Firstly I’d like to thank The Border Terrier Club Committee for their very kind invitation to judge this Open show, I felt honoured and privileged . I thoroughly enjoyed my day and the hospitality on offer , the lunch certainly hit the spot..thank you Nancy Hogg. My two stewards, Jane Morton-Shaw and Marina Fleming kept things running smoothly and I am grateful for their support .
To the exhibitors , my thanks go unbounded as I had a lovely selection of good quality dogs to go over and there were certainly some tough decisions in many of the classes. It is an education to finally go over some of the dogs I have admired from the ring side. I am grateful that my decisions were taken, mostly in a sporting manner.
My general findings were , all males were intact , I found no kinked tails ( 1 dog had a bump on the underside of its tail , not a kink in my opinion), jackets were, as usual , at various stages of growth. I was impressed by the fact that all animals before me could be spanned , some a little easier than others.
Once again I feel compelled to comment on the state of nails and feet. In my opinion , many dogs had nails that were too long and some needed drastic fur trimming to enhance the shape of the feet.In my opinion it is a shame to groom your dogs for the ring but forget that ,especially whilst on the table, the judge has a perfect view of any, long nails and/or woolly “ Yeti” feet .

1st - Thornheswin Hellfire In Borderfox (Miss A & Miss E Dixon)
nice grizzle pup . Well proportioned head for a raw baby of 7 months . Ears perhaps a little on the large size but as the skull develops, that should make them more in proportion. Dark Eyes of a good size and shape. Hopefully will develop a little more under jaw strength as he matures. Angles fore and aft good , moved well for one so young . Jacket and pelt good, Liked his length in rib and the complimentary loin . Straight front , standing on well padded feet .His young handler did a good job !
2nd - Cedarhill The Wish (Mr B. l. & Mrs M. Regeer)
another nice pup , a bit younger still at just over 6 months . Lovely head and short muzzle , which jointly house an impressive set of teeth . Again , nice dark eyes well placed and expressive . Slightly shorter coupled than number 1 , but a lot of growing still to do , has a good level underline . Pelt and coat are good , movement was good ,very well presented and shown, lovely to see he was so attentive to his handler. On another day I could easily see the placings reversed.

1st - Billy Boy Mayhem (Mr C Foreman & Miss L Keenan)
A strong puppy, just short of his first birthday , super head and expression , well put together . A little up on the leg , perhaps he has reached his full height . A youngster with plenty of substance , but without any coarseness ..moderate neck into good narrow front . Strong straight Legs and tight feet finished off with lovely thick pads , looks as if he could go all day . Ribbed well back and very fit, strong loin.Good textured jacket and handful of loose pelt . Super topline finished off with a nice full ,short tail … Covered ground effortlessly ….Pleased to award him , not only the class but also Best Dog .
2nd - Mr Blue Boy (Mr D & Ms I Ashton)
(Seen dog from Class 1) 8 month old B&T , ok head , a little finer all over than the first . Muzzle and dentition all ok but could would like to see a bit more fill under the eye…A harsh double coat …a little unsettled on the move but what I saw looked ok.

Lovely strong B&T boy … super head , great width and depth of muzzle …Dark expressive eyes… moderate length of neck into correct shoulders… ribs extend well back and into strong loin…Topline and tailset good… good harsh coat and generous pelt … preferred front angles , hocks were well let down and feet were cat like with with very thick pads … sound on the move ..a lot to like about him…
2nd - Chadbrook Torsten (Miss C Macgregor)
Another nice boy , a little shorter coupled than 1 ….nice head , with good back skull …ear size was great and well set on , falling neatly at the cheek . Great front and shoulder configuration . legs good for bone and straight ….nicely narrow throughout … flat rib and loin sufficient strength … rear angles ok, might benefit from a tad more second thigh … Super harsh jacket ….Held topline stacked and on the move… presented in very good order.

a very well put together grizzle dog , nearly 3 years old… lovely masculine head and expression , dark eyes correct for shape and size … good width of skull and lovely full muzzle with super dentition …. Good front and straight legs …Neck of moderate proportions into shoulder , flat ribs with strong loin …. Nice short carroty tail which comes nicely off the level topline .Crisp jacket and good pelt … Movement was good in all directions.
2nd - Holmelyne Dashby Douglas (Mr D Keens)
(seen dog from previous class ) B&T boy of pleasant proportions ,rather nervous and unsettled, needs more practice to gain some confidence…a little shorter in neck than first … rib and loin ok .. tailset was a little low … jacket and pelt were both good …. Forehand angles were acceptable , a bit difficult to assess his rear assembly as he wasn’t happy to stand still , not surprisingly the movement was a tad erratic , with some more experience and ring craft training I’m sure he will do much better.

Legs were good and straight with sufficient bone , front very nice , narrow and good angles through the shoulder … finished off with tight feet and well developed pads. Lovely flat rib and good accompanying loin … Topline and tail set very good , tail of a good length coming right off the spinal vertebrae . Crisp jacket and pelt to spare . Moves soundly … rear angles not quite as accurate as the front , would like to see a bit more stifle …. Rear feet are perhaps on the slack side but they may tighten up as he matures.

very nice 4 yr old upstanding dog. , another dog that had a lot to like , head and expression good , ears of nice size and well placed, would have liked to see a slightly darker eye . Good for bone , evident in nice front legs , narrow front … Tight feet with excellent thick pads…Ribbed well back and strong loin . Super pin wire jacket , pelt loose and pliable.Held topline standing and on the move .
2nd - Hollexby Travellin Man (Mr P Appleby)
another 4 yr old grizzle similar to 1 but a slightly larger type . Pleasant head with correct proportions of 1/3 muzzle to 2/3 skull , would like to see a little more fill under the eyes , ears nicely set and of good size. Stood a little awkwardly at times which gave the impression that he was a bit upright in his shoulder , however his rear angles were better with a good second thigh . Nice even underline . Generally very well presented with nice texture to his jacket and a loose pelt. Moved well.

very pretty grizzle baby of 7 months… sweet head and expressive dark eyes .. good moderate length of neck , Shoulders ok , at the moment I see a slight tendency for the elbows to be a little angled away from the rib cage, with growth and muscular development that may change. The feet tight and cat like with good deep pads. Topline and tailset good , rear angles ok , movement was good for the age
2nd - Ragatam Adelphi (L Simpson)
another lovely pup, a little taller and rangier than 1st but well constructed . Lovely head for age with expressive eyes , good muzzle and dentition. Angles fore and aft are ok , would like to see a little more development in the stifle and second thigh but that should come over time .. Good flat ribs , going well back , loin as one would expect for one so young . Movement a tiny bit loose but should improve with age.

Many of the same comments would apply to this 10 month old grizzle .. A slightly larger girl but with some of the same attributes , neck maybe a little shorter , front angles good with legs of substance …. Super jacket and pelt plentiful ….Good to see another one with no tuck up … Not quite the tail and tail set of #1 … Movement was good.

One I’ve admired from ringside, nice to get the opportunity to go over her, has terrific breed type and no hint of exaggeration at any point, super head with good jaw depth and a set of teeth to complete the work kit. Eyes dark and expressive,
Legs straight and front narrow . Moderate neck , smooth lines into great shaped shoulders , just the right depth to the brisket and under line. Ribs flat and a good length , strong in loin . Topline and tail set very good . Cracking double coat with lovely texture and a great loose pliable pelt. Tail a lovely short carrot shape coming straight off the back . Rear angles good with a nice turn of stifle … All feet were well shaped and small with thick pads underneath . She moved true in all directions. Best Bitch and B.I.S
2nd - Otterbobs Beatrix (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
another one , of similar age, which I have liked from afar and appreciated the opportunity to go over her. Beautiful feminine head piece with lovely dark eyes . A strong muzzle with good dentition . Elegant neck and smooth transition into the shoulder . Good rib length and compatible loin , there was a new jacket coming through and pelt was plentiful… Top line and tail set were excellent , rear angles good , well let down hocks. Sound in movement. I am pretty sure these two girls will swap places many times in the future .

14 month old grizzle , pleasant head with well placed ears of a good size . Enough length of neck into a slightly heavier shoulder but good flat rib which extended back into a moderate loin . Not much of a jacket but a new one was clearly on its way ! ..rear angles were ok … Tail and topline were good .. Moved well ..
2nd - Foxy Fell At Roseghyll (Mrs A Johnson)
Nearly 5 yrs old… Lovely feminine head and expression with a short muzzle and good teeth , Ears were of a good size and correctly set on the skull… Nice dark eyes ..Was carrying a pretty hefty jacket but neck underneath was ok.The shoulders were a bit on the heavy side , making the front perhaps a little wider than liked .Excellent texture to the pretty full jacket , also a nice loose pelt. Rear angles were a bit too upright meaning that the hocks were not sufficiently let down and therefore movement was a little bit stilted . A super tail and tail set , with the short appendage coming nicely off the back..

quite the little “pocket rocket” this B&T , lovely head and expression with super dark eye …Muzzle with good jaw strength and teeth to match . Lovely straight front and legs fit for purpose ! Decent forechest , to be super picky I’d like to see a little less depth in the brisket . Underline good and fairly level . Topline and tailset good and a nice short tail coming straight off her back .. Rear angles were good , providing a good turn of stifle, which she used to good effect to propel her around the ring … and her tail never stopped wagging !
2nd - Alcumlow Show And Tell At Riseburn (Miss C Tutin)
different type to #1 , more racy in construction , head and expression ok but would have liked a little more fill and substance in her foreface and muzzle. .. neck could have done with a little more length to make a smoother transition into the shoulder .. Legs and front otherwise ok… Good solid cat like feet with deep padding for protection. Rib and loin ok , nice loose pelt. Covered ground well.
