Show Type: Championship
Venue: National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, B40 1NT
Judge: Mr David Hunt (Ottaswell)
Entries: 109 dogs, 140 bitches making 279 entries
It was a tremendous honour and a great privilege some 3 years ago to be asked by the Kennel Club to judge at Crufts in 2025. Having attended and enjoyed this show over many years it felt strange to be finally standing centre stage.
My grateful thanks to the exhibitors and handlers from both home and overseas for giving me a fantastic entry of 249 dogs making 279 entries. I wish to sincerely thank my 2 stewards Ken Francis and Bill Ashworth for organising the ring and me so efficiently and thus avoiding any delays between classes in what was a long and tiring day starting at 08.00. Thanks also to Joyce Martin for the excellent photographs.
I was looking for an exhibit that best fitted the standard and most importantly that they were spannable. With kennel cough widespread throughout the country I requested handlers show me the exhibits teeth to avoid possible further spread. On the day I tried to ensure that each dog was given equal time on the table and moving around the ring.
The general condition of most exhibits was fine with coats as usual at all stages and some appearing to have been stripped the day before. Movement was generally good at the rear but less so in front where several were loose and moving in various directions usually caused by poor shoulder construction. Feet were disappointing in some exhibits being spread and well down on their pasterns with thin pads. I found 2 kinked tails and in the mouths 2 undershot plus several with missing and misaligned teeth. All males were entire. Temperaments were good throughout the day.
I was pleased with my final lineups and delighted to see my Best of Breed make the shortlist and be awarded Group 4

1st - CH/Ger/NL CH Brackenfell Bok To Bach JW WW17/18 (Mr C Hall & Miss L Ellis)
I last judged this dog, as a junior, at National Terrier in 2014 where I awarded him his first of 50 CC’s along with Best of Breed. Now at 12.5 he has lost little of his appeal. Still has a good bite and is spannable. He carries a super head with strong muzzle and is well angulated at both ends. In tip top condition he carries a harsh coat and powered around the ring with confidence. All border wherever you looked at him. Delighted to award him Best Veteran in Breed.
2nd - Mysulan Going Solo JW VW (Mrs S J Baxter)
Approaching 10 years old this well known veteran is nicely shaped, of a decent size with a broad head and has a correct bite of large teeth. His straight narrow front leads to a body that is well ribbed back. Moving efficiently he holds his topline well and carries a harsh b&t coat. Lots to like.
3rd - Mysulan Easy Ryder (Mr B Jepson)
Left the ring. A strongly built b&t with nice head and well set tail. Steady on the move he has a thick pelt but I would prefer more ticking.

Another 8 month old g&t of good size with nice head shape and little stop. Moderate length of neck and has a good thick pelt. Let down by a weak rear end and whispy tail.

Of good size this 9 month g&t has a pleasing head with correct bite of large teeth. A nicely shaped neck flows into a narrow body with good ribcage. He was in fit condition and with well let down hocks covered the ground well. He was shown to advantage but lacked coat on the day.

1st - Sui CH, CH Awbrooksky Never Back Down JW WW23 (Mr R & Miss L Goddard)
A dog I awarded the DCC to, as a junior, on my last appointment in 2022 and my opinion of him has not changed. Now as a mature adult he is of an ideal size, spans well and look balanced from all angles whenever and wherever you look at him. Has a super head, large teeth set square to the jaw, flat skull and dark eye to give great expression. His neck flows to a well laid shoulder, ribs of good depth and length, a strong loin and good bend of stifle at rear end with a correct tail set. In a harsh double coat and loose pelt. He moved freely with correct action both coming, going and around the ring. He was handled to perfection and never stopped showing. Pleased to see him in the shortlist of 8 in the strongest of terrier groups and delighted to see him awarded Group 4 in the big ring.
2nd - CH Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
So much to like about this well known dog, a fine example of the breed, who has quality in all departments. Beautiful otter head of excellent proportions. A great neck flows into a deep, narrow body well angulated at both ends, with excellent topline and tail set. In super fit working condition he spans with ease and moves with purpose both to and fro. He is alert and at one with his handler. In a better double coat than when I last judged him, being harsh with a pliable pelt. Awarded him The RDCC just preferring the movement in profile around the ring of the winner.
3rd - CH Yorkpiece Fiery Lucifer (Mrs J L Lee)
Another worthy UK Champion who I awarded highly at my previous appointment. An ideal size he carries a super head with dark eye and well placed ears held close to the head. His straight narrow front with enough bone stands on small tight feet. His excellent shoulder construction and well ribbed body lead to a well angulated rear and good tail placement. He excels in coat, being thick, harsh with undercoat and a thick pelt. He moved out well with an easy stride.
