Having attended & a long association with this breed club I was very honoured when I received the invitation to judge this show. It is pleasing that the club has such a wealth of supporters who do such sterling work and put on shows that make you want to return to. Walking into this venue today brought back many memories of the past and I am sure the pioneers of the club would be thrilled to see how it has prospered from humble beginnings. The Border Terrier continues to hold its own compared to many of today’s terrier breeds both as a companion and show dog. Breed standards were compiled by looking at the dogs of the time and their working capabilities fitting this purpose, this should still be adhered to now despite hunting no longer being allowed. This being said dogs should be presented for the show ring to the best of an owner’s capabilities, in hard muscular condition and coat presented clean and fit for the purpose of working in rough terrain.
I today found mouths to be good in the majority and I like to see large dentition along with a correct scissor bite. Several had eyes that needed attention in the way of cleaning before coming into the show ring. We still are seeing the incorrect flipping front action due to short upper arms and if not addressed this will become the norm. After my last appointment, I was pleased to only see a small minority where scissoring had been used on the coats which should not be the case. I did find today several coats that I would class as broken rather than the desirable tight harsh top weatherproof coat with undercoat for warmth. On a positive note, the bitches were easy to span and only a minority of males could not be. Pelts were pretty good being both thick & loose.

handy workmanlike size this bl/t has the correct size & shaped ribbing, he is clean in front with neat feet, firm flexible loin, shows himself well and enjoys himself which is always good to see. Typical in head shape with dark expressive eyes, correct ear size, set & shape, sound easy flowing movement, shown in good hard muscular condition & in good double coat, has a pleasing balance front & rear, racy hindquarters with strong firm hocks.
2nd - Chorbeck Chatty Man JW ShCM (Mrs H Haughton)
like his skull & strength of jaw, slightly larger all through than 1, correct ribbing, slightly long in loin but despite this does hold a firm top line both stood & moving, neat compact feet, well set tail of good length & carriage.

1st - Forest Zpod Chlumskych Haju Glebeheath (Mrs J Guvercin)
very much a show man & takes your eye on entering the ring, scores highly for correct feet which is an essential part of a working dog, correct width in front with lovely shoulder set, body developing well for young age, has good strong jaw & correct bite, skull still ends time to develop but confident it will in time, moderate length of neck, in a super double coat of correct texture, good tail carriage, length & set on, stands firm at rear without exaggeration.
2nd - Comberdown Likely Lad (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
compared to 1 very raw at just 6 months but has the essentials of a good puppy, lovely size, well shaped head with neat ears of good size, keen expressive dark eyes, not heavy in bone which suggests his finished size will be desirable, correct neat feet, for one so young moved well both fore & aft.

bl/t of pleasing size, enough bone but not heavy, was more settled in this second class & therefore moved with more precision, like his dark keen eyes & well set ears on a pleasing skull shape, nice short but strong muzzle with good dentition, straight front when stands himself, neat feet, well shaped rib & correct in length of loin, just needs to tighten more in his rear, tail well set but would like a better shape.

apart from being short of top coat today I thought this male very pleasing to handle, well-shaped skull, strong jaw & good bite, lovely ribbing & strong flexible loin, is of a pleasing overall size & has an excellent rib that can be spanned, in good muscular condition, well-set tail, took time to settle on the move.
2nd - Tyneotter Bolt From The Blue (Mrs N Anderson)
bl/t looks heavier than 1 but it is just a heavier coat, spannable ribbing & is of pleasing size, strong head with good bite, dark eyes, good ear size & shape, moved well in rear & just needs to tighten in front, good strong double coat.

has a good strong loose pelt, ribs well placed, firm in loin, tail rather high set & carried at times, reasonable in head shape, good dentition, ears well set but rather large, in good double coat, well shaped feet with thick pads. Owner tending to stand him out in front rather than front legs being under the withers.

1st - Whittonglebe Poacher (Mr G & Mrs J Mackenzie)
won this class with room to spare, excellent size with correct bone, in excellent double coat with that rough worker look, pleasing in his front with correct width, compact feet, not a flashy dog but if tidied more he would be enhanced, sound free easy stride.
2nd - Beaconpike Adonis (Miss J Strother)
well shaped in head with strong short muzzle, ears well set but need to be smaller, he is a pleasing size, good ribbing & loin, feet need to be tidied & firmer, good tail set on, length & carriage. Moved better in rear than in front.

Difficult decisions as all three dogs I have done well in previous judging, assignments and all have different levels of breed attributes so it was very much a case of judging them on the day’s performance and weighing up the breed points. On another day my decisions could have been very different.
1st - CH Stineval Lambert JW (Mr A & Mrs C Horner)
judged him as a raw youngster in a puppy group & thought his potential was most promising. Approaching 4 he is now very much in his prime & never seen him looking better than he did today. Presented in excellent firm condition as was his coat which was double & of excellent texture. Like his size & bone, excellent ribbing, firm flexible loin, well-shaped neat feet, good carrot tail correctly set on & carried, full of showmanship today & moved out well. Typical in head with excellent short strong jaw, big strong dentition, keen expression & good sized v shaped ears. Res C.C.
2nd - CH Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
approaching 5 this male was my Res C.C. winner the last time I judged & I predicted a positive future which no one can deny he has certainly had. Lots to admire about this well shaped male, highly desirable head shape with good keen eye, well set ears of correct size, moderate length of neck flows into a good shoulder set with equal upper arm, in excellent body shape, thick loose pelt, easy to span & light but firm bone, good double coat, neat compact feet, he has a sound free easy stride in front with propulsion from his rear, well set hocks standing firm, just lacking in enthusiasm & spark today but like us we all have off days.

credit to the owner this 12 yr old was certainly in good condition, handy sized & not heavy in body as many veterans can be, pleasing head shape, still maintaining a good hard condition & in good double coat of hard texture, she moved out well with confidence & held a firm top line.
2nd - Otterpaws Firebird ShCM VW (Miss A M Dixon)
another of handy workmanlike size with moderate bone, she is feminine & has a good double coat with harsh texture to top coat & abundant undercoat, stands firm in her rear but preferred the front of 1.

pushed hard for top placing & one that I liked on first impression, lovely rich red coat of excellent texture, super head shape with a keen expression, well shaped & set ears, feminine & particularly well balanced for young age, moved out very well both fore & aft, compact feet, just needs to gain confidence being handled on the table but it was her very first show.

1st - Otterbobs Beatrix JW (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
caught my attention on first move around, excellent size & balance, she is so well proportioned for a bitch, lovely rich red colouring & in good coat with the densest of under coat & perfect thick loose pelt, good in front & rear balance, first class in shoulder & upper arm, absolutely loved her head in all departments, excellent keen expressive eyes, looks very much a handful but was expertly piloted into winning the class and then in the line up I just kept being drawn back to her. I have awarded her mother & grandmother top honours and this is evidence that a good breeder with a strong bitch line can continue to produce well. C.C. & B.I.S.
2nd - Stineval Sasha JW (Mr A & Mrs C Horner)
another pleasing youngster, lovely in head & neck, good top line well held, correct bone & size, particularly liked her sound quarters & well set tail, prefer pelt & coat of 1. Nice free steady mover with well held top line. Has good feet & was in excellent body condition.

Slow maturer with a good future.

1st - Picer Mirabel Ostler (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
one I feel you need to get your hands on to fully appreciate her size & shape, profuse bl/t coat of good texture, would like more ticking for preference, liked her head with dark keen eyes correctly set, good v shaped ears, very sound on the move with particularly sound quarters that drive with good forward propulsion, neat feet. Moved well in this class then in the challenge when some then became sluggish & loosing their top lines she was still full of spirit & firm. Res C.C.
2nd - Otterpaws The Thunder Rolls (Miss A M Dixon)
bigger than I like for a bitch but scored well for her soundness, moved well with a good stride & precision, well proportioned head piece, has a firm top line stood & on the move, good ribbing in shape, well set tail, completely in her undercoat today.

1st - Beaconpike Solstice (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
very full jacket today so looks heavier than she is when you get hands on, her coat has excellent texture & is double, maybe nearly ready for a strip out, easy to span in rib, short firm loin, moved a little over enthusiastically today so not as precise in her footing, sound well set rear & good tail shape & set.
2nd - Northborders Chianti (Mrs J A Fletcher)
feminine all through from head to hock, bl/t short double coat well presented, has a good straight front, easy to span rib, racy quarters & well set tail she carries correctly, super neat feet, just prefer the flow from neck to shoulder of 1.
3rd - Ragatam Caol Ila At Baillieswells (Miss T Peacock)

1st - Haystoun Cosmic Dancer At Paleside (Mr D & Mrs D Mitchell)
very appealing in profile & did not disappoint on handling her, very nicely proportioned all through with highly desirable head, lovely otter head & strong jaw with strong dentition, well set shoulders, correct in rib & firm in her loin, stands firm in rear with sound hocks, compact feet, double bl/t coat quite close & she is in the hardest of condition. Strong consideration today for top honours but in the challenge began to look sluggish on stack & owner had her front too far forward. One I am sure will go to the top
2nd - Glebeheath Ophelia (Mrs J Guvercin)
finer all through than 1 but well proportioned & balanced, double coated bl/t would prefer slightly harsher in texture, stands with a balance of front & rear with firm top line & flowing gradual under line, correct rib so easy to span & loose thick pelt, moved out well just tending to want to rush but handler had her well controlled.

1st - Raedwulf Moonshine At Tarkaswell JW (Mr M & Mrs V Atkinson)
another I considered worthy of top honours but after winning class seemed to lose her spark, so much to like in size & shape, correct head with good ear size & set, moderate in neck length into flowing shoulder placement, correct in ribbing & firm flexible loin, excellent feet, another from this kennel in perfect coat & condition.
2nd - Tarkaswell Sea The Stars (Mrs C E Sansom)
a shade larger than 1 but still so feminine, one who has all the breed attributes and in excellent condition, correct harsh top coat & undercoat, good pelt, can span her rib with ease, neat compact feet, good tail carriage & set on, moved with enthusiasm & was well handled, sound in her rear would prefer a shade tighter in her front action.

feminine in size, won class on her sound fore & aft movement, for some reason she was not keeping her head raised on the move but could still see sound movement, easy to span rib, good straight front but tends to stand over stretched in front by owner, not a heavy coat but of good texture, neat compact feet.
2nd - Kensesqui Junitoite By Fairhambrook (Mr P Tomlinson)
well shaped head with good eye, moderate neck, would like more upper arm, good rib & loin, stands sound in her rear, moved better in rear than in front.
