My thanks to the exhibitors for their entry, always an honour to be allowed to go over their dogs, I did thoroughly enjoy my day. My thanks also to my stewards who helped to keep things on the move throughout.
It was in many ways an interesting entry, the standard asks for a dog that is essentially a working terrier and I wonder how many breeders keep this in mind when planning their litters? This implies a dog of correct size, capable of going all day and with strength but not coarseness. Whilst there were many good dogs present that could answer these requirements, there were many that could not.
The quality was very much in the upper classes of both sexes with a few notable exceptions. The major problem is movement, particularly in front, and the puppies were disappointing in this respect. Many otherwise excellent dogs simply could not cover their ground with any ease; it was an excellent ring with good mats so no excuses there.
In general coats and pelts were good, some could have been tidied to effect, feet and nails were poorly presented and fitness varied, which I always find very disappointing in a breed that does so love to run! I was surprised to find a number of mouths that at best could be described as “iffy”, whilst these would not necessarily effect the dogs ability to work it is a worrying trend. I did, however, have some lovely dogs to go over and I was very pleased with my winners, not enough cards to go round in many classes.

Biggish pup, OK in head, good strong jaw, OK for bone, neat feet, strong loin with a nice tail. A bit short of coat but moving reasonably well when he settled.
2nd - Remony Midnight Rambler (Mrs A E Gregory)
Nicely put together pup but fails very much in head lacking strength in his jaw. Moving with drive but very untidy at the front, good coat & pelt and showing well.

A big class of puppies headed by a promising trio, I liked my placed dogs but movement was a big problem today for the others.
1st - Ravenside Starman (Mr M Lowry)
Good head, good ears and eye giving a very pleasing expression, OK for bone, good shoulder and very well made quarters with a good tail & tail set, OK for coat, a bit enthusiastic on the move but when he settled had good drive & accuracy. In the puppy challenge he settled well and his overall type and movement gave him BPIS.
2nd - Hawcoat Mr Fixit (Mrs E J & Miss R C Larner)
Another good puppy with a lot to like and plenty of promise. Not as strong in head as 1 but OK, good eye & expression, good for bone with nice tight feet, well balanced with good tail & set, shown in good bl/t coat with a good pelt. Moved out well to complete the picture.
3rd - Mysulan Going Solo (Mrs S J Baxter)
Another very promising puppy. OK in head if not as strong over the foreface as the first two, good bone and feet, good shoulder and rib. Harsh bl/t coat but not ticked through yet, good pelt. Moved out OK if a little untidy in front,

1st - Glenbucket Highland Lad (Mrs N Anderson)
Lovely head & expression, good ears and eye. Quite big but easily spanned, well off for bone, lovely balance, excellent shoulder and quarters. He was shown in a strong red coat, which could have been tidied! Moved off round the ring with great style. He looked very well when he stood himself naturally, a lot to like about this one who certainly caught my eye in the challenge.
2nd - Karison Kosta (Miss K Johnson)
Another good one, strong head, nice eye, strong muzzle with well set ears. Again a biggish dog but spannable. I preferred the overall make of 1 but he was OK with a strong back end and good tail & tail set. A little short of coat today. He was giving his handler a hard time on the move but did enough to secure his place in this strong class and has promise for the future.
3rd - Ridgebow Tracker (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
Very good head and expression, well-set ears, reasonably made all through with plenty of bone and shown in a good coat, he looked well. Rather choppy on the move today which cost him in this class.
Res - Stineval Basil Of Cromlechs (Miss K Hamilton)

1st - Stowthorney Mr Tickle JW (Mr R Brewster & Ms J Green)
Biggish dog, nice head, good eye & expression, OK for shoulder with a good rib, OK for feet. Shown in a good coat, he moved out reasonably well.
2nd - Carrock Carnegie (Ms J Fawcett)
OK in head but could be stronger in foreface, reasonable balance with a strong back end, feet OK, good tail & set he presents a good typical picture. Totally out of coat today but has a decent pelt, moved out OK but again a bit untidy in front.
3rd - Markington Apollo (Mrs M Houseman)
Excellent head and expression with a strong jaw, OK for make and bone. Shown in very good coat today with a nice tail & set. He is a bit short in rib so accurate but not quite the drive on the move of the first two.
Entries: 4 Absentees: 1
1st - Cymro Jack of Rhozzum (Mrs M Sharp)
Unplaced in the big puppy class, his head is OK but his jaw could be stronger. Well angulated and quite a good make of a dog. Shown in a good coat that could have been tidied better, He moved out very well covering his ground with ease to give him this class.
2nd - Markington Apollo (Mrs M Houseman)

Two very good dogs headed this class.
1st - Cedarhill Once Upon a Time (Mrs C Dean)
I liked him a lot; he has superb balance & proportion – a good template for a Border. Good head, lovely ear & set, correct eye with a strong jaw giving a great expression. Very good shoulder and quarters, he has neat feet and the very best of tails and set on. Shown today in an excellent bl/t coat and he was really moving out well. Another who caught my eye in a very strong challenge, I am sure that his day will come.
2nd - Oxcroft Freelander (Miss J Price)
Totally different type but all Border. Lovely head with a good strong jaw, good ear set. Good bone with good rib carried into a strong loin, good feet, he has good quarters and gets over his ground well but could have helped his handler more by not messing about on the move! Shown in a good bl/t coat, overall an impressive dog.
3rd - Keebank Charlie's Diamond (Mrs L Keeffe)
Good head and expression, a nice type of dog, shown in a very good coat. OK on the move but again untidy in front.
Res - Flutorum Artful Dodger (Mr E Castel)
VHC - Dymanti Roman Warrior at Nottorg ShCM (Mr P J & Mrs A K Taylor)

1st - Ridgebow Rifleman JW (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
Good all round dog with a lot to like, good head and expression, strong jaw, good shoulder and front, good bone. Well balanced, shown in good coat, showing very well and moving out well covering his ground.
2nd - Otterwood Caius JW ShCM (Mr M J & Mrs J M Hollingsbee)
Good head & ear, good expression. OK for bone, he is well constructed with good angulations both ends, shown in an excellent harsh bl/t coat. He was not helping his handler on the move but did enough to secure his place here. Lots to like about him but he doesn’t put much in to his showing which is a shame.
3rd - Breckgreen Soldier Blue (Mrs. J. Green)
Not as strong in head but still OK. Reasonably well constructed. Another shown in a very good bl/t coat which could have been tidier. He moved out OK.
Res - Fieldsearch Phantom (Mr D Pearson)
Entries: 12 Absentees: 1
The breed Standard does allow for quite a difference in interpretation and they were all here! An excellent class that was difficult to sort such was the variation in type. Quality went all the way down the line.
1st - Howthwaite Grainsgill (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)
Lovely head, good strong jaw, nice eye. Excellent front with good rib carried well back into a strong loin, good rear angulation, and is OK for bone. A big dog but spannnable and he was shown in excellent coat. He is of a lovely type and was easily the best mover in this good class, altogether doing enough to take the Reserve CC.
2nd - Stineval Napoleon JW (Mr & Mrs A G Horner)
Smaller dog, head is OK with a strong jaw, maybe a bit heavy in ear. Good shoulder and balance, good angulations, he is a neatly made dog shown in good coat with lovely tight feet. Overall he presents a very pleasing picture. He moved out well but just not quite with the drive of 1, difficult decision here.
3rd - Remony Merry Gentleman (Mrs. H Allison)
Good head with a nice wicked eye but not as strong over the foreface as the first two. Good neck and shoulder, lovely front, excellent rib and loin. Shown in a good red coat, he moved out well to complete a very pleasing trio.
Res - Gameway Mcvitie JW (Mrs P Clark)
VHC - Oxcroft Ritchie (Mr J Price)

Another very good class with a mixture of types, making for some very difficult decisions.
1st - Tojamatt Warlord (Mr & Mrs D Matthews)
Good head, strong jaw. Nice rangy dog with a good front, best of shoulders, good rib with racy quarters. Shown in good coat, nice tail & tail set, he is overall of a very nice type with great balance. When he settled on the move he covered his ground well and standing looked the part, delighted to award him the CC.
2nd - CH Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW (Mr C Hall & Miss L Ellis)
There is a lot to like about this dog, lovely head but I preferred the eye of 1, good neck and shoulder, good bone, good feet, good tail, nice balance. In good coat today, he shows himself off very well and was moving out well just not the ground-covering stride of 1 and sometimes a little choppy on the move.
3rd - Wadesleia Mr Herriot (Mrs H A & Mr A Fletcher)
Another pleasing dog, good head and neck but not as good in shoulder as the first two. Well made all through and moved OK although he didn’t always help his handler. He was shown in a very good coat and shows himself well when he settles.

2nd - StBedehounds Frank in Sense of Raleniro ShCM (Mr M J & Mrs D A Lorraine)
Just 8 years, not enjoying his day out. He is OK in head with a strong jaw, reasonably made all through, shown in good bl/tan coat with a good pelt and moved OK.
3rd - Blues Boy At Brackenfell (Mr C Hall & Miss L Ellis)
Nice all round dog even if there is a bit too much of him. Very good head, reasonable balance, shown in a big coat that could have been tidier, moved out OK.

My kind of bitch, I like her head, good strong jaw, good eye, neat ear well set. Good bone, good front, good angulations with nice tight feet. Good tail & tail set. Shown in a lot of coat with a lovely thick pelt, moved well. A very typical little Border, still a baby but with a lot of promise.
2nd - Southash Finding Bliss (Mr J & Mrs I M Southam)
I liked this one a lot, good head, nice eye, good small ears. Well made all through and good for bone if not quite as racy as 1, shown in good coat and moving very well.

Good head if not as strong as the first two, well made, a bl/t rather short of coat today but showing and moving out well, a nice overall picture, another promising prospect.

Very competent all round bitch, lovely head, good strong muzzle, nice ear, good eye. Lovely neck and shoulder, good bone and great balance. Best of feet, shown in a good coat. A very showy well made bitch who gets over her ground well but rather fussy in front movement with cost her in the puppy challenge. BPB.

3rd - Ianteg Red Rubi JW ShCM (Miss S Ritchie)
Smaller bitch and not so well off for bone, attractive head but could be stronger over the muzzle, balance OK and good behind, nice tail & set. Shown in a reasonable coat and was also moving well to complete a nice trio.

Excellent head good strong jaw, slightly heavy in ear, Good bone at the front & really good feet, good coat & condition & thick pelt, nice angulations fore and aft, good tail & tail set, moved out really well, covering her ground with ease. 2nd - Tythrop Turn Back Time (Mrs J L Lee)
Not as strong in head as 1 but OK with a good eye, well balanced throughout with good feet, good tail. Good rib & loin but I would perhaps have preferred her rather stronger behind with a bit more muscle. Shown in an excellent well ticked bl/t coat. A bit flighty on the move but she settled well enough, a pleasing showy little bitch she did enough to take the Res CC.
