I would like to thank the Midland Border Terrier Club committee for the opportunity to judge this year’s Joint club show. Many thanks to my two ring stewards Bob and Liz Wright for the smooth running of the ring and the cups of coffee. It was an experience to go over so many dogs of different types; this made my job difficult at times, as each one had different attributes to the next. A few classes I found very hard to decide who my winners would be for this reason. Is the breed getting better or worse? I do not think I am the first to mention that there are too many foreign heads and plain faces with no expression. The breed standard states “a head like that of an otter” and “essentially a working terrier”. Confirmation and movement, I think has improved a little, but the heads and strength of the dogs has declined. When I looked at some of the dogs, I liked them but then had to remind myself that they where dogs not bitches. Thank you to all exhibitors for letting me go over your dogs and the gracious way most of you accepted my decisions.

1st - Stowthorney Mr Tickle (Mr R Brewster & Ms J Green)
An eight month old, red grizzle dog, up to size with a narrow front and good lay of shoulders. A good length of rib and a level top line. A good bend of stifle and showed well.
2nd - Markington Apollo (Mrs M Houseman)
A seven month old Grizzle dog of correct size, with a nice length of body. Pleasing otter head and straight front just lost his top line on the move as it sloped down to his shoulders.
3rd - Navy Seal By Tyrian (Mrs K A Dean)
A seven month old blue and tan puppy with a good length of neck and top line leading to a nice tail set. Good bend of stifle with small tight feet. Shown in good condition. Just a little long in the muzzle, but with a correct scissor bite.

1st - Ravenside Raise Your Glass (Mr M Lowry)
A ten month old puppy, up to size, and needs to be no heavier. Good width of skull, but the length of his muzzle needs to be shorter in proportion. Lovely length of neck, flat ribs and good length of back. Good bend of stifle and nice small feet.
2nd - Markington Apollo (Mrs M Houseman)
3rd - Alcumlow Parsley (Mr P, Mrs B & Miss R Barber)
Well made with moderate bone, a good bite, narrow front and nice laid back shoulders, loose, thick pelt, movement a little erratic. Good body lines and confirmation, his head and bottom jaw need more substance to balance the picture.

2nd - Stineval Napoleon JW (Mr & Mrs A G Horner)
Another red grizzle shown in great condition although shorter in the back and I just preferred the length of rib of 1st. Nice small feet, good bend of stifle, moved with drive although movement a little lose in front. Showed as well as ever.

1st - Karison Keiser (Miss K Johnson)
Super harsh coat, I liked his size, length of rib, outline and short carrot tail. You need to get your hands on him to feel what is under his super jacket and pelt. Easily spanned, with a narrow straight front.

Racy dog with lovely body lines of good proportions. Covered the ground well on the move.
3rd - Plushcourt The Boss Bee At Manorcroft (Miss C Broomhead & Mr D Bean)

Deeper in his brisket, and wider in front than 1st. Head quite strong, with pleasing expression.
3rd - Howthwaite Grainsgill (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)

1st - Ravenside Rumours About Caldewgate (Mr A E Burke)
Good otter head and kind eye, this dog had character about him and this shone through. He enjoyed himself and was engaging throughout. Deeper in his chest than 2nd but moved well and this is what won him the RDCC. Straight front, good laid back shoulders, easily spanned and good angulation of hindquarters.
2nd - Benattivo Betfred (Mrs S J & Mr C P Girling)
Smaller than 1st, this dark red dog in beautiful coat and condition with excellent pelt. Not quite as masculine as 1st but balanced. His head was of a different type to the two either side. He has a narrow front, good bone and tight feet. Strong loin and well muscled rear, better rear movement than front.
3rd - Tojamatt Warlord (Mr & Mrs D Matthews)
A stronger dog than the other two, with a slightly wider front and when he pulled on the move this was exaggerated. Good strong otter head and presented in a lovely thick double coat and stood well. Not a lot to choose between them

1st - Ottaswell Palamedes (Mr D & Mrs G M Hunt)
A lovely otter head, with small ears and good movement and covered the ground well, small tight feet. Plenty of muscle just needed a little more flesh on his loins to balance him up.
2nd - CH Rus/Slo/Rom CH Stella Rover Akko (Ms M A Privezentseva)
Head not as good as 1st, longer in the muzzle and bottom jaw not as powerful. Good length of neck into good shoulders f neck just seemed a little short in the leg for the length of his body.

1st - CH Badgerbeck Uncle Fester (Miss L M Jenkins)
My first impression of this dog was he is obviously not afraid of the dark and capable of doing a day’s work. Under his good thick jacket is a narrow dog with good lay of shoulders and he is not overdone in any way. Easily spanned, flat ribs of a good length, correct size and weight. He has a good head with a keen expression. A balanced dog, shown in a fit condition. Moved well. Showed himself off better, in the challenge than in his class. DCC & BIS.
