Show Type: Championship
Judge: Mrs Janet Lee (Tythrop)
Sincere apologies to my exhibitors, the committee failed to inform me the proposed order of group judging had changed & the Terrier group was brought forward, the tannoy call was the 1st thing I knew about it. My back spasm during junior dog meant I was reduced to shuffling, sorry.
Most dogs were new to me & temperaments in the ring were good, my winners could do the job they were intended for being free from coarseness & lumber, spannable & narrow, with corresponding good construction & movement.
Several heads were short in skull & blocky, more resembling the balance of an Asian Short Clawed Otter, than an English one, the latter have longer than broad flat skulls, clean cheeks & relatively short muzzles parallel in profile to their skull, Borders should have large teeth with good scissor bite to be effective. Today, square, deep skulls, often with round eyes & very short narrow muzzles with small teeth were in evidence. These too strong square heads tended to have heavy fronts & frames to match.
Many fronts were placed too far forward with pro-sternum behind point of shoulder, which lacked length & layback, the too short & steep upper arms having no support, badly affecting movement, the dogs moved away with their fronts crossing, when only two legs should be visible. As an alternative a few were close behind & swung in front, so again “four legs”. Profile movement lacked ?travel?, being up & down short choppy strides rather than smooth & forward going with drive off the hocks.
Although bone wasn’t generally too fine nor too heavy some didn’t have enough through pasterns into feet, & they lacked the depth of pad to ensure soundness if worked regularly.
My major concern, however, was coats & especially pelts. When I came into the breed Borders were shown in deep double coat, always.Dogs then looked heavier than they were due to these double coats & lots of pelt which the standard says MUST be thick – not because they had big frames with drum tight skins.. Coat density & pelt are directly related, no coat, thus thin skin, but they should still be loose & pliant. Tight, paper thin skins without depth of under or topcoat is not what the standard calls for, nor any use to a working terrier. A great advantage to the dog is a continuous double coat that can be worked or shown all year round.

1st - Oatberry Reason (Mrs K Tuffin)
8m light grizzle, light framed & very narrow so easily spanned.Dark eye, well placed ears & good bite. Would prefer deeper coat & thicker pelt. Moved freely in profile, still needs to firm coming & going.
2nd - Xapex Santiago At Otterwood (Mr M J & Mrs J M Hollingsbee)
8m strongly built bl/t, very mature for age, with commensurate strong head & dark eye. Bite could be better. Harder to span than winner, moved with drive behind but rather erratically in front.

1st - Orangebox Firecracker (Mr M & Mrs T Anscombe)
Smart 10 m light grizzle, narrow, active & sound. Very firm in backline & balanced angulation, well set & carried tail. Ears eyes & mouth pleasing, but would prefer a longer skull. Easily spanned, moved freely off his hocks & true. BPD
2nd - Iacheslei Cantus (Miss A Harrison)
another 10 m grizzle. Not as narrow nor as easily spannable. Good skull, forface & underjaw, correct bite. Firm backline & strong hind movement, rather erratic in front. In good double coat. Beat a good fronted puppy who wasn?t moving out confidently today.

1st - Hawcoat Blue Bertie (Mrs E J & Miss R C Larner)
15m dark grizzle. Liked his size & balance, well within standard weight. Masculine head of balanced proportions, dark eye & good big teeth. Good length of neck into straight narrow, well boned front, well angulated & set back on the body, really good deep tight feet. Flat spannable rib of good length, deep loin & strong well muscled hindquarters. Short thick tail & has super deep double coat with loose pliant pelt. Moved accurately with drive & enthusiasm. His outline could be enhanced by better trimming.
2nd - Dandyhow Beeline (Irving, K.M.)
Another quality grizzle of 14m I liked & is within standard for weight. Well proportioned head with flat skull, dark eye, well set v ears & good bite. Straight narrow front with clean shoulders, medium bone & good feet.. Flat spannable rib, short coupled to well angulated hindquarters. Excellent crisp topcoat with undercoat, though not as deep as the winner. Accurate away & back, but hunching a little in backline going round which cost him today.

Strong loin & good hindquarters, well set tail In good coat & very fit condition.. Moved straight with a long free stride.

1st - Quarryway Dill (Mrs B Williams & Mr K E Johnson)
Light grizzle dog of 2 ½ years. Have watched this quality male since a puppy & he always catches my eye. Beautiful otter head, flat in skull, slightly longer from ear to eye than moderately broad, with proportionate short strong muzzle & good bite. Love his neat v-shaped ears that are so well placed & carried & his super placed & shaped dark eyes, which give him real Border expression. Reachy neck into well placed narrow shoulders. Straight front, pleasing quality bone & tight deep feet. Good spannable shape to rib, well carried back into strong loin. Medium angulation behind with defined second thigh & let down hocks, producing drive. Has a well set & carried tail, could be a tad shorter & thicker. Beautifully presented in pinwire topcoat & good undercoat. A light on his feet accurate & free moving dog. DCC & BOB & shortlisted in the group. Good luck for the future.
2nd - Cedarhill Authorized JW (Mrs C Dean)
Slightly smaller dark grizzle dog who also draws my eye for type & balance in outline. Good otter head & expression. Reachy neck & firm level backline. Not quite as long & clean in shoulder nor upper arm as winner. Good legs & feet. Spannable rib & well muscled hindquarters. Super double coat & thick pelt. Not as light on his feet as 1st nor as accurate in front. Considered for RCC, but couldn?t match open winner on front or movement.

1st - Mansergh Float To Plushcourt (Judge, B.A.)
4 years light grizzle, workmanlike type with a light frame, no cut up underline here due to being well ribbed back with a deep loin. High earset & plainer forface detract a little from his head, but his skull is long & flat without cheek & he has big teeth & strong jaw, nice shape dark eye & parallel planes. Good length of neck into excellent clean shoulders on his narrow front with really good length of upper arm , nothing loaded. Medium bone & deep tight feet. Flat ribs are easy to span & he comes to hand well. Particularly good length & set croup with well muscled hindquarters, clean, well let down hock. His length of stride & drive keeping a firm level backline, travelling round the ring with purpose impressed, as did the accuracy. Would have liked a bit more topcoat, but what was there was good. Excellent undercoat all over & loose thick pelt. RCC
2nd - Kersfell Comet JW (Sneddon, Margaret)
Thought this 6 years dark grizzle would be my winner. Beautifully balanced outline standing on this handy sized male of good type. Lovely to go over with pleasing head, eye, & expression. Big scissor bite. Good front, excellent shoulders, easy span. Liked his length of bone behind, though not as powerful as 1st. In first class coat & condition. Didn’t move as well as I’ve seen him previously, not really striding out like the winner.

1st - Plushcourt The Bees Knees In Thoraldby (Mrs B A Judge)
Just 9 months bl/t, a blast from the past for type & style. Really good bitch’s head having good length of flat skull, well set ears & a superb punishing muzzle & underjaw filled by enormous teeth. Reachy clean neck sweeping well back onto the body into refined long & laid back shoulders. Narrow front, good bone, strong pasterns & deep feet. Really well ribbed up narrow body with firmest of backlines. Good length & set of croup with well set if slightly longer tail. Correct racy hind angulation. Moved across the ground with free accurate action keeping a super firm backline. Double coat just starting to silver up, light tan legs & head. Although still raw, would gladly have brought her home. BP.
2nd - Southash Blue Betty Boo Gameway (Mrs P Clark)
Another blue of handy size, just 10 months from a more contemporary mould, & much more mature for age. Pretty head with dark eye & well set ears. Neat front assembly, spannable rib, firm well angulated hindquarters. Moved well if a little puppyish in front. Outstanding coat of harsh texture well silvered with depth & good pelt. Not quite the strength of muzzle, big teeth nor length of rib of the winner, but stylish & has quality.

Good class, all those I shortlisted have narrow straight moving fronts. Much diversity in development decided places.
1st - Hawcoat Sweet Fairy (Mrs E J & Miss R C Larner)
Old fashioned pale grizzle of 15 months, litter sister to JD winner. Well balanced head with good bite of big teeth. Narrow front well boned into deep feet. Clean well placed narrow shoulders, flat long rib easy to span. Well muscled racy hindquarters. Good depth double coat & lovely loose pelt. Moved straight with freedom & cadence. Could be a bit firmer in backline & needs tidying.
2nd - Grindelvald Miss Teak At Eltonfurze (Mrs A Fray)
14m red grizzle with type & quality. Liked her head, nice eye & neat ears well set. Narrow clean front, nicely ribbed & good hindquarters with well let down hock, super tail well set. Moved very well. just lacked both under & topcoat & therefore thickness of pelt in comparison to winner.

Dark Grizzle with typical Border outline. Lovely head eye & ears giving good expression. Firm backline, good tailset, short thick tail. Presented very well in excellent deep double coat with good pelt. In super fit condition. Not as clean in upper arm, therefore out at elbow moving towards, but uses herself well behind & has balanced profile on the move keeping her backline.
2nd - Sextonmagic Betula of Withershins (Mr M J Day)
handy size bl/t, rather finer in bone. Nice head & good bite. Narrower in front than 1st, but not as positive behind. Rather flat feet not helped by being completely out of coat.

1st - Pherjan Phoebe (Mr N & Mrs M Yates)
Quality, type & good balanced outline on this red of 2 ½ years. Correct head proportions with good muzzle & bite, would prefer less rounded ears though they are well placed. Good topline & tailset , well ribbed up & strong loin. Equal length of bone & good angulation at both ends enable her to move smoothly& accurately. Deep double coat & sufficient pelt. Would prefer just a shade less condition.
2nd - Plushcourt Royal Mint (Mrs B A Judge)
Another good quality bitch, only 20 months & still a shade immature. Like her length of skull, dark eye & good big teeth. Ears a shade heavy. Good shoulders, flat rib, easily spannable & strongly made hindquarters. Moved balanced with accuracy & drive, keeping a good outline. Just not the depth of coat nor finish of 1st.

Good class of quality
1st - Chesterton Broken Promise (Mooney, Mr. A.J. & Mrs. W.M.C.)
Quality typy grizzle of 8 years, age certainly hasn’t withered her, handles & moves like a youngster as a true working BT should still be capable into veteran . Gave her her 1st RCC in 02, then short of coat & heavy she had to stand down the line in 05. Today she was lithe & lovely to go over. Feminine otter head, good skull & strong muzzle with big teeth & good scissor bite. Reachy neck, clean long shoulders & long upper arm with pro sternum well forward. Good length of flat spannable rib, strong coupled to excellent well muscled hindquarters. Blew me away with her profile movement , long, free & elastic, whilst keeping a spirit level backline, could see her following horse or hounds with ease . Straight coming on & driving away. Harsh topcoat starting to blow, but the best deep undercoat & loose thick pliant pelt of the day. BCC. Thought she made a good feminine version of the DCC.
2nd - Ottaswell First Edition (Jobson, Mr. K.& Mrs. S.L.)
Quality red of 5, maturity suits her. Correct for size & weight. Feminine otter head with lovely neat v-shaped ears & dark eye. Straight clean front with elbows in, spannable rib & strong loin. Super tailset & tail. Put down in excellent coat & fit condition, although I prefer more hair on legs & especially feet. Moved very well in all directions particularly in front, just not quite the scope of the winner, but few have. RCC.
