I was honoured to be invited to judge our Club’s Championship Show, 30 years after I last judged here (at a different venue) in 1996. This is my 16th time awarding CCs in the UK. Thank you to the Committee for this invitation. Thank you also to my two excellent ring stewards Janice Johnson and Marina Fleming and to the Collecting Ring Stewards Judy Carr and Judith Fawcett, all four of whose efforts throughout the day kept everything running smoothly so we finished in good time. Many thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs to show to me and for the friendly atmosphere I encountered throughout the day. Win or lose, you always take the best dog home, as they say.
I found the quality excellent throughout, with many classes where I was really spoilt for choice. All males were entire and most of the entry had good scissor bites, with only one or two in Veteran being not so “precise”, shall we say. Some of the dogs were a little difficult to span and so paid the price, but on a whole, most were spannable and had good rib shapes. The standard does not ask for a flat rib – I do love to see a good rib shape when viewed from above, with enough capacity for heart and lungs to do their jobs. It is important to the breed’s job of work that they are spannable and have ribs carried well back. Movement is also important as it plays a major part in making them fit for function. An otter-like head takes them apart from a generic terrier and makes them the breed we love to own.
When the line ups came into the ring, particularly my bitch line up, I was very pleased to see them all and happy that we have such good examples of the breed.

1st - Cedarhill Dish Of The Day For Dexlin (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness)
Lovely varminty expression on this 8 year old boy, who was in lean, hard condition with a good length of body and moving well both ways. Face furnishings a little sparse today. Lovely topline, which he kept on the move. Excellent rib – he came to hand very easily. Good set on of tail. Small, neat paws with thick pads.
2nd - Mysulan Going Solo JW VW (Mrs S J Baxter)
I have loved this blue and tan boy before very much. He has an excellent thick coat and pelt. Today he was just a little heavier than the winner but he has a super straight front and the best of otter-like heads. Good topline and tailset and good, thick carrot like tail and good bend of stifle.

1st - Beaconpike Polus (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
Loved this puppy as soon as he walked into the ring. Lovely size for his age, being just 6 months and one day. Excellent mouth with big teeth and strong jaw. Dark eyes. Well put together with a good length to his neck and lovely shaped rib. Not overdone in any way. Loose pelt. Tail right off the top of his level back and a good bend of stifle.
2nd - Sandyfaulds Finn Mccool (Mr G Grassie)
Loved this puppy; he was a bit short of coat today but he stood over the ground well, with a good length to his body and had a good layback of rib. Good head, with dark eye and ears dropping forward close to the cheek.
3rd - Beaconpike Pontus By Carrock (Ms J M Fawcett)

Love this boy’s head and expression – he has a lovely dark eye and nice reach of neck. Good, thick jacket and pelt. Good tail, well set on. A little erratic in front movement today, which could improve perhaps if walked a little slower. Very happy showdog.

1st - Dassett Oberon JW (Mrs S Spafford)
A difficult decision between the first two placed in this class. Loved both of them. The first one is more put together while the second is a little more gangly. Lovely otterlike head on the first, with a nice dark eye and good teeth. Excellent topline and tailset. Thick pelt.
2nd - Tarkaswell Hollywood Rock (Mrs S J & Mr C P Girling)
A little more rangy than the first and a bit narrower in foreface but a lovely expression. Good straight front. Bodywise, he has a little more “tuck up” than the first.

1st - Whittonglebe Spylaw Scout (Mr G & Mrs J Mackenzie)
Was 3rd in a strong JD class. Very keen, varminty expression on otter-like head, though would prefer a little more strength in his foreface. This boy was easily spanned. Moved very well both ways today, on small catlike feet with thick pads. Excellent rib and overall make and shape.
2nd - Barrowmouth Border Boy (Mr S Chambers)
Preferred the head on the first, but he has nice ear placement. Good dark eye. Moved very well on a loose lead. Good shaped rib. Thick, carroty tail. Good bend of stifle.

Lovely size and moved very well for his young handler, covering the ground well on neat paws. One of the best otter-like heads with dark eye. Thick pelt with excellent, plentiful jacket. Good straight front.
2nd - Staynorwood Nightcap (Mr G & Mrs C Richardson)
Liked this one very much. Good head with dark eye. Good size and similar type to the first. Not overdone in any way. Moderate throughout, as befits our standard. Lovely straight, narrow front. Excellent tailset and good bend of stifle.

Another one of good size and moderation throughout. Moved beautifully coming and going. Nice level topline with good set-on of tail. Love his otter-like head, with ears carried forward, close to the cheek. Narrow front.
2nd - Ravenside Run To Me At Sandyfaulds (Mr G Grassie)
Moved very well. Possesses a good length of neck leading into good shoulders. Excellent, loose pelt and good jacket. I just preferred the strength of muzzle on the first, but he has a good dark eye.

Res - Goxfell Gotcha (Mrs J Stamp & Mr D Joyce)
VHC - Elemcella Bar Tender (Mr C Tait)

1st - Billy Boy Mayhem (Mr C Foreman & Miss L Keenan)
Fell in love with this lovely, rich red dog the second I saw him in the ring. What an otter head, with lovely dark eyes. In very thick coat which from ringside might appear to make him look bigger than he is, but he is so easily spannable with excellent layback of rib. Moved like a dream. To be ultra critical, would prefer a little less bone on legs, but that could not detract from his other qualities. Lovely thick tail, well set on. Beautifully prepared and presented. Delighted to award him the DCC. Later learned he has now got 2 CCs and 2 RDCCs – wish him all the best for the future.
2nd - CH Cobstoneway Stand By Me JW (Mrs G Stevens)
Loved this boy, who is not overdone in any way. Good for size and bone and moved really well. Good head with good ear placement. Would prefer a darker eye, but his movement and moderation took him to this placement today. Pleased to award him the RDCC.

Lovely class of veterans with quality throughout.
1st - Achnagairn Touch Of Class (Mrs A Fraser)
This 10 year old bitch was quality and type throughout. Moved so very well – could put the young ones to shame with her steady movement for her age and good topline and tailset. Fantastic thick pelt and harsh jacket. Very pretty head. Beautiful dark eyes, of good shape and size. Lovely straight front. Pleased to award her BVIS.
2nd - Borderxpress Echo Beach (Mr R Wright)
Really like this girl as well. She has a good reach of neck and good length to her body. Lovely dark eyes and good straight front. Small, cat-like feet and good set on of tail.

Lovely blue and tan baby just one day shy of 7 months old, with good shaped rib, she spanned very easily. Just right for bone. Feminine otterhead with lovely dark eye. Pleased to award her BPIS.
2nd - Thornheswin Heart Of Fire (Mr J C Dixon)
Lots to like about this one and she has time to come into herself. Lacking a little of coat today but this did not detract from her qualities. A little longer in foreface than the winner and would prefer more fill under the eye. Good in bone, not overdone in any way and moved very nicely for a baby.
3rd - Ardenholm Belle (Mrs C Swain)
Res - Sandyfaulds Morning Star For Beaconpike (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
VHC - Riseburn Rapport (Miss C Tutin)

1st - Holteal Sixpenny Worth (Mrs G Vaughan)
Close decision between the first two, but the front movement was better on the first. Very nice make and shape on this one, with a lovely otter head, with dark eye and ears dropping forward close to the cheek, good reach of neck and straight front. Spanned easily with loose pelt. Well off for bone, without being overdone. Good tight cat-like feet.
2nd - Glebeheath Marigold (Mrs J Guvercin)
Loved the type on this girl. Fantastic jacket. If her front movement had only been better today, she would have been an easy winner, but it was not to be. Still very much a baby, so has time to settle down in movement. Pretty bitch with lovely dark eye. Well off for bone without being overdone. Good topline and tailset and coat and pelt of the best.
3rd - Thistlemead Cascabel (Mrs P M Heeley)

Another one who took my eye as soon as she came in the ring. Everything in the right place, she possesses a fantastic thick pelt and jacket. Lovely otter head with dark eyes. Straight, narrow front. Excellent topline and tailset. Just oozes quality and was in strong contention for top honours.
2nd - Fehmarn Celtic Cybi (Mrs J Morton Shaw)
Lighter framed bitch of quality. Lovely otter head. Good reach of neck. Moved very well. Good topline which she kept on the move. Good thick carrot tail. Would prefer a little more bend of stifle.

Blue and tan bitch out of the top drawer. Just right for size. A very happy showgirl, being very attentive to her handler. Excellent jacket with correct ticking. Lovely thick tail, well set on. Moved perfectly on small, well padded feet throughout the whole class. Another one who could easily have taken top awards today. Just not enough CCs to go around!
2nd - Mysulan Byards Lass JW (Mrs S J Baxter)
Another beautiful bitch of good size. Such a pretty head, but sadly not much coat today. Lovely otter head with good dark eye and well placed ears. She moved really well both ways.

1st - Ardenholm Belle (Mrs C Swain)
Blue and tan bitch puppy, who was 3rd in a strong Minor Puppy Bitch class. Really pretty blue and tan with otter-like head, although would prefer more fill under the eye. Possesses an excellent jacket. Occasionally holds her tail at a peculiar angle. Moved well on small, cat-like feet. Good topline and good bend of stifle.
2nd - Chorbeck Queen Of Jazz With Foxwater (Mrs J Spence)
Longer, rangier bitch who was VHC in Junior Bitch. Good thick pelt and jacket. Nice set on of tail. Well off for bone but not overdone. Good otter-like head.

1st - Howthwaite Merrily To Smalesmouth (Mrs J Roberts)
My notes say “Type, type, type!!” – for which she is exemplary! Beautiful otter head with the darkest of eyes and lovely dark ears with excellent placement. Lovely thick, loose pelt. Harsh jacket on a lovely body shape – easy to span and ribs carried well back. She moved very well on small, tight feet. Notes ended with “She’s special”. No surprise that she was a very close contender for top honours. Regrettable that only one CC and RCC to award.
2nd - Achnagairn Hot Property (Mrs A Fraser)
Rangier bitch not carrying so much coat, but she too had a lovely otter head and a good straight front. Excellent topline. Ribs carried well back.
3rd - Keebank Platinum Queen (Mrs L Keeffe)
Res - Tyneotter Summer Solstice (Mrs N Anderson)
VHC - Chorbeck Blue Velvet (Mrs H Haughton)

Beautiful otter head. Loved her outline and she moved exceedingly well. Excellent body shape with good layback of rib. Very attentive to her handler. Good bone structure without being overdone. Moderation throughout, as per our standard. Excellent coat and pelt. Good, thick carrot tail, well set on and good bend of stifle.
2nd - Borderrush Clementine For Ardenholm (Mrs C Swain)
Another bitch with a lovely otter head, good dark eye and good ear placement. Appears longer in the body as lacking in coat today, but well balanced.
3rd - Glenbucket Oor Wee Dotty (Mrs M J Alexander)
Res - Valicetarn Vivanetta Blue (Mrs V Mason)
VHC - Carrock Complicated JW (Ms J Fawcett)
Entries: 11 Absentees: 4
Very difficult decision in this class between first and second as both are excellent examples of the breed.
1st - CH Haystoun Cosmic Dancer At Paleside (Mr D & Mrs D Mitchell)
When this bitch was on the table, in my head I said “Wow”. Beautiful otter head. I found it hard to describe how much I loved her. Immaculate body shape, with excellent shaped ribs carried well back. Good length of neck. Excellent topline. Tail straight off the top of her back. Moved fore and aft perfectly. So very pleased to award her BCC and Best in Show against a lovely dog and Best Blue and Tan.
2nd - Mysulan Rhapsody In Blue (Mrs S J Baxter)
Beautiful otter head. Lovely make and shape to this girl, with a good blue and tan jacket. Excellent body shape with good layback of rib. Tail of good length and shape, Moved round the ring with confidence, especially in the challenge for Reserve Bitch CC and Reserve BIS, the latter winning, in addition to her other qualities, because of her excellent bone, not being overdone in any way.

Res - Valicetarn Vivanetta Blue (Mrs V Mason)
VHC - Irton Marmalade (Mr D G & Mrs A C Fryer)

All three braces were well matched.
1. Particularly liked this well matched pair of dogs, both in type and size. They moved round the ring happily together (Mr S Chambers)
2. Well matched for type (dog and bitch), in lovely condition. (Mr P Appleby)
3. (Mrs A Johnson)
