epsom Jet JW ShCM (Mr B Dickinson & Miss T James)
Another dog that I have watched with interest from the side of the ring, he didn’t disappoint as he was presented in his best bib and tucker. An attractive blue and tan dog with lovely body lines in profile. A proper otter head, plenty of strength under the eye, a strong muzzle and well placed ears completing the picture. Good shoulder placement and lovely straight, level top line with tail straight off his back Excellent hindquarters with the right amount of muscle. Presented in an excellent double coat. Moved around the ring with style carrying a level top line. RDCC – this was a very close decision when coming to the challenge
2nd - CH Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Mr C Hall & Miss L Ellis)
Another real quality dog, who is a showman through and through. He showed himself to be a quality exhibit as he moved around the ring with sound movement front and aft. A racier built dog than 1st, with another excellent otter head with neat correctly placed ears which fall close to his cheeks. Pleasant in profile, good length of neck, running into clean shoulders, straight front, well-muscled body, good hindquarters, tidy feet and a good double coat. Very little to choose between 1st and 2nd, shame he met 1st place in such good condition today.

This was a super class of quality bitches who were a pleasure to go over and judge
1st - Cedarhill Wish Upon a Star JW (Mrs C Dean)
I have judged this bitch previously and it is nice to see how she has developed into real quality as she as matured. A lovely border of correct size, make up and proportions. Superb head, strong yet quintessentially feminine. Well filled under the eye, correct ear placement and strong muzzle with correct scissor bite. An excellent front – straight with correctly placed, smooth shoulders and just the correct amount of bone. A balanced profile with correct rib and strong loin. Nice tight feet, presented perfectly on thick pads. Shown in the best of double coat. Good angulation, moved out well covering the ground effortlessly. Pleased to award her BCC and BIS.

Another quality grizzle bitch that I have admired from the ring side. She has a a lovely balanced profile and was beautifully presented in the best of condition with a super double coat. Excellent shoulder placement with super confirmation. A difficult decision as many of the same comments from 1st apply – just preferred the head of 1st by a whisker. Chose to award her RCC.

1st - Benattivo Best Bet Karison (Miss K Johnson)
A lovely grizzle border bitch, with a pretty feminine look about her. A super had of the correct proportions with plenty of strength in her face and jaw. She has a narrow straight front that sets her up to be well put together bitch. Her shoulders are laid well back, good rib and she has the correct amount of bone. She is not over done in any way what so ever. A first class, harsh double coat and loose pelt. She moved around the ring with style. She is a good example of the standard – essentially a working terrier. Considered her for the top honours – very difficult decision to leave her out.
2nd - Am CH Sulan Easy Does It (Mrs S J Baxter)
A finer built bitch – lovely in profile and on the move. A good otter head with a keen varmint expression. A clean straight front, without a hint of coarseness in her shoulders. Correct bend of stifle and strong hindquarters which enabled her to move around the ring with confidence. Good double coat and loose pelt
