My thanks to the Northern Club for the opportunity to judge their 40th Championship show and for their wonderful hospitality; to the exhibitors for giving me such a lovely entry and to my stewards Doreen Rushby & Tracy Peacock for their assistance through the day.
I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my day, as we expect from this club there was a wonderful atmosphere all day with good support for the winners and, of course, very impressive rosettes!
I was pleased with the entry and thought the Veteran class outstanding. In general exhibits were good types of Border, presented clean and reasonably well muscled. I dislike over handling and excessive stacking of exhibits, these are working terriers and if made right they will – eventually – stand right. In general heads were typical, some with excellent expressions. Coats, of course, were all over the place but where present were of good quality and in the main pelts were OK with some very good examples. Feet generally were OK but good tight well padded feet were definitely in the minority. Similarly ears were generally OK but small, well set, well shaped thick ears were scarce. Tails and tailset were very much a plus with some very good examples, just a few rather long or thin ones. I was pleased to find enough well made dogs who covered their ground cleanly without fuss and flicking but good movement was definitely one of the major problems, particularly in the bitches.
Shoulder placement was a problem in a significant number of exhibits, mostly these were upright shoulders out at the withers giving big problems with front movement. These may look good standing but these dogs are not sound on the move, a vital requirement for a Border.
I accept that an older dog can lose teeth or have a bite move but I was disappointed to find a number of young dogs with incorrect bites, missing and broken teeth. I thought a number of heads were weak, particularly across the jaw and these seem to go with rather small teeth, I wonder if these are related problems?

1st - Joncroft Templar Knight (Mr C Johnston)
Good head which should strengthen as he matures, nice strong jaw, good expression. Good for bone, nice tight feet, good coat with a decent pelt. Excellent angulations and so moving very well. A very pleasing type, lost out to the puppy dog on maturity.
2nd - Hobholt Hi Roller (Mr R G & Mrs E A Wright)
Bigger pup, head OK. Good shoulder, OK for feet & bone with good balance and a good tail & tailset, not in such good coat today but was moving well.
3rd - Otterwood Cyrus (Mr M J & Mrs J M Hollingsbee)
Fairly tight decision over 4th. Head OK but could be stronger over foreface, well prepared in good coat. Nice racy quarters and moved OK but not as well as first two.

These were all very impressive puppies.
1st - Keycharm Phantom by Ridgebow (Mr N Duxbury)
Lovely head & expression, strong jaw, good for bone with good angulations. Good thick pads & tight feet, excellent coat which is very thick making him look a bit heavy but easily spanned. An attractive mature pup, he moved out well to win BP.
2nd - Comberdown Finnegan (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
Another good one, not quite the head or expression of 1. Lovely shoulder, good feet & bone, lovely racy quarters, good tail & tail set. Presented in very good condition but short of coat today. Another very promising pup.
3rd - Stoneygin Chesta Coppapot (Mr G & Mrs D Rayner)
Another very promising puppy with a lovely head & expression, well set ears, good for bone, good shoulder, reasonable feet, well made quarters. Short of coat today and was reluctant to settle on the move but another bright prospect.
Res - Otterwood Cyrus (Mr M J & Mrs J M Hollingsbee)

Very mixed class, some here had bad bites, & tight bites. First two here were promising, both short of coat but such excellent movers.
1st - Lairehope Viking Spark (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)
Lovely head & expression, good eye, great shoulder, good racy quarters and excellent balance, well made with a strong loin. Moves very easily over the ground, the best mover here.
2nd - Houndshope Rest Dodd (Mrs M Wanless)
Pleasing head, rather more heavily built than 1, good for bone & OK feet, rather long but still OK for balance, another good mover who covered his ground well.
3rd - Remony Runrig (Mrs A E Gregory)
Not as strong in the head, lacking strength in jaw, in very good coat, tail & tailset OK. Overall not as well balanced but was OK on the move.
Res - Karison Klaret (Miss K Johnson)
VHC - Onthill Amaretto (Mr R & Mrs A Ramus)

Very close decision between the first two here who are both exciting prospects.
1st - Fehmarn Highland Encounter (Mrs E J Scott)
Ultra typical head, strong muzzle, nice eye, good ear set, OK for bone. Excellent shoulder, good quarters set on well padded feet, good tail & tailset. Well balanced, easily spanned and in a good coat, moved very well. In a rather tough challenge he showed well to take the reserve CC.
2nd - Ravenside Workforce (Mr M Lowry)
Good head with a strong jaw, nice eye & good ear set, just not quite as appealing as 1. Lovely bone and great neat feet, in fantastic coat which is really nice & sharp. A bigger dog but spannable, good tail well set and he also moved out very well.
3rd - Kosmic Sun over Karison (Miss K Johnson)
Very nice type, a smaller dog, coat over the top but of good quality. I liked his head & expression with lovely neat ears well set. OK for bone, good feet, well angulated with a neat tail & tail set & he was also moving out well.

Smartly presented dog, good strong head & jaw, well set ears. OK for bone, good feet, nice angulations fore & aft & a lovely carrot tail & set. Good head & expression, good earset. Not so well off for bone as the first 2, good set on tail. OK for angulations but moving a bit close today and very short of coat, however another quality dog in this good class.

A very good class, the first three were all quality dogs who could change places another day whilst the next two will trouble them when they grow their coats.

Good head & expression with a good strong jaw, good expression. Good neck running into the best of shoulders, well angulated behind with a great balance throughout, well presented in an excellent coat and moved out well easily covering his ground. Such a nice all round picture, he is mature & well finished and deserved his CC & BIS today against some strong competition.
2nd - Iacheslei Cantus JW (Miss A Harrison)
Another all round very good dog. Not so strong in head or so pleasing in expression as 1, but still OK. Beautifully angulated and a nice length with good rib. Good for bone, good tail & set. He moved out well and pushed hard in the challenge.

Movement was a problem for quite a few bitches here, with a lot of feet flipping about.

She stood away in this class, OK in head though could be stronger over the muzzle, well set ears and a good skull. Reasonable for bone and feet OK, lovely angulations fore & aft with good ribs and absolutely beautiful on the move. She was in a decent coat & showing OK. One I have judged and like before and she didn’t disappoint today. Lovely head with a very typical Border expression, good tight feet well padded. Well made with a good rib carried back to correctly angulated quarters. Shown in a good tight red coat she moved out OK but without quite the verve of the winner, in the challenge did enough to win the Reserve CC.

Very well presented bitch, put down in an excellent coat and showing her socks off. OK for head shape but her ears are carried a little high, good shoulder and well balanced, moved out well to take her place in this excellent class.

Stood alone but deserved his place in the strong dog challenge. OK in head, good bone and OK for balance, shown in very good coat and condition and moved out well.

What can I say about this class it was absolutely sensational, there were 11 dogs standing here who between them displayed all the many virtues of the breed, they were more than a credit to their owners. It was a desperate task to have to judge them and send some from the ring without cards – they fully deserved the applause that this generous audience gave them.
1st - CH Earthwise Deuteronomy ShCM (Culley, Anne; Orr, Joyce)
One I have awarded high honours to before and he didn’t disappoint today, he is such a nice type of Border. Super head and expression, well put together and in excellent condition for his 9 years. Showing and moving well today in a good red coat, just had that extra special to make him Best Veteran in this august company,
2nd - CH Ashbrae Poacher (Mr A & Mrs E Cuthbertson)
One I have never judged before but have often admired him from the ringside, he just oozes type from his ultra typical head to his correct well set tail. Fabulous head and expression, in a good red coat, moved OK and showed well, carries his 10 plus years lightly.
3rd - CH/Nord CH Otterbobs Ninezergh (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Another that I have never had the pleasure of judging and a youngster here being just 7 years. He is a lovely type of dog with a good head and expression, good angulations and rib; presented today in an excellent coat and he moved off well, an impressive dog all round.
