Thanks to Scottish Border Terrier club for inviting me to judge at their 2025 Ch show , hospitality as ever was excellent . My two Stewards kept things running smoothly , so thanks to Judy & Pam too .
I enjoyed my day with some very nice borders and only one or two folk were obviously unhappy , the rest took my decisions sportingly & I thank all for coming .
Overall the good dogs & bitches pleased me a lot , but some were simply not workmanlike enough to easily get to ground and back out again . Feet were very flat and thin in quite a few , one kinked tail , 2 rather poor bites & several lacking any muscle …. Active and game , capable of following horse or hounds , with the lithe build to enable earthwork in tight places is what we need …. I found a few good quality males & slightly more top quality females that could do the job if given opportunity , some however were too big in rib & wide in front and weighed well over standard . So some adjustment in future breeding plans may be necessary I felt , to return to a smaller narrower frame .

1st - Otterpaws Take On Me (Miss A M Dixon)
Good for height 7m pale grizzle , head still developing , has slightly round ears & dark eye , skull could be slightly longer . Front is OK but shoulders & upper arm could be longer I felt , rib is a bit short so underline isn’t as gradual as a longer ribbed up dog , he is spannable . Rear is ok , tailset could be a bit higher , moves around the ring level , goes away straight but still needs to tighten in front for accuracy .

1st - Goldstueckchen's Neo (B Schuler)
Lovely head on this 6 m youngster , good length skull & strong muzzle housing really big teeth . Loved the flat skull with little stop & super eye & expression . Very light narrow frame , super narrow front with clean flat shoulders , straight medium boned legs into excellent feet . Easy span and has very good underline due to well carried back ribs . Well angulated throughout , he was very exhuberant , taking really long free stride in profile , needs to muscle more at rear but he’s still very young yet . Loved his freedom , lift & reach , with confident personality ! Best Puppy Dog
2nd - Whittonglebe Spylaw Scout (Mr G & Mrs J Mackenzie)
Shorter legged , much more mature , but not as masculine in head or outgoing in style .
Shorter skull & very short muzzle that lacked power and had crowded mouth , dark eye , neat ears . Finer boned and had very flat feet today . Presented in good topcoat but lacking undercoat & therefore thinner pelt . Spannable rib , moves ok but much shorter stride & not the drive from hindquarters today .

1st - Earthwise Phantom (Mr E Houston)
Handy size pale grizzle , head is typical though not quite as strong in foreface for a male . Nicely made all through , medium bone , ok feet but could be trimmed better ! Spannable rib , moved with level back line with good stride , moving true both ways . Coat had loads of dead topcoat & masses of undercoat so would benefit from stripping & scraping dead undercoat out . Pelt was good , both thick & pliant .

1st - Comberdown Likely Lad (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
Light framed workmanlike & forward going light grizzle d in excellent fit condition , who moves lightly & accurately on tight deep feet , keeping a level back line with good tailset & carrot tail . Masculine head , good length of skull & strong muzzle & underjaw without being coarse , well placed ears , dark eyes , & implacable expression . Has enough neck with clean shoulders , easy span ribs , harsh topcoat , enough undercoat & good pelt . Shows very well .
2nd - Brumberhill Beswick JW (Mr S A Mcpherson)
Smaller stamp of very nice type , head still developing , good eye & expression , neat well placed ears dark eyes . Liked his neck , shoulders , front , & feet , Good in wither , topline & tailset . A handy sized d who came rather overdone in condition today , picking up heavy , so paid the price .

1st - Beaconpike Adonis (Miss J Strother)
Strong headed dog with dark eyes. Bit upright in front & feet could be trimmed better to enhance him . Up to size in rib , he moved well behind but a bit close in front & shorter stride in profile , coat ok , he has a lovely friendly personality !

1st - I Walk The Line Into Thornheswin (Mr J C Dixon)
Leggy , light framed & fit grizzle dog scores in head , eye , expression , ears , good reach of neck , narrow front & very good legs & feet . Deep double coat with thick skin , has very good underline from well carried back ribs …. Still a little juvenile at rear , time should correct that , very nice workmanlike dog .
2nd - Brumberhill Barnaby (Mr P Armstrong)
Also liked this blue boy for type and movement , good legs & feet , very soundly made especially at rear . Not as easily spanned as winner , could lose a pound or 2 to advantage . Good coat & thick pelt . Nicely set tail .
3rd - Beaconpike Adonis (Miss J Strother)

1st - Kewhaigh Innocent Man JW (Mrs N A Cummins)
Blue d of good proportions in tight harsh coat & very fit , though he doesn’t want anymore muscle for me as it’s shortening his stride I feel . Masculine head with long skull & strong muzzle with excellent underjaw & big teeth . Head very stripped down making him look hard bitten somewhat . Liked his rangy outline & firm back line going round with good tailset & drive from behind .
2nd - Ravenside Play The Game Kersfell JW (Mrs M Sneddon)
Another of workmanlike build & very nice to go over , well proportioned in outline d . Good head , big teeth , reachy neck , & straight narrow front , nicely angulated . Good shape & length of rib , correct tail set & racy rear . Rather giddy moving , spoiling his topline completely going round , but moves true both ways .

1st - Goxfell Gotcha (Mrs J Stamp & Mr D Joyce)
Very nice size grizzle & tan of 3 years . Like his length to height proportions . Super head with flat skull & very good powerful muzzle & underjaw with big teeth . Dark eyes , with keen expression , Narrow front , good shoulder , nicely boned legs into decent feet . Good length of rib & easily spannable . Well turned hindquarters . Double coat & good loose pelt . Very typical all through but would perhaps like a slightly shorter tail . Moved very soundly in all directions to win RDCC today .
2nd - Mysulan Byards Legend JW (Mrs S J Baxter)
Another eye catching dog , slightly shorter in overall balance although taller at wither , he is workmanlike in build with narrow front , excellent legs & feet & spannable ribs . Masculine head with dark eyes & good bite . He moves true but just lost his topline a little going round . Put down in fit condition with good harsh double coat .

1st - CH Brumberhill Bit O’Blarney JW (Mr S A Mcpherson)
Blue and tan of very good type & balance in excellent fettle . Lovely typy head , moderately broad skull of good length , little stop , medium length muzzle , good underjaw & good bite . Optically rather distracting “make up “ can make him seem to have rounder eyes , but it’s just cosmetic , his eyes & expression are typical . Like his narrow front with clean limb straight legs & neat tight feet . Good clean well laid shoulders with height at wither, correct shape ribs well carried back into strong loin . Very good croup with tailset straight off his back & nice short carrot tail . Very well angulated rear , with low set hocks . Came in excellent order double coat and fit condition . Loved him going round on loose lead keeping his “self carriage” outline with excellent height at wither & driving from behind . Lovely quality , but still workmanlike , a pleasure to judge him & award him DCC & BIS .
2nd - CW BIH Ch BIH JCH BIH Happy Fiery Lucifer (B Schuler)
17m Grizzle youngster , excellent body shape , good head with lovely big teeth , nicely placed dark eyes . Front slightly forward placed , good length of rib , well angulated rear , easily spanned , came in good topcoat but a little deeper undercoat would be preferable . Liked him a lot going round , good moving away , slightly too close coming towards

1st - Mysulan Going Solo JW VW (Mrs S J Baxter)
Blue who is fit & active . Nice head & eye & good bite . Front is a little too forward placed so he is very narrow & moves too close in front . Spannable rib carried well back , short loin , well angulated rear, put down in deep double coat with good texture . Moved freely & in lively fashion in profile enough drive behind , just a bit close in front .
2nd - Cedarhill Dish Of The Day For Dexlin (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness)
Grizzle in good condition with pleasing head . Not as well ribbed up nor striding out like winner today .
3rd - Kentixen Mint Imperial At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)

All 3 at very different stages !
1st - Cottown Beech Sandend (Miss J Syversen & Mr M Booth)
Light framed grizzle , nice body shape , easily spanned , moved with longest stride on the class , in well presented coat & condition . Needs time .
2nd - Roseghyll Timeless Queen (Mrs A Johnson)
Small , busy , hopefully will grow on a little more , head a little too short in muzzle for me . Lovely outgoing temperament . Moved reasonably straight but legs were whirring a bit !
3rd - Dejurra Nocte Solis (Mrs A E Pitt)
Entries: 4 Absentees: 1
1st - Chorbeck Queen Of Jazz With Foxwater (Mrs J Spence)
Leggy & light framed narrow fronted grizzle . Feminine head , dark eye , neat ears . Good length & body shape so easily spanned , with double coat though it needs to clear , she moved very accurately , though would prefer better tailset .
2nd - Ravenside Sing Me A Song For Borderxpress (Mr R Wright)
Pale grizzle of 10 months , came without coat today so was very raw & babyish , head needs to develop , but she is narrow with clean shoulders & very lean easy span ribs of good shape . Rear lacking any muscle so her rear movement wasn’t good today , front ok , lacked drive in profile .
3rd - Lairehope Emerald (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)

Nice size quality grizzle with good proportions , good neck & firm topline with good tailset . Nice feminine head with dark eye & well set ears . Narrow fronted , clean shoulders , flattish rib shape of good length & easily spanned . Moved freely & accurately with good length of stride .
2nd - Mysulan Byards Lass (Mrs S J Baxter)
Typy red grizzle smaller bitch , ultra feminine head & very easy span though shorter rib than winner . would prefer a shade more bone & length of sternum . Well set & carried short tail . Moved very true but with rather short strides .

Rangy build , lithe bodied grizzle with powerful muzzle & underjaw & good length of skull . Excellent legs & very good feet . Firm topline with excellent tailset with neat carrot tail . She has a good underline free of deep brisket or keel . Moved on a long free accurate stride keeping a very good outline .
2nd - Howthwaite Molly Malone (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)
Sparkling blue who is very forward going & could slow down a bit !! Not quite the neck & front of the winner & slightly shorter bodied but also easily spanned so could “ get in” easily , just like the winner . Beat a very typy b I liked who was heavy in milk today .

11 month grizzle b with lovely outline , built on lithe workmanlike lines . Good head developing with dark eyes , little stop & strong muzzle . Good neck & clean shoulders , straight medium boned legs , good feet & narrow front . Lithe body well ribbed up and easily spanned . Strong loin & racy muscular rear . She moves rather fast , but travels on a long stride keeping her very good topline once settled . Coat in good order . She outmoved the dog puppy today with her strong firm & accurate movement . Liked her a lot BPIS

1st - Ravenside Dreamer (Mr A Holland)
Very narrow , quite leggy & very light framed grizzle , easily within standard for weight . Well balanced front to rear , straight legs & tight feet , flattish easy span ribs , firm rear , moved absolutely true with free stride & has good double coat, would just like a shade more strength of head & bone , but am sure she could get anywhere underground , & was a pleasure to judge
2nd - Lotts Beauty In Thornheswin (Mr J C Dixon)
rather opposite to winner , upstanding strongly built girl , so picks up a little heavy , good head , sound accurate mover in very good coat & pelt .

1st - Raedwulf Moonshine At Tarkaswell JW (Mr M & Mrs V Atkinson)
Nice size red , with good length of skull , little stop & medium length muzzle with good bite . Good length of neck into clean well placed narrow shoulders , front is narrow & straight legged with refined bone & tight feet . Rib is good shape & very easily spanned , well spaced ribs are carried well back & topline is firm with good gradual underline . Loin is strong , rear is racy & hocks let down well . Double coat just coming in , pelt thick & pliant . Tail is well set though could be a little shorter . She moved well , economical in profile , accurate away & back . Her narrowness , spannability & then picking up so light & balanced , I was happy to award her BCC , I understand it’s her 2nd , good luck for the future with her .
2nd - Comberdown Roisin Dubh (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
Another typy & light framed grizzle with good head , who picks up very light & moves soundly . A shade more compact than winner & not quite as much “ finish” as yet , but she too could easily do a days work I felt .
3rd - Howthwaite Gaan Divilish (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)

1st - EUW, WW Comet Fiery Lucifer (Mr Z Kubik)
Lovely colour blue & tan of handy size , in very fit fettle & harsh double coat though could be slightly more depth to it . Very feminine & attractive ottery head with lovely expression & good bite . Good front with lovely narrow shoulders nice bone & good feet . Spannable rib , excellent hindquarters , well set & carried tail , she thoroughly enjoyed her day out as never stopped wagging & beaming ! Moves freely & accurately , so I was nitpicking between her & limit winner , the latter just slightly better in underline & deeper coat with thicker looser pelt , wish i’d had a 2nd CC on the day , very close decision , RBCC .
2nd - CH Remony Rose Gold JW (Mrs A E Gregory)
Another quality grizzle , out of the top drawer , good coated bitch , slightly bigger all through than winner , typy & shows herself very well . She has nice feminine balanced head with good mouth , firm back line , good front & driving rear , with short carrot tail , is spannable , and moves very well from all angles .

Stylish , active , and very good moving Blue of 7 years . Lovely otter head , with fabulous eye & expression ,
Tall & leggy but very well made all through and can be spanned as is beautifully narrow , her scopey and free stride are lovely . Good coat & thick pelt finish the picture . BVIS .
2nd - Crosby Dark Duchess At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)
old fashioned stamp , still light & spannable & moves very well for her 13 years , deep double coat made her appear heavy , but she certainly doesn’t weigh heavy to lift .

Res - Caznray Just A Mystery From Thornheswin (Mr J C Dixon)
