This was my first-time awarding Challenge Certificates in Border Terriers and many thanks to those that entered under a non-breed specialist, and well done for braving what was a bitter wind. If this was a representative entry, then I am heartened by the general health and condition of the breed. Good coats, good pelts and super large dentition were the majority. There are some nice youngsters in the lower classes. Just two points as a non-specialist if I might be permitted, firstly the standard calls for a small ear and I found quite a few otherwise nice exhibits with large houndy ears which did somewhat detract from the overall expression. Secondly several dogs broke quite markedly at the front pastern which spoilt the overall impression on the move, these points need watching.

Some nice ones to go over at the start of the day
1st - Bluebabel Border Song (Mr K P & Mrs N B Yates)
Quality dog who impressed for his overall size and proportions. Very typical head with good breadth to skull and lovely keen dark eye. Neat ears. Good length of neck into well laid shoulders. Nice front assembly and good depth to the body. Well ribbed back. Pleasing topline and set of his short tail. Moved very well fore and aft. Not in the best of jackets by any stretch of the imagination but what I was able to feel was of good harsh texture. Lack of coat was just one transient fault and this will rectify itself, so did not overlook the other qualities of this very nice specimen.
2nd - Louajak Blue Fizz (Miss C Gwilliam)
B/T. Another of quality. Quite mature for 7 months. Another with a very typey headpiece. Good eye and eat. Good length of neck into nice shoulder placement. Narrow yet of correct depth nice rib and nice short loin. Correct hind angulation. Moved well. Preferred the tail set of 1. Should do well
3rd - Arunmere One In A Million (Mrs S and Mr J Wilks)

This was a lovely class and the depth of quality augers well.
1st - Forest Zpod Chlumskych Haju Glebeheath (Mrs J Guvercin)
I thought this grizzle dog quite lovely. At this young age he is already all of a piece and fairly mature. His overall outline is what I was looking for. On closer inspection he has a very pleasing head of correct proportions. Nice broad skull and correct short yet strong muzzle. Super keen eye and tidy ear size and carriage give him a most lovely expression. Good front assembly with nice forelegs and tight foot. Enough bone. Super topline and tail set. Well ribbed up and easily spannable. Good pelt and the in the best of jackets. This dog comes to his own on the move and whilst the up and down is precise it is the side gait I could watch all day he has super reach in front. Close up for RCC on the day. BP.
2nd - Kewhaigh Innocent Man (Mrs N A Cummins)
Another who really impressed me. Many of the attribute of 1 also apply to Innocent Man although he is not as mature and needs a fraction more time. Quality otter head and lovely strength to muzzle. Good neck. Decent front. Nice bone and feet. Narrow through and well ribbed up. Good hindquarters which are correctly angulated although he can stand himself a little straight on times. Good pelt. Moved well.
3rd - Louajak Thats Amore (Miss C Gwilliam)

1st - Manorcroft True Statesman At Martifers (Mr M & Mrs J Sharp)
Nine month old with many merits. Pleasing typical quality head and expression. Lovely neck and shoulder which is slightly better than 1. Good depth to chest and nice and narrow through the body. Easily spanned. Good topline and tail set. Nice hind quarters. In a decent jacket however would benefit slightly from rolling the coat a little as removing some dead coat would enhance his overall appearance. Lovely on the move with super extension in front and good drive from the rear. In good hard condition.
2nd - Kewhaigh Innocent Man (Mrs N A Cummins)
Second in Minor Puppy

1st - Mysulan Byards Legend (Mrs S J Baxter)
I liked this young dog who impressed on his overall balance and type. He has a very nice headpiece and a lovely expression. Super neck and shoulder. Good bone throughout and not overdone. Correct topline and tail set. Nicely ribbed and easily spannable. Correct hindquarters. Good thick skin and best of jackets. I just thought he was a very honest border, moderate, with little to dislike. In the class he moved ok bit upped his game in the challenge. Was pushed very hard by the minor puppy. RCC
2nd - Botterox Flint (Miss S L Hillman)
Different in type to 1. Nicely headed young dog. Good for overall size. Correct length, topline and tail set. Pleasing hindquarters. Moved well. In lovely jacket. Just preferred the front of the winner.
3rd - Cedarhill The Wish (Mr B. l. & Mrs M. Regeer)
Res - Bluebabel Border Song (Mr K P & Mrs N B Yates)

Not an easy class to sort out.
1st - Torryburn Drummer (Miss J Aldis)
Typical dog who is a moderate and well-made border. Typical head with nice expression. Good neck into well placed shoulders. Good front with narrow but deep chest. Nice bone and decent feet. Easily spanned. Well ribbed and nice short loin. Good set of nice short tail. Racy hindquarters. In decent jacket. Not very settled and not helping his handler, but did enough to annexe the class
2nd - Ravenside Play The Game Kersfell JW (Mrs M Sneddon)
Another rather unsettled. A quality 19 moth old who is well balanced and of good overall proportions. Pleasing head. Good neck and shoulder. Good body with correct racy hindquarters. In need of a new jacket. When he settles he is very correct on the move.
3rd - Raedwulf Moonlight (Mr M & Mrs V Atkinson)

1st - Botterox Chaos (Miss S Hillman)
B/T of lovely type. Pleasing Otter head of correct proportions and with nice eye and good ear size and set. Good strong short muzzle. Good front assembly, well ribbed back and good hind quarters. Can stand himself to look a little too straight in stifle but he is of adequate angulation when you handle him. Nice bone and feet. In one the best of jackets of the whole entry. Moved very soundly fore and aft and pleasing in profile
2nd - Rainsbarrow Elvis (Miss K Rawlinson)
Pleasing head and expression. Head of correct proportions and with decent breadth to the skull. Good shoulder placement. Pleasing topline and good hindquarters. Slightly longer in loin than the winner and preferred the overall balance of 1

1st - Glebeheath Oh Boy JW (Mrs J Guvercin)
This is a quality B/T male headed a good limit class. I liked this dog very much and was in contention for top honours. He presents a very nice silhouette and is good for overall size. He has the best of heads with a super expression. Good keen dark eye. Good neck and good well laid-back shoulders. Correct depth to the chest and of good overall length. String loin. Correct tail set. Lovely racy hindquarters with good strong hard muscle. Decent thickness to the skin and in good well-maintained jacket. Moved with good drive from behind, if I was to be hypercritical I would like a fraction more reach in front. Close up for RCC and in my opinion should attain his crown.
2nd - Etterbern Ace of Wands (Mr L Reynolds & Miss G Adams)
Another quality male who is of excellent make and shape. Very typey male with a pleasing head, good eye and ear. Correct length of neck into nice shoulders/ Good front with enough bone for a male and nice small tight foot. Correct body proportions and correct topline. Moved well in all directions. Just preferred the head and expression of the first dog and wasn’t helping his handler today

Not the easiest of classes as all were of different type. Overall disappointing for an OD class.
1st - CH Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Easily my star of the day and won this class with plenty to spare. I have judged this dog before, indeed at this show a year ago, when he annexed a group 4 under me in a very strong Terrier Group. I wrote of him that time that he is just a lovely dog to go over and is totally balanced. My opinion remains unchanged, this mature male has the most pleasing typical head and his dark keen eye and decent ear size and set combined with his overall proportions and head furnishings gave him the expression I was looking for. Correct depth to his chest and narrow in body, he is well ribbed back with a short strong loin. Correct topline. Lovely thick pelt and in good jacket of correct texture. Correct tail set. Last time I had him I felt he was a little too proud of his tail, today however there was little to fault. Movement was super both fore and aft. It was a pleasure to award him the CC and subsequently BOB. He looked super in the group, annexing Grp 4, although I felt he did well enough to have had higher honours.
2nd - Kevrah Orion Seeking Orangebox (Mr M & Mrs T Anscombe)
Different in type to 1 and a slightly larger dog all over. Nice head of correct proportions. Nice length of neck into best of shoulders. Good body and rib. Nice bone and feet. Correct racy hindquarters and moved well. I just for preference preferred the overall expression of 1
3rd - Sui CH, CH Awbrooksky Never Back Down JW WW23 (Mr R & Miss L Goddard)

1st - Mysulan Going Solo JW VW (Mrs S J Baxter)
B/T who was an easy winner of this class. A very typey border who does in no way look like a veteran. Good head of correct proportions with good ears which are nicely placed. Good neck. Nice front and enough bone for a male. Despite his age his topline is super and he maintains it on the move. Good feet. Nice harsh jacket. Moved very soundly.
2nd - Clydebeck Solitaire VW (Mrs S & Mr M & Miss J Taylor)
Ten years of age and defying it. I thought that this bitch was quite lovely and very good for type. Nicely made throughout. Easily spanned. Good pelt and decent topcoat. Moved very well. Won this class on her head and expression despite a lack of furnishing to help her. Pleased to have had her

2nd - Bluebabel A Good Heart (Mr K P & Mrs N B Yates)
Quality typey bitch with many attributes. Very pleasing head and expression. Good overall shape and well balanced throughout. Nice neck and shoulder. Correct topline and tail set. Pleasing hindquarters. Not quite as positive as 1 going away and in need of a new jacket

1st - Ragatam Daydreamer (Miss T J Peacock)
This young bitch really appealed to me as soon as I saw her on the table. Lovely outline and very balanced. She has a very nice head piece which is very feminine yet without loss of strength. This young lady has a super keen eye and a nice pair of small ears correctly set. Correct length of neck into nicely angulated shoulder placement. Well matured body for her age and is well ribbed back. Good short loin. Correct topline and tail set. Nice tail length and well carried on the move. Lovely bone and feet. Thick pelt covered in a coat of good harsh texture and decent undercoat. Moved very well in all directions and gave the impression she could go all day. I thought she was quite lovely and although I am usually reticent to go down the line for highest honours, she was not to be denied. RCC in good company. I wish her well
2nd - Howthwaite Blithe at Awbrooksky (Mr R & Miss L Goddard)
Different in type to Daydreamer but another very nice promising puppy. Good for size and overall outline. Pleasing head although a fraction longer in muzzle than 1 and just needs to grow some furnishings to enhance her overall expression. Very well made throughout and little to fault. This bitch had one of the thickest skins and harshest coats of the entry which is probably why she lacks a fraction in furnishings at the moment. I think this bitch will do very well with time. Very sound on the move.
3rd - Sweet Dancing Lady (Mrs J Cox)

Quality class
1st - Glebeheath Ophelia (Mrs J Guvercin)
Similar to her kennel mate this is a very mature young border and importantly is in the hardest of conditions. Credit must go to the owner here who has them in A1 condition with. Ophelia is very nice for type and has a very typical head of correct proportions and good dark eye. Nice front assembly and with good bone and feet. Easily spannable she is well ribbed back. Correct topline, decent length to the body and well carried tail. Nice hind quarters with parallel hocks. Moved well and with enthusiasm
2nd - Blackthorn Winter (Miss S Waller)
This bitch really appealed with the loveliest of heads and best of expressions. Another of correct size. Slightly longer cast than1. Well-constructed hind quarters. In decent jacket. Just today was not as animated on the move as the first placed bitch

Pleasing quality bitch who impressed with her overall shape and balance. She has a lovely head with good eye and correct ear. Correct short strong muzzle. Well laid shoulders, nice rib, correct overall length yet with short well-muscled loin. Nice tail and set. Moved well although to be critical she could have a little more drive from behind.
2nd - Otterbobs Beatrix JW (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
This bitch is lovely for overall type and is so sound. Super head and expression. Good length of neck, correct upper arm and shoulder placement. Spannable easily. Narrow and well ribbed. Correct hindquarters. Moved with perfect footfall. Just in total need of a new coat which cost her today

Correct body, which is of good depth but narrow, her ribs are not over sprung and are carried well back. Good hind quarters. Moved very well

1st - CH Dandyhow Pandora (Mrs K Irving)
This bitch headed a nice class of bitches. She is a lovely example of a border and is very feminine yet with no loss of stature or strength. I was drawn to her head and expression which is exactly what I was looking for today. It is of ideal proportions, full of type, has strength but in no way could she be mistaken for anything other than a bitch. Lovely eye and neat small ears. Good length of neck into good shoulders. Nice bone. Correct topline and tail set. She can stand herself a little wide at times but on the move is very correct coming at you. Nice hind quarters. Good pelt and harsh topcoat although I suspect she might be soon for a coat change. A very showy bitch who was not fazed by the weather and moved very well in all directions. Please to award her the CC.
2nd - Ragatam Caol Ila At Baillieswells (Miss T Peacock)
