It was an honour to be asked to judge at Paignton & District Fanciers Association. My thanks go to the officers and committee for their kind invitation to judge Border Terriers and their excellent hospitality. I had a lovely day at this well organised show and would like to also thank the stewards, Helen & Norma, for keeping me on track and in order. The weather was exceptionally hot and although I do like to judge outside, I am sure exhibitors, and their dogs were grateful for the shade and cool that being inside gave us.
Although I did not have a huge entry, I was fortunate to have some real quality dogs entered and had some very hard decisions to make, however, at the end of judging I was delighted with my winners. On the downside, I did find some mouths that were not as they should be and some dogs who were deep in chest and therefore difficult to span. However, the most disappointing element was the lack of detail that some exhibitors pay to feet. The standard states that feet should be ‘small with thick pads’, however, quite a few exhibits had untidy feet with long nails. Although this seems minor point, long hair around the feet detracts from the overall look of the Border Terrier.
I was disappointed that I could not stay to watch the group, but unfortunately, I had to leave due to other commitments. I was delighted that all my top winners were shortlisted in the group and very pleased that my Special Beginner winner went Group 1 and the Best Puppy winner went Group 3.

1st - Earthtaw No Way Jose (Ms L Chugg)
A nice type of Border with a good otter head, and correct dentition. He has the correct amount of muscle and was shown in good condition. He has a harsh, correct double coat. Moved ok front and aft, although he wasn’t on his best behaviour for his handler today.
2nd - Grand Boy (Mrs J Cox)
Similar to 1st place in general appearance, which meant it was a close decision. Straight front and correct shoulder placement. Ok movement front and back. Lost out today on coat.

1st - Glebeheath Oh Boy (Mrs J Guvercin)
Lovely, rangy dog with a lot to like about him. Excellent head of correct proportion and attractive dark eye with well-placed ears. He has a good reach of neck, leading to appropriate shoulder placement resulting in a straight front. This youngster has just right amount of bone for his age and is easily spanned. He has a level top line stood, and on the move. He has a well set tail placement, straight off the back. He has an excellent double jacket and thick moveable pelt. Pleased to award him BPIB.
2nd - Dandyhow Postman Pat (Mrs K M Irving)
Another very typey puppy, close decision with 1st place. On a different day I am sure places might be reversed. This young man is not overdone in any way, typical Border Terrier head with correct ear placement, which drop forward to his cheeks. He has a straight front with correct shoulder position. Just right for length and easily spanned. Super harsh tweedy jacket and good pelt. Moved ok

1st - Cobstoneway Stand By Me JW (Mrs G Stevens)
A workmanlike dog, shown in hard, fit condition. Lovely otter head and a keen varminty expression. Lovely reach of neck, flowing into smooth, well laid back shoulder placement. Narrow throughout with strong loin. Well-muscled hind quarters and good tail set. Excellent, harsh double jacket. Moved out well, keeping a level topline moving around the ring.
2nd - Earthtaw Never A Dull Moment (Miss J Haydon)
A slightly bigger dog with a good head and decent front. Still a little immature for body and muscle which I am sure will develop with age. Good rear movement. Coat just coming through.

Good reach of neck, flowing into smooth well placed shoulders. Well-shaped body, flat ribs and easily spanned and a good strong loin and good bend of stifle. Shown in good, harsh coat and thick flexible pelt and stood on small, well padded feet. Pushed hard in the challenge, was unlucky to meet the winners in Open Dog.

Another very nice, typey Border Terrier. He has similar qualities to 1st place but is lighter in bone and narrower and pleasing to go over. His head is a little more refined than 1. He has lovely body lines and is well muscled. Good fore and hindquarters he moved out well.

There was a lot of quality in this class, which made decisions difficult. On another day 1st and 2nd could easily change places.
1st - CH Otterbobs Tolson (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Super looking, eye catching dog, shown in tip top condition and up on his toes. He moved with self-assured confidence like he owned the show ring. Lovely head with correct two thirds, one third proportion and keen expression. He has a correct scissor bite and excellent big teeth. Good length of neck which leads into well placed shoulders. He has a straight front and firm pastons. He is easily spanned, has good length of back, well-muscled hindquarters and a good bend of stifle. He stood on small, tight, neat feet with thick pads. Moved out well fore and aft. Very pleased to award him DCC and BoB.
2nd - CH Thistlestone Glenfiddich (Mr S Whisker & Miss J May)
Another good example of what a Border Terrier should look like. Very unlucky to meet 1st place today. A narrow, typey, smart looking dog who is not over done or exaggerated in any way. He is well balanced, with a good otter head, dark eye with an alert expression and correct ear placement. Good reach of neck, smooth shoulders, and a narrow straight front. He has just the correct amount of bone and muscle and was shown in a good tweedy double coat. Moved out well fore and aft. Well deserved RCC.

A very smart, fit dog with a super otter head and very typical varminty expression. He has a strong muzzle, and his head is of correct proportion. Lovely length of neck, leading into well placed, smooth shoulders and straight front. He is still narrow throughout and plenty of strength of loin. Good angulation of hind quarters allowed him to move with drive around the ring. Lovely in profile and finished off with the very best of harsh double coats. BV.

Another nice dog to judge, in excellent order for his age. Good head, keen dark eye and expression, correctly placed ears. Good length of neck, good shoulders, and straight front. Just right for bone and still easily spannable. Moved out well. Shown in full coat today.

1st - Benattivo Silver Flame (Mrs S J & Mr C P Girling)
An eye catching blue and tan bitch, who I have admired from outside the ring. I loved this girl for type as she walked into the ring, and she didn’t disappoint as I went over her. A well balanced bitch with the best of otter heads, which is correctly proportioned. She is well filled under the eye, has a strong muzzle and jaw, with a correct bite with big teeth. She has a good reach of neck, correctly placed, smooth shoulders, a straight front and stood on small tidy, neat feet. Ribs carried well back into a strong loin and excellent tail set. She is easily spanned. Shown in a super dense, double coat and has a thick, pliable pelt. With a good bend of stifle, she moved around the ring with purpose and drive. Pleased to award her first BCC.

A lovely type, bitch, feminine throughout. Moderate breadth of skull. Correct ear placement and lovely dark eye and typical expression. Well balanced with good length of neck, firm level topline and correct tail set. Good straight front on small, thick padded feet. Plenty muscle in hindquarters with good angulation ensured she moved out well with confidence. In her underwear today but has evidence of a harsh coat
2nd - Onthill Alberta Rock (Mrs S Waller)
Another nice bitch with a good typey head. Lovely reach of neck and a good front and shoulder placement. Moderately muscled up body, spannable rib. Moved out ok. Good double coat.

1st - Overcompton Cupid At Badgerbeck (Miss L M Jenkins)
A very workman like grizzle bitch, shown in very good condition. She has a strong, but feminine head, a proper border expression and correct length of muzzle with large white teeth set square in her mouth. Straight front with correct shoulder placement, she has just the right amount of bone and muscle. Dense undercoat and an excellent grizzle pin wire top coat. Moved out well around the ring which all added to the picture of an ‘essentially Working Terrier.’
2nd - Clydebeck Tanzanite (Mrs S & Mr M & Miss J Taylor)
A good and honest border terrier bitch that was presented well in the show ring. Her head is a lovely example of an otter head with correctly placed ears and dark eye. Straight front and well laid back shoulders, level topline stood and on the move. A finer built bitch than the 1st place but with a good amount of muscle. Shown in a good double coat, she moved well fore and aft.

A well put together grizzle bitch, shown in tiptop condition, excellent double coat and not overdone in anyway. Typical otter head, with broad skull, correct length of muzzle and an excellent scissor bite with large white teeth. She has lovely dark eyes and a keen expression which shows her character. She has a good reach of neck, well placed shoulders, narrow straight front and stands on small, tight feet with thick pads. Moved with drive and purpose around the ring. Pushed hard in the challenge, close decision with Junior Bitch winner and I was pleased to award her RBCC.
2nd - Tarkaswell Sea The Stars (Mrs C E Sansom)
Unlucky to meet 1st place today. She is a nice, typical border bitch, shown in good order, slightly more refined than 1st. Very feminine head and lovely expression with dark eye. She has a straight front and smooth shoulders. Good amount of muscle and lovely bodylines in profile. Coat just coming to its best, so not quite the amount of the class winner today. Moved and showed well
