I had been looking forward immensely to judging my first breed club open show in the UK. I sincerely thank the officers and membership for inviting me and most importantly, I would thank those exhibitors who attended and valued my integrity and opinion enough to give me the opportunity of going over their dogs.
I was looking for Borders that had all the good breed type points as laid out in our standard, combined with the correct physical construction to be able to cover the rough hilly ground of the region from which the breed originated. I thoroughly went through the entry to find these attributes, and judged with these thoughts in mind right down to my 4th placings.
I am pleased to be able to say that I had no dirty oily coats, or smelly dogs and that every dog had clean white teeth. This is all down to good housekeeping (or dog keeping) and I must commend you all on these points.
However, I was very disappointed to find that three exhibitors presented me with dogs, which had kinked bumpy tails.
I only found one tooth problem and that was a set of badly twisted lower incisors, which were slightly obstructing a scissor bite, but unfortunately, I was further disappointed to find dogs with weak muzzles and no strength to the underjaw. A Border needs to be able to force home an attack on its advesary and to do so must use his//her strong jaws and big teeth. This part of the borders anatomy is of immense importance to its function. I would consider this a fault, which would seriously interfere with a terrier’s ability to work.
I found a variety of movement problems. Some had stilted rear movement, with feet in underneath the dog and lacking propulsion. One dog that crabbed. Dogs with fronts toeing in, some more so than others, and some with wide front movement, or flicking one, or other foot.
Ultimately, there were some very good examples of our breed, that possessed all, or most, of the qualities I was searching for. Some of these did not get top awards on the day, but nevertheless had enough breed type and quality of movement to forge ahead and have a promising future I am sure.

1st - Karison Klaret (Miss K Johnson)
Nice sized grizzle and tan puppy of 7 months with a lovely border head. Good muzzle and correct bite. Correct shaped ears and has dark pleasing eyes. Good reach of neck and narrow body with ribs well back and was easily spanned. He had a superb harsh coat for one so young. Level top line and correct shaped tail, which is set on just right. Enough bone and small tight feet. This one had a buzz to him today. Showed himself off to advantage. Took BPIS with his showiness and excellent coat.
2nd - Braemen's Lucas (Mr A & Mrs J Wilson)
Typical border head. Good muzzle and teeth. He had a good coat and moved out well enough. A larger, stronger puppy than first.
3rd - Lairehope Starman (Lothian)

Eight-month-old grizzle and tan with a superb strong head and good muzzle. Correct bite. He had a decent coat. Plenty of substance with this puppy. Sturdy, with good bone but not overdone. Spannable. He looked to be correct when in motion. A promising young dog. I would hope he does not grow on too much more.
2nd - Karison Kranberrie (Miss K Johnson)
A finer built puppy than first. He has a very nice outline. Was easily spanned with ribs well back and strong loin. Moved well enough.

This was a good class of young dogs.
1st - Irton Morse Code (Mr & Mrs D Fryer)
Grizzle dog, 15 months of age. He was presented in a superb full coat, which made him look big but he was easily spanned. He has an impressive border head and nice dark eyes and correct ears. I could both see and feel the strength in this dogs jaws and this came with big white teeth. If I were a fox, I would seriously hate to meet this boy. He moved out well on straight strong well-boned legs and good feet with thick pads.
2nd - Fehmarn Highland Encounter (Mrs E J Scott)
He scored well in movement. Presented in good coat. Easily spanned. Nice length of body with good top line and tail set.

This one went better after I asked the handler to move him a little more quickly for me and to try to keep his head up. He has a good head and nice reach of neck. Easily spanned and he came to hand well.

19 months of age. A grizzle and tan dog, with otter-like head. Correct bite and strong muzzle. He has a good reach of neck, coming to a well-angulated front assembly. Narrow, with a good length of body. Deep in chest with ribs extending well back and a strong loin. He was easily spanned and came to hand well. He had a tight wiry harsh coat. On the move, this dog could not be faulted today. RESERVE BEST DOG.

Another one with a superb grizzle and tan coat. A real tweedy job. Nice outline and narrow. Easily spanned. He was in good fettle and well muscled, showing a second thigh. He was good for bone, had nice small feet with thick pads and he moved well with good drive from his rear.

1st - CH Otterbobs Riggindale JW (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Four-year-old grizzle and tan dog. Lovely masculine border head with broad skull. Strong muzzle and good teeth with scissor bite. Correct front angulation with well laid back shoulder blade. From the front he is narrow and he has straight legs with enough bone. He was prepared and trimmed up to perfection with a tight pin wire coat just coming in nicely. Just the right amount of hair left on his tail, legs and feet to make everything fit together entirely. He has a flat top line and his tail is set high, coming straight of the end of his back and he carries it just right. He was fit and well toned and he had a good bend of stifle. With such construction, it was no surprise to see him move effortlessly, with exuberance and drive. He was so eye-catching here today. He carries his ribs well back. He has a deep enough chest and was spannable with strong loin and I found two good handfuls of thick pelt. BEST DOG AND BEST IN SHOW.

I actually thought I might have already gone over my winner of this class until I came to this little bitch. This 17-month-old grizzle has a lovely feminine head, well-placed ears and a super keen expression from her dark eyes. She was well presented and has an excellent front assembly. She has a perfect bite and was easily spanned. Good topline and tailset. New coat coming in nicely. She moved really well and with zest. Only beaten in the final line up by the coat of the best bitch. She is one I will watch out for. RESERVE BEST BITCH AND BEST JUNIOR.

Enough reach to her neck leading to a narrow front. Good for bone and she has small feet with thick hard pads. Easily spanned. Both when standing and on the go, she keeps a good outline and carries her tail to advantage. I cannot fault this bitch’s movement. Another very good example.
