I would first like to thank the Officers and Committee of Leeds City & District Canine Association Championship Show for inviting me to judge at their show, and for the hospitality shown to me on the day. However, most of all, thank you to all the exhibitors for providing me with such a quality entry to assess on this, my first appointment in the breed at this level. I had the privilege of going over so many quality dogs that difficult decisions often had to be made. As always, coats were at different stages, sometimes reflected in the placings, but coats come and go, construction does not. I did not discern any kinked tails and no bad temperaments were apparent. The adequately sized ring however was quite difficult for the exhibitors to circumnavigate, with varying gradients, going uphill away from the judge, coming back downhill but with another gradient across the ring to cope with as well. There were several bumps and hollows in the ring as well, in places which made standing your exhibit to best effect not quite so easy. Many astute exhibitors realising this changed their handling technique to cater for this, some did not

Attractive, light red grizzle with a black muzzle to his masculine head. Well set ears, nice eye and good skull. Good neck and lengthy body, narrow throughout, with good balance and depth to chest. Presented in super condition with a harsh, double coat and thick pelt. Very sound when moving with a good length of stride, level topline and correctly set on and carried tail. A very promising puppy who did well to beat his sibling who pushed him hard. On another day I am sure they could well change places. Well deserved Best Puppy in Breed.

Lovely grizzle dog. Beautifully balanced dog who possesses a super otter like head with super dark eye and keen expression, strong muzzle and big teeth. Nice neck and forehand into narrow shoulders with firm level topline, easily spanned and correctly set on short carrot tail, which he carried well. Great rear hindquarters and short pasterns, which he used to advantage to stride out around the ring. Small neat feet. Presented and handled really well. To be critical, just lacking topcoat condition at present. Was considered for further honours, perhaps on another day.

1st - Chesterton Viva Las Vegas (Mr A J & Mrs W Mooney)
Quality well proportioned and balanced 19 month old grizzle dog. Correct head with a lovely expression and strong jaw. Good reach of neck, very good straight narrow front with ribs carried well back. Easily spannable. Good topline and tailset with correct length of tail. Strong racy hindquarters, small neat feet. Presented in good hard condition and with a decent double jacket and thick pelt. Covered the ground soundly and economically with drive, from all angles.
2nd - Ravenside Play The Game Kersfell JW (Mrs M Sneddon)
Dark grizzle and tan. Possesses a good masculine head, moderately broad skull, keen expression, well set on ears and good bite. Excellent neck and shoulders, and good return of upper arm. Lovely bone and feet. Excellent rib and easily spanned. Strong loin and good topline and tailset. Shown in a good topcoat, with a decent undercoat and pelt. This still very excitable youngster continues to give his handler a very tough time, doing all he could to present himself in the worst possible manner especially when moving around the ring. However despite this, on the odd occasion when he did co-operate, glimpses of his qualities could be appreciated.

1st - Brumberhill Bit O’Blarney JW (Mr S A Mcpherson)
Well-made quality young blue & tan dog who exudes breed type. Lovely head and expression, dark eye, shallow stop, masculine yet without any coarseness. Beautifully balanced throughout. Stands on super straight legs and feet with the best of fronts. Well ribbed back with good topline and underline. Easily spanned. Well coated with ample ticking and a thick loose pelt. Good angulation front & rear. Moved effortlessly around the ring really using his well-set on tail and carried himself beautifully as though he owned the ring, and today he did. Delighted to award him the Dog CC, BOB and was delighted when he subsequently went on to win TG1. Very well done.
P.S. I offered to buy this dog at 8 weeks old when I went to view the litter of puppies. However his breeder kindly declined saying, he would be retained for showing. C’est La Vie !

I have watched this dog many times from the ringside and admired his outstanding qualities and was not disappointed after going over him. Superb blue & tan epitomising breed type, well-proportioned skull with sufficient strength of foreface and possessing a lovely quizzical expression. Lovely straight, narrow front with neat feet. Correct width and depth of chest, good length of body and strength of loin, when asked stood effortlessly without any external influence completely balanced. Well presented in good harsh, dense coat with a thick pliable pelt. Moved well covering the ground soundly both in profile and fore and aft. Today just did not seem to have the ring presence of the eventual Dog C.C. winner in the challenge. Well deserved Reserve Dog CC.
2nd - CH Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
It was a pleasure to go over this eye catching grizzle dog, who was beautifully balanced and proportioned. Possesses an otter like head, dark eye and short, strong muzzle and alert expression. Good reach of neck flowed into a lovely layback of shoulder, narrow body, ribbed well back and strong in loin. His tail was moderately short and well set, although I preferred the tail carriage of my winner at times. Well angulated front and rear and in good hard condition, although could not quite match the movement of my winner today. Well presented in excellent hard condition with a correct double coat and thick pelt.
