I would like to thank the club and committee for the invite to judge their show, this was my first judging appointment for several years so I particularly appreciated of my stewards, Katrina and Liz in keeping the ring running smoothly.
Thank you to all the exhibitors for making the journey and allowing me to go over their dogs. There was a lovely friendly atmosphere around the ringside.
On the day I thought the quality of the bitches surpassed the dogs overall. Movement seems to be an issue, particularly coming but I did find some lovely exhibits who covered the ground effortless.
Fitness and muscle tone was lacking in a few of the exhibits which I was surprised about and did factor into my decision making, they are ‘essentially a working terrier’ after all.
Coats were varied with a number in full coat, some in between and a few with little coats. Bites were good .I found one kinked tail.

1st - Elemcella Calvin Candie (Mr C Tait)
A smart 6month old boy of nice size and well balanced. He was moderately angled front and rear and easily spanned carrying his ribs well back with good bend of stifle. He had a strong muzzle and head for this age and a good bite, he was carrying his ears a little high on occasion.
On the day he was turned out in excellent condition with a harsh double coat and good pelt. He had nice neat, tight feet . He moved with a lovely easy stride just needs to tighten up which should come with time. (Best puppy in Show)
2nd - Sandyfaulds Finn Mccool (Mr G Grassie)
Another 6month old G&T who was taller framed, however he was narrow throughout making him easily spanned, with a good length in neck and level topline.
He had a super harsh, double coat with a lovely thick pelt and nice carrot tail which he held well on the move.
He had a pleasing expression, a slightly longer muzzle than the first with a little more stop but still has lots of time to develop.
He was a little unsettled on the move today and was ‘crabbing’ but there were flashes of a nice length of stride in profile when he got going.

1st - Ravenside All In One Night (Mr S J Richardson)
This 5year old G&T dog was presented in a good harsh double jacket which was at its best today with a good pelt. He would benefit with a touch less condition although he had good muscle tone. A strong masculine Border with a lovely head and expression, good head proportions with little stop and correct ear set. He was nicely off for bone . Level topline , which he held on the move with a strong loin finishing with a thick short tail which was well set on. He covered the ok in profile however was moving a little wide coming and a touch cow hocked behind.
2nd - Otterpaws Take On Me (Miss A M Dixon)
This 10month old, lighter G&T was still very much a puppy who has plenty of time to mature. He was built on finer lines and was a little unsettled on the table in the puppy class and on the move in this class today. He has a lovely head and expression with a nice strong muzzle with neat ears. He was easily spanned today with a nice rib and moderate throughout. He had good tight feet. His coat wasn’t at its best today feeling slightly soft in texture with not much undercoat. He moved quite close coming and going, however I feel he just needs time to develop and mature as he has a lot of nice attributes.

1st - Auchenlaw Ted At Kilburnpride (Mrs J Scott)
This boy appeals greatly for breed type, he had a gorgeous otter head with a keen expression, neat well-placed ears with a dark eye. He had a short strong muzzle, moderately broad skull with a correct bite. Show in full coat which was just past its best today texture wise. I found him a nice size dog who was easily spanned with a good length in body. He was a little upright on his pasterns and slightly short in upper arm, which affected his reach on the move but he was pretty true going and coming . A lovely typey masculine boy.

1st - Hightarn Nightfall At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)
A racy, workman like blue and tan dog who was presented in the harshest of double jackets with a good pelt. He has a masculine head, nice dark eye with a moderately broad skull and well-placed ears. Slightly longer in muzzle but still has plenty of strength in foreface. Correct scissor bite with a strong jaw and big teeth.
He is narrow throughout which made him spannable, with a straight front a nice reach of neck into a level topline which he held well on the move. He moved positively around the ring, particularly from behind using his racy quarters. He was in firm condition today and with his excellent jacket that helped secure him BD and BOS
2nd - Lairehope Wizard (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)
Another blue and tan male who was also presented in a lovely harsh jacket with plenty of undercoat, he has the most fantastic thick pelt. He was smaller in height than the first dog but slightly stronger made and was well off for bone. He stood on tight well-padded feet.
He had a strong head with a short muzzle with a correct bite. Again, another dog in good firm condition who was moderately angled front and rear, with a firm loin and well set tail.
He moved well around the ring driving from his well-muscled rear, however a little wide coming. A lot to like about him however I just struggled to span him which factored into the placings between the 1st and 2nd today.

1st - Roseghyll Timeless Queen (Mrs A Johnson)
A hand sized10month old bitch who was a real little live-wire and outgoing puppy which was nice to see. I found her quite short in muzzle with broad scull, but this may balance out with age and time and her bite was ok. She had dark eyes and neat well-placed ears. She is quite a light framed bitch who was spanned with easy, a good rib with neat feet , she was very short on coat today. Difficult to assess on the move as she was quite exuberant but still lots of time to settle.

1st - Lairehope Emerald (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)
Good sized rich G&T bitch shown in full coat . Nothing overdone about this bitch .She had a Iovely feminine expression and dark keen eye and correct scissor bite. She handled so well once you got under that super double coat which was harsh in texture with plenty of undercoat, she was another from this kennel with a fantastic thick pelt. She is moderate throughout without exaggeration, well angled front and behind with a level topline and well set on short carrot tail. I found her easy to span. She was in good fit condition with a firm 2nd thigh. She was just right for bone and had neat feet.
She really came alive on the move driving from the rear with a good reach in shoulder, she looked fantastic in profile covering the ground effortlessly. My eye just kept coming back to her in the lineup which secured her BB and BIS
2nd - Otterbobs Maude (M Murray)
Another nice bitch, she was a lighter boned G&T who was appealing in head having a strong muzzle and moderately broad skull but not overdone. She was narrow throughout with a well laid back shoulder and firm loin, I spanned her with ease. She was presented in good fit condition. I found she had a good bend of stifle with race hindquarters; she moved ok when settled. Sadly, she had no coat today but still a nice type with lots to like.

The most difficult class of the day to judge as the first 3 bitches were all quite different in type but all had many positive attributes.
1st - Carrock Complicated JW (Ms J Fawcett)
A lovely feminine3 yr old bitch who had a super head and expression, she had a correct bite and good strength in jaw. She was narrow throughout making her easily spanned with a straight front. Shown in excellent double coat with a good pelt, she had tight neat feet and was in lovely condition. Her tail was well set on and she had a level topline which she held nicely on the move. She moved steadily around the ring, better going away than coming. She shows herself very well for her handler.
2nd - Howthwaite Merrily To Smalesmouth (Mrs J Roberts)
Another nice bitch who was a different type to the first but still had many positive attributes. She was stronger made but I found her spannable. She had a strong head, slightly longer in muzzle to the first but still had a good expression and plenty of strength of jaw with a good bite. Moderately angled front and rear and well balanced with a strong loin with a good topline and tail set. She moved with plenty of drive from behind. The closest decision of the day with the coat being the deciding factor as she did not have much on the day.

1st - Irton Firestorm (Mr D & Mrs A Fryer)
2year old red bitch who had a super otter head with a keen expression and as with the junior bitch she had a cracking short carrot tail . She had a strong muzzle and correct bite. She was shown in full coat which made her look heavier than she is but when you get your hands on her you will find a moderately angled, balanced bitch who has a correct shoulder placement which enabled her to move true aft and to. She had a thick pelt and level topline. She had a good bend of stifle which she used on the move. She moved true all ways around the ring which evidenced her correct, balanced construction.
It was a close decision between her and the junior bitch for BIS I just found the junior bitch had that extra sparkle today. RBB &RBIS
2nd - Otterpaws The Thunder Rolls JW (Miss A M Dixon)
G&T bitch who was put down in good order today being in fit condition with an excellent tight double coat . She has a lovely head and expression, good strength in muzzle with little stop, ears held correctly close to the cheek. Good length of neck into a level topline with a correct tailset. I liked her overall length and balance in profile and found her easy to span.
She moved nicely in profile holding her topline well however is better going away than coming

What a super class of veterans which was a pleasure to judge.
1st - Cedarhill Dish Of The Day For Dexlin (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness)
A very smart rising 8year old G&t dog who is not showing his age at all. He has a lovely otter head, being moderately broad in skull with a short strong muzzle. A narrow , racy dog who was easily spanned and carries his ribs well back with a firm loin. He has good topline and tailset with well padded neat feet. Today he was sporting a harsh tight double coat and was turned out to perfection. He moved steadily and held his topline in profile well, found him quite close coming but used his rear well.
He stood out in this veteran class and the overall picture also secured him RBD. BVIS and RBD.
2nd - Otterpaws Lyin Eyes JW (Miss A M Dixon)
A nice typical G&T bitch who had a super head and expression which was strong but not overdone. Her coat was pin wire with a good pelt. I liked her reach in neck, and found she was ribbed well back. I thought she was a little heavy in shoulder so wasn’t as clean on the move coming but in profile and going away she was driving nicely from her well angled, muscled rear.
3rd - Kentixen Mint Imperial At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)
I really liked this workman like gent, with a bit of work on his fitness and presentation he still has a lot to offer.

1st Otterpaws Firebird Vw Shcm / Otterpaws Lyin Eyes JW (Miss A Dixon)
Two typey, evenly matched G&T bitches who were in good coat and condition , they moved around the ring well together.
2nd Hollexby Travellin Man/ Oakyard Objet D’Art@Hollexby (Mr P Appleby)
A taller dog and bitch pairing who were presented in good condition however a little short of coat on the day. They moved nicely together .
