My thanks to the Officers & Committee for inviting me to judge their show , & for the excellent ring stewards Mr Brewster & Mrs Armstrong who made the day run smoothly & kept me going with refreshments ! I enjoyed being with fellow BT fanciers & their dogs , as I always do .
I had a very good entry come forward & after such a long time away from the ring , a few were ring rusty & some youngsters were a little overawed , which I considered quite acceptable given so many had missed out on their early education & socialisation & tried to give them opportunity to shine , though a few very nice dogs could have been higher placed but the occasion was too much for them .
I found very good examples , but also had some whose construction fell a little short of the standard …….deep unspannable bodies or brisket below elbow standing or on the move on much shorter than their depth legs , forward placed & too little angulation in their fronts due to upright shoulders & short steep upper arms which shorten their strides or make them goosestep , & flat croups with extra high set tails carried like hound sterns ,or conversely short steep croups with low tailsets , often thin & long tails too & some poor downhill or lumpy/hinged toplines became apparent in profile movement , however the most common thing that struck me was how many have too little bone in pasterns & east-west feet when our standard calls for straight legs & good tight feet . As I lift every dog to see how their fronts ‘’drop’’ into place I found lack of bone through pasterns into feet was a common fault today & so some had feet not facing forward naturally . Most came in good condition , but a few were too thin & their pelvic bones were sticking up & they felt shelly with no depth of loin so their rears lacked muscle accordingly , conversely a handful had indulged during lockdown a little too much ! Coats were as ever , mixed , but the top winners all came in very good order with double coats .

1st - Awbrooksky Never Back Down (Mr R & Miss L Goddard)
grizzle & tan of just 6 months , good bite , neat well placed ears , dark eye & nice expression . A confident puppy who is very well balanced with lovely bodylines , narrow front & easy span rib , firm backline with good underline & nicely set & carried tail , long ground covering stride, in good harsh double coat with loose pelt , he just needs time to grow on & mature , very promising .
2nd - Alcumlow Aramis (Mr P, Mrs B & Miss R Barber)
blue/tan of 8.5m , tall , narrow & a bit angular at the moment , & not quite as well balanced as 1 today , moved actively covering the ground , needs time to fill his frame .

1st - Otterholme Ulysses (Ms T Jones)
Light grizzle of 10m, leggy & narrow , nicely balanced head starting to develop & good bite , clean neck well set into good shoulders & return of upper arm , good firm topline & good underline with easy span well shaped rib , nicely angulated rear & low set hocks . Good double coat & thick pliant pelt , Moved with accuracy on a long ground covering stride ,keeping same outline as when standing , would prefer a shorter thicker tail , but it is well set . BPIS .
2nd - Glenorchy Rooney (Mrs M Davies)
Blue/tan . Typey masculine dog , very overawed , but handles extremely well on the table with many virtues . Lovely masculine otter head with powerful correct length muzzle & jaw which allows space for good big teeth , with well set ears & good eye & not too much stop . Very good narrow front having clean well placed narrow shoulders , & straight well boned legs & good feet . Good rib shape & span , & well muscled shapely hindquarters , in OK coat that is just starting to silver, with loose pelt . Only got a few strides out of him , but what I saw was sound & true. He just couldn’t cope with the occasion today , hope he improves as he gets used to being out & about .

1st - Mansergh History of Art (Miss D Wills)
17m grizzle/tan . Leggy , light framed , very narrow & ‘’wiry build ‘’ , this dog moved around the ring on a lovely long & light free stride keeping his excellent topline , what the old stalwarts called ‘’travel’’ & boy he did ! He has much potential , & I could easily picture him following hounds & getting in anywhere underground . Handles very well on the table , nicely balanced head , slightly light in eye ( wouldn’t affect him working !)with good bite , straight legs , narrow well angulated front , clean shoulders , easy span rib of good shape ,with a medium length of loin & firm long muscled rear with well let down hocks . Carries his tail correctly which is set straight off his back .Came in double coat & showed himself off very well . His free , ground covering & true movement won him RDCC , shall watch him mature with interest .
2nd - Beaconpike Dionysus (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
very nice typy dog of handy size . Good head & eye , pleasing narrow construction throughout & well balanced fore to aft , so kept a good firm topline on the move , easily spanned with deep double coat & lovely pelt . Moved very well , just not quite as long & free striding as my winner today , but another I shall watch with interest . Beat a nice 9m puppy who looked immature in this class .

1st - Hartswelin Veritas With Oatberry (Mrs K Tuffin)
Showy grizzle & tan of medium size put down in very good order . Very typey head with good eye & expression & neat ears , good neck , his straight front could be a little narrower , spannable rib & well balanced rear . Moves accurately but would prefer a longer freer stride , just lost his topline a little in the challenge .
2nd - Skyeisla Blue Reflection (Mr D Haugh)
Another handy sized dog , nice headed blue of good colour with good coat , typical in outline & type , he could be more accurate in front coming on , but moved well behind & in profile .

Narrow front , with straight medium boned legs into good feet , clean narrow shoulders , easy span rib of good length ,hence his good underline & has well muscled rear with well defined second thighs . Evidence of double coat & good pelt . Nice length & shape tail . Moved very true .
2nd - Dymanti Mr Punch (Mrs L J Thornburn)
Bigger stamp , not as narrow in build nor as easy to span as winner today , balanced outline , in good coat & with pelt , moved on a long free stride .

1st - Thistlestone Glenfiddich (Mr S Whisker & Miss J May)
Lovely fully mature grizzle of 3 years , Super head eye & expression , with strong muzzle , good jaw & big teeth , & a super big nose leather ( getting rare now ) Good neck into clean well placed shoulders & narrow front with straight medium boned legs into tight feet . very nice body shape , having well carried back good shape ribs & strong loin , with good underline , spans well . Has medium angulation racy & well muscled hindquarters , with nice carroty tail which is set well . Came in tight harsh double coat & moved with total balance around the ring with equal reach & drive & good travel keeping his outline , moved straight & firmly out & back . Not a flashy dog , but true border type ,being workmanlike & totally sound , he pulled out all the stops today& showed himself off very well . Well deserved DCC , & RBIS , good luck for the future .
2nd - Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
just 2 & still maturing light grizzle who is a stylish showman . Well proportioned head with dark eye , clean flat skull ,& well set ears , though not quite the large nose leather of my winner . Good bite .Clean neck , straight narrow front , good length spannable rib , & angulated rear , came short of coat today which made him look a little less ‘’finished’’ & a little long cast . Moved very true but slightly less balanced fore to aft in profile .Would prefer a shorter more carroty tail . Considered for RDCC but just outmoved in final run off today.

typey red grizzle , balanced outline , deceptive as looked heavy but handled OK , though was deeper & less easy to span than my principle winners , masculine head with good eye & expression , slightly heavy in ear , straight front with good bone int his feet , with good length of shoulder , strong driving rear , deep double coat & good pelt , moved very soundly on a long stride in this class but kept pacing in the challenge
2nd - Oxcroft Jethro (Mr J Price)
light grizzle , very typey , ottery head , flat skull , kind dark eye & neat ears straight narrow front with clean well laid narrow shoulders , spannable ribs with strong loin , medium angulation at rear with well let down hocks . Very good underline , In deep double coat. Just a shade heavy in condition today . When he sets off he moves on a long free stride , but he was a little stop-start rather than flowing around the ring .

9 years young light grizzle of lovely size , type & outline , Good otter head with well placed dark eyes & lovely expression . very good narrow & well angulated front assembly with excellent legs & feet . Good length of rib & strong loin with well made hindquarters ,so he moved very well as he has a long effortless stride & is very accurate , especially good coming on . He was maybe a tad overweight but he spans &has a deep undercoat with thick pelt .
2nd - Breckgreen Soldier Blue (Mrs. J. Green)
8 years blue & tan favourite of mine , light framed narrow , well proportioned & of handy size , he is wearing his years well , just as a good working Border should . Easy span & fit to do a job , accurate out & back , he is just not quite as long striding now as the winner .

2nd - Eatontern Divine Rapture (Mr A Heath)
7m nice headed grizzle who is also narrow , but taller with weaker pasterns & less balanced at present ,as not quite as good in croup as the winner .Good coat & moved soundly . Time is on her side as maturity can change things immensely .

2nd - Otterholme Underground (Ms T Jones)
handy size grizzle sister to BP , very feminine & light framed though slightly fine in bone at present . Narrow all through & well angulated both ends , with good shape rib so spans easily & moves freely & accurately , felt she could carry a tad more weight .In good coat with a pliant pelt .

Very typey red of 14m of correct size . Good otter head & dark eye with lovely expression & correct bite . Narrow front , clean shoulders &spannable rib & strong rear with nice tail to finish the picture in outline . She moved out taking a rhythmic long stride very accurately . Picks up balanced & not too heavy . Coat past its best but better to have slightly too much than none for me .
2nd - Beaconpike Solstice (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
another red I liked very much to go over , less mature as yet than winner ( not a fault !!) lovely feminine head & within standard for size as very light framed so very easy to span . Narrow & well made all through , she simply didn’t want to co-operate today & hoovered relentlessly , but the few strides I saw were accurate & free .

1st - Howthwaite's Resolution (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)
Correct size grizzle of 20m . Feminine head , with good muzzle , correct bite & flat skull with well set ears , lighter eye detracts a little from expression but wouldn’t affect her working as shape & placement are fine . Narrow front with clean well placed shoulders , light framed body so is easy to span with good loin & correct underline , racy rear with well let down hocks . Moves very accurately but would prefer a shade more length of stride in profile . Keeps a good topline going round & was in good depth of double coat with pliant pelt .
2nd - Ravenside Sabor A Mi (Mr M Lowry)
Typey blue & tan also of good size , balanced in outline . Good head & eyes & ears , clean neck & shoulders & good rib length , strong loin , very good well angulated rear with low set driving hocks , carrying a shade more weight than she needs today &short of coat . Moved soundly , but less enthusiastically than 1st.

1st - Sweet Olives Girl (Mrs L J Thornburn)
(3rd in junior) Nice type with well balanced outline under a deep coat . Feminine head with nice expression & well set ears . Clean front & good in rib & loin , moved rather erratically in her previous class , but showed herself off better in this class & went much straighter & more smoothly keeping her typical outline on the move .
2nd - Chesterton Notre Dame With Plushcourt (Mr A J & Mrs W Mooney)
Liked her on the table for size & feminine head with kind eye . Very narrow build with light frame that is easily spanned , but would prefer more depth of loin . Came in good double coat & moved accurately & freely , but was rather unhappy & her tail was down on the move all the time . .Beat a lovely fronted blue b who was very lean today & looked very ‘’up in the air’’ .

Very typy 2 year old grizzle , who is very well balanced & very sound & has substance without coarseness . Liked her head with its moderately broad flat long skull , medium length strong muzzle housing good teeth , dark eyes & well set ears . Good legs & feet with straight bone , well set & angulated front , clean shoulders & well ribbed up fairly long body , excels in length of croup giving a broad thigh in profile & good second thigh with well let down hocks so she moves forward with drive with a long ground covering rhythmic stride . Has a good depth of undercoat & topcoat is good texture with a decent pelt . Nice tail set & carriage .Liked her a lot . Considered for higher honours , just picked up a bit heavier than my winners today .
2nd - Rhozzum Whim (Mrs M Sharp)
Workmanlike narrow b who also has a good otter head & kind dark eye , narrow front & easy span rib . Good for size & picks up balanced . Not as positive in hind movement as 1st today .Came in deep double red coat past its best but of good texture .

Another very workmanlike grizzle who is very narrow & wiry in build , similar stamp to winner ,but slightly bigger to span than 1 . Stylish quality 20m grizzle with clean balanced outline both standing & on the move .Feminine head , dark eye , good bite . Good reach of neck with narrow front & clean well laid shoulders , narrow body with good length of rib that is easily spanned , firm in backline with good underline , picks up light , and has well angulated rear with correctly set & carried tail .. Moved very well with accuracy , freedom & long stride , in double coat well presented . Think her best is yet to come as not the finish in head or body yet as Duchess , being younger & a late maturing type . Close decision , RBCC .
2nd - Carrock Curiosity JW (Ms J Fawcett)
similar in size , make and shape , just not quite as laid back in shoulder as winner , one I have always admired from ringside for her feminine head & lithe build , same comments apply about her workmanlike narrowness & she has quality with type , moved well , but not in as good coat today as the winner

1st - Otterbobs Duchess (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Lovely type fully mature smaller bitch ( Not a fault as she is nearer standard for weight ) of 4 years , who came today in excellent deep double coat & has a super thick loose pelt . Liked her feminine ottery head that is not too deep in stop & clean flat skull , has kind well placed dark eyes , neat ears & good bite . Good reach of neck into well laid narrow shoulders , straight medium boned forelegs & tight feet , easy span narrow rib that appears deeper due to thickness of coat & big thick pelt but she handles far better , & picks up light & balanced , well ribbed up into strong loin & well made rear with very well let down hocks which she used effectively in profile & going away with firm strides , hocks above her feet with no trace of turning in or out .Correctly set & carried short carrot tail with good thick root . The further she moved the better she went & really engaged her hocks & drove forward covering ground effortlessly & coming on straight & true whilst on a loose lead keeping a good outline . Her lovely border type , handy size & soundness won her BCC ( her 2nd I was told ) & BIS , good luck for her title .
2nd - CH Ravenside Marsha At Jordith JW (Mrs L.M.I & Mr A.M. Jordan-Smith)
Pale Grizzle of nice size , who came in good fettle . Feminine head with dark eye , & neat ears , a little deeper in stop , good neck & clean well laid shoulders , medium boned legs & nice feet , could be a shade better in length of rib though spans well , medium length loin , well set tail , straighter at rear through the hock than 1st . Moved freely & accurately , but not quite driving as well from the rear today . Coat & pelt are good .

Fabulous quality & beautifully shapely , leggy & light framed 12 year old dark grizzle , who defies her years , she has a superb outline even now . Lovely refined otter head with super dark eye & expression , Clean reach of neck into long narrow well placed shoulders , good return of upper arm & medium boned straight legs . Has retained her lovely light framed bodylines ,so rib is easy to span & has a well angulated rear , finished with a good thick rooted carrot tail . Her virtues are many but today she stood out in the whole entry for coat , both texture & density & her super pelt , which is loose , plaint & very thick . Moved with a good stride very actively & thoroughly enjoyed her day , a credit to her owners & breeders & a pleasure to judge her at last ! BVIS .
