Thank you to the exhibitors for an extremely nice entry and for the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted. A warm sunny day with a welcome breeze made conditions ideal. A bonus was the neatly mown grass in the ring which was ideal to assess movement. I was fortunate to have two extremely efficient Stewards who ensured the smooth running of the ring, enabling me to finish my task in good time, despite a delay in the start of judging.
On the whole I was pleased with the exhibits presented to me which were clean, although many lacked the correct double jacket that the standard asks for. Front movement is still a concern as indeed was the variation in the size of some of the exhibits. Heads generally were good although some exhibits were rather heavy in ear. Temperament’s were excellent, just one or two not too keen on being handled on the table. Two exhibits had teeth missing and I found a couple with incorrect dentition.
Feet can tell you a lot about a dog and its lifestyle. The standard asks for feet to be small with firm pads. Flat feet not helped by long nails are most undesirable and indeed would be a drawback if the dog was carrying out the task for which he was originally bred. Scissor marks unfortunately were very much in evidence on some exhibits which spoilt their overall appearance.

1st - Benattivo Stitch In Time (Mr C & Mrs S Girling)
Well presented young dog, so nice for size, good body proportions for age, excellent jacket and pelt, has the neatest of feet, moved out with confidence.
2nd - Stineval Maraschino (Mr & Mrs A Horner)
Another youngster with so much to like about him, he has a nice head, with good ear placement and a strong underjaw. Was well presented and is good for bone. Narrow front with good length of body, he has a good thick pelt. Moved quite well but was not as positive as the winner.

1st - Cobstoneway River Magic (Miss C Spencer)
BPD. A very nice puppy presented in excellent coat, has a lovely “ottery” head with dark eye and keen expression, well proportioned bodylines with a nice tailset, sound racy quarters and small tight feet with firm pads. Moved well.
2nd - Cobstoneway Lazy River (Mesdames R & J Squibbs & Barker)
My notes actually read not much too choose between 1 and 2 as they are so very similar. This is hardly surprising as when I saw the catalogue, I find that they are actually litter brothers. Similar comments apply as for the winner with my final decision on placing them coming down to confidence on the move, with 1 having the slight edge over 2.

1st - Onthill Super Trooper (Mr R & Mrs A M Ramus)
A very smart young dog with lovely dark points, nicely proportioned but I hope he does not grown on anymore. Good for bone and was in an excellent jacket covering a thick pliable pelt. Moved well and looked good in profile.
2nd - Onthill Fernando (Mr R & Mrs A M Ramus)
When this class came into the ring I thought this one could have been my winner but he was not quite so positive moving. Very similar remarks apply although he is marginally better for size. Again when I look at the catalogue I find that both of these dogs turn out to be litter brothers and they will I am sure change places on many occasions in the future.

1st - Dowgri Diggory (Mr W & Mrs T J Baird)
A fine upstanding dog who was extremely fit and had good muscle tone. Built on good body lines, he has the neatest of feet with very firm pads. His jacket was harsh which covered a good thick pelt and he spanned with ease. Moved soundly.
2nd - Borderella Day Tripper (Mrs P South)
I really liked this dog and my first impression was that he could possibly be my class winner. He has a strong masculine head, keen expression and beautiful strong white teeth. Standing and in profile he looked super, moving away he ?drove? from his powerful rear quarters but coming towards me his front movement was not so positive. Well presented.

Stood out in this class. Nice for size and was not overdone in any way. Good head and expression, nice reach of neck and good shoulder placement. Moved well retaining his topline, is good for bone and has neat feet with firm pads.
2nd - Mingrovia Flintstone Chief At Rubyfin (Mrs S J Channer)
This dog has a lovely head with good dark points and expression, nice for overall size but could be slightly better in rib. He had a really harsh correct double jacket which covered the best of pelts and moved soundly.

1st - Dandyhow Beeline (Irving, K.M.)
DCC and BOB. My top winner on the day and what a lovely dog to go over. Set down in ‘tip top’ condition he has a strong masculine head with dark eyes, neat ears and varmity expression, with a correct mouth and strong underjaw. Good front and shoulders, he has a nice length of back, correct tailset, racy hindquarters and a topline that he held on the move. Spanned with ease, he has just the right amount of bone and I have to say the best feet here today. A good harsh jacket covered the most pliable of pelts and he was shown on a loose lead to advantage. There is nothing ‘flashy’ about this dog and in my opinion he is a really fit, honest, workmanlike Border that fits the standard so well.
2nd - Barterhound Twister JW (Mrs B B Roderick)
RDCC. Another good Border who is correct for size, has a good head with the keenest expression, good mouth, nice shoulder placement, good topline and tailset, shown in a correct double jacket, he spans well and has a good thick pelt. His positive free movement secured his placing today.

One I have admired in the past, correct for size, he has a nice head and strong jaw, good front and lay of shoulders, well proportioned body lines, is well balanced and has good feet. Scored for his excellent jacket but lost out in the challenge as he was a tad heavy today.
2nd - CH Byrons Greengrass (Mr J & Mrs H M Thomas)
This dog has matured well since I last judged him. Good head and expression with nice dark points and well placed ears. Good shoulders and rib, nice length of back and sound racy quarters. Spanned easily and has a good thick pelt. Moved out well and is a worthy champion.

1st - Hynerbrook Cassiterite (Patterson, J.H.A.; Marsh, B.J.)
9 years of age and enjoying his day out. He has a nice head with dark points and keen expression, nice for bone, good feet. He was carrying a little extra weight today but moved o.k. once he had settled.
2nd - Dandyhow Sir Toby (Wrenn, Tony; Langdon, Kara)
One of the best known Veterans we have in the Breed and still strutting his stuff so well at 13 years of age. He has a real ‘ottery’ head, keen eye and expression, justifiably he is rather white now in the foreface. Still narrow in front and is easily spanned. It was a joy to watch him enjoying his turn in the ring.

1st - Stineval Santina (Mr & Mrs A Horner)
presented in lovely condition and is so well constructed. She has a feminine head, with dark eye and keen expression, big strong white teeth. Good front with nice body proportions, level topline, sound racy quarters with firmly padded neat feet. Spanned with ease and had a correct jacket over the thickest of pelts.
2nd - Foxyard Better Behave At Emblehope (Miss D Bladen)
a very nice blue and tan puppy who was so correct in all quarters for her age. She has a lovely expression, but I felt would benefit from ‘tweaking’ some of her profuse face furnishings to complete the picture. Nice for type with a narrow front, good shoulder placement, just right for bone and has a good topline and tailset.

1st - Cobstoneway Moon River at Clipstone (Miss E & Mrs J Jackson)
BPIB. A really nice bitch and is so well put together. She has a refined feminine head with dark eye and varmity expression. Good reach of neck into well laid back shoulders with good length rib. Good length of back and nice topline which she held when moving. Her coat was of good texture and covered the most pliable thick pelt. It was a close decision between her and her litter brother for BPIS but she just had the edge on movement. I was delighted that she was placed TPG4.
2nd - Cobstoneway Bayou Sunrise (Mrs G Stevens)
Another who was a litter sister to my winner and to my 1st and 2nd in Puppy Dog. What an experience to have four puppies out of the same litter to run the rule over. Very similar remarks apply as for the winner except she is not quite so refined in head as 1 and her coat was just passing its best which detracted a little from her good bodylines.

set down in such lovely fettle and has lots of quality about her. She has a feminine head with good width of skull and strong muzzle. She has a nice reach of neck and good shoulder placement. Good length of back and tailset. Moved soundly and looked really good in profile.
2nd - Bortino Smiling Queen (Mr D K & Mrs D Martin)
difficult decision to judge between the first two, both being extremely nice bitches. She has an ‘ottery’ head with nice dark points and good strength of muzzle. Nicely proportioned throughout, she was sporting a correct double jacket and was easily spanned. Good sound racy quarters and tight feet. Moved ok. but not as well as my winner.

Correct for size, she has a good head and expression and was presented in fine fettle. She has a narrow front, with good legs and feet, the correct amount of bone, adequate length of back with good racy rear quarters and was sporting an excellent harsh coat over a good pliable pelt. Her sound movement secured her this well deserved placing.
2nd - Rexlands Golden Plover By Karison JW (Miss K & Mrs D Johnson & Pearson)

was very pleasing to go over with lots to like about her. Good head and expression with dark points, nicely shaped ears and reach of neck. Scored on her narrow front, she has good bone with nice body proportions and racy quarters with the neatest of feet. Not overdone in any way and is correct for size. Looked good in profile and moved soundly.
2nd - Mansergh Singsong (Miss A Roslin-williams)
another nicely constructed bitch with just the right amount of bone and so nice for size. She has a good neck and shoulder, good mouth with strong teeth. Nicely ribbed back, she was easily spanned and was sporting a new jacket of good texture covering a really thick pelt.

BCC. Like my Dog CC winner, this bitch was set down in ‘tip top’ condition and has a feminine head, dark points, good eye and keen expression. Narrow in front, she has a good reach of neck, and topline and is well ribbed back. She was presented in a correct double jacket of excellent texture covering a really good thick pelt. She spans easily and was just so well balanced throughout. Looked good in profile and moved out with enthusiasm to secure her place and gain her second CC on the day.
2nd - Benattivo Rosina JW (Mrs S J & Mr C P Girling)
RBCC. Lovely for size and breed type she has a good otter head, good eye, well placed ears and keen expression. She has a good neck, topline and tailset with sound racy hindquarters with good feet. Easily spanned, good pelt and shown in a correct double jacket. Nice for bone, she was moving really well and with such confidence to secure her RCC.

1st - Brockfox Beretta (Barnett, Miss M.E.)
one of the breed’s newest champions and such a live wire. She has a pleasing head with keen expression and dark eye. Good lay of shoulder and length of rib. She is strong in loin and has well muscled racy hindquarters. She had a correct double jacket covering a thick pelt and was spannable.
2nd - CH Southash Blue Betty Boo Gameway JW (Mrs P Clark)
A really well balanced B/T who is so well constructed with good body proportions and was set down in a correct double coat of excellent texture. She has a narrow front with a pleasing head, nice reach of neck and good shoulder placement, good topline and racy well angulated rear quarters. This is one who I have admired on many occasions but today, she was just lacking that extra sparkle and enthusiasm which was disappointing.

BV. 8 years old and set down in a good harsh jacket. She just loves the showring, being such a natural showgirl. Although she is justifiably getting rather white in the foreface, she is just so fit and well balanced and moved out really well.
2nd - Springhill Pacify of Cobstoneway (Mrs G Stevens)
7 years old and looking really good, she was in a full double jacket which made her appear heavier than she was. She still has a good topline with a nice tailset and moved out soundly to secure her place.
