A thoroughly enjoyable day and my thanks go to the officers and committee for their kind invitation to judge their well-run Open Show. I was delighted with the excellent entry and what a pleasure it was to spend a day with the Borders and their owners. There were some well-filled classes which gave me lots to think about and some decisions were extremely close. A lovely atmosphere prevailed and applause for the winners was consistent throughout.

1st - Stineval Lambert (Mr A & Mrs C Horner)
Approaching 8 months this youngster got the day off to a really good start. I thought him most promising and he greatly appealed for overall type and balance. Muscular neck of moderate length, firm topline, ribbed well back, muscular loin, good underline and tail just right for length, set and carriage. Masculine head with moderate breadth of skull, dark expressive eyes set well apart, ears of correct set, strong muzzle of correct length and excellent dentition. He has good angles both front and rear, stands nice and straight in front on good feet and is well muscled all through. Rib developing well for age and not over-sprung. Harsh jacket with dense undercoat and nice thick pelt. Moving freely with good carriage and very well handled. Later in the dog challenge he matched the Best Dog winner for outline and balance and was awarded Reserve Best Dog and subsequently Best Puppy in Show.

1st - Ravenside Run To Me (Mr G Grassie)
This 9 mth lad was a comfortable winner in this class. He pleased for outline with clean neck of moderate length, correct topline, ribcage extending well back and easily spanned, strong loin and tail of good set and carriage. Skull of moderate breadth, dark expressive eyes, ears of correct set and good dentition, however I would like to see a slightly shorter muzzle. Pleasing angles front and rear, straight forelegs with clean shoulders, standing on excellent feet and nicely muscled. Pretty good coat texture and nice thick pelt. Moved well on the go around, straight when going away but needs to tighten in front.
2nd - Kentwone Monstro (Mrs J Blakey)
11 mth old who was heavier all through than the winner. Firm topline, good length to ribcage, strong loin and tail pleasing for both set and carriage. Nice dark eyes which are set well apart, strong muzzle of correct length to balance head and good dentition. Standing nice and straight in front but with more breadth of chest than I would prefer. Moving true both fore and aft but could extend more on the go around and overall could not match action of winner. Pleasing texture to jacket.

1st - The Joker Let's Rock and Roll to Fevstone (Mrs D Bullen)
Two very different dogs competed in this class with the winner being this 15 mth old who won with some room to spare. He pleased for type and presented a nicely balanced outline with muscular neck of moderate length, firm topline, spanned easily with correct ribbing although a fraction longer in loin. Tail of good set and carriage. Masculine head and expression with skull of moderate breadth, nice dark eye, correct stop but a tad longer in muzzle than the ideal. Nicely angulated, standing straight in front on good feet and firm, well-muscled hindquarters. Moving well all through with good carriage. Pretty good texture to jacket and good pelt.
2nd - Achouffe Fens Stalker (Miss L J Hammersley)
13 mth old chap with a super temperament. Neck of moderate length, firm topline, good length to ribcage and muscular loin but tail carried a tad higher than preferred. Moderate breadth to skull, dark expressive eyes, correct stop, short strong muzzle and scissor bite. He stands nice and straight in front on good feet but with a little more breadth than the ideal and this reflects on the move. Angles could not match those of winner and therefore he was somewhat restricted on the go around. Nice thick pelt and decent texture to jacket. Very well handled.

1st - Picer Archibald Findley (C Boyd)
2 yr old blue/tan who was not making the most of himself but he pleased for type and presented a nicely balanced outline with good neck, firm topline, acceptable length to ribcage, strong loin and tail of good carriage. Skull of moderate breadth, nice dark eyes, ears of correct set and good dentition. Muzzle a little longer than preferred. Standing nice and straight in front with correct breadth of chest and therefore easily spanned. Pads could be thicker. Moving out well in profile, where he scored over second, and true when going away.

1st - Beaconpike Dionysus (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
19 mth old who particularly appealed and was so good to go over. He presented such a well balanced outline with excellent neck, firm topline, deep narrow chest with ribs extending well back, good underline, muscular loin and thick tail of correct set and carriage. Soundly constructed all through, standing nice and straight in front on super feet and firm, well-muscled hindquarters with well let down hocks. Moderate breadth to skull, dark expressive eyes which are set well apart, ears of correct set and strong muzzle although a fraction longer. Harsh jacket with dense undercoat and good pelt. Moving true on the down and back and with excellent profile action and carriage. Well handled.
2nd - Howthwaite Sylvester (Mr P Armstrong)
2 yr old of different type to the winner and out of a slightly bigger mould but he still pleased. Muscular neck of moderate length, correct topline, good length to ribcage, firm loin and tail good for both set and carriage. Masculine head and expression with moderate breadth to skull, good eye for colour but a tad larger, ears of correct set, short strong muzzle and correct dentition. Pleasing angulation, straight forelegs with correct breadth to chest, good feet and firm, muscular rear. Gaiting nicely on the go around but could not quite match the action of winner. Jacket of good texture and thick pelt. Another well handled.

1st - Tyneotter Sun Stands Still (Mrs N Anderson & Mrs A Howard)
I was presented with a variety of different types in this class with my winner being this 22 mth old. He greatly appealed and scored in outline with neck of moderate length, correct topline, good ribbing which is carried well back, strong loin and tail correct for both set and carriage. Quality headpiece with lovely expression; skull of moderate breadth, dark eyes which are placed well apart, correct ear set, ideal skull to muzzle proportions and good dentition. Good angles front and rear, standing straight in front on correct feet with nice thick pads and well-muscled all through. Moving well in profile with good carriage and true when going away. Harsh jacket with good undercoat and thick pelt.
2nd - Raedwulf Alchemy at Vandamere (Miss J Singh)
18 mth old of completely different type to the winner. He was lovely to go over being presented in such good condition and well-muscled throughout. Muscular neck of moderate length, firm topline, good length to ribcage which is easily spanned, strong loin, good underline and tail of correct set and carriage. Head with good proportions, dark expressive eyes, ears of correct set and good mouth but would just like a little more fill below the eye. Nicely angulated front and rear, standing straight in front with correct width to chest, excellent feet and well let down hocks. Moving out well in profile and true when going away. Harsh jacket and good pelt.

yr old of excellent type and presenting a lovely balanced outline with excellent neck, firm topline, first class ribbing which is easily spanned, muscular loin, good underline and thick tail of good set, length and carriage. Super headed lad with correct proportions, moderate breadth of skull, dark expressive eyes which are placed well apart, dark ears of correct set, strong muzzle and correct dentition. Good layback of shoulder, straight forelegs and firm, muscular hindquarters with well let down hocks. Pads could be a tad thicker but nothing untoward. Moving freely all through with good length of stride and using himself as he goes. Quality jacket with harsh topcoat and nice dense undercoat and presented in super nick. Thick pelt. Super temperament. Best Dog & Best in Show.
2nd - Lynsett Lewis (Mr P Armstrong)
5 yr old blue/tan who differs in type to the winner and is a tad bigger all round but with so much to like and good to go over. Moderate length of neck, good topline, ribs carried well back, muscular loin and tail just right for set and carriage. Masculine head and expression with good skull to muzzle proportions, dark eyes set well apart and good dentition. He stands nice and straight in front on excellent feet with correct width to chest and is firm behind with well let down hocks. Moving soundly but winner had the edge on the go around. Harsh jacket and good pelt, shown in firm hard condition and handled to advantage.

1st - Thornheswin Northern Lass (Mr J C Dixon)
7 mth old who appealed for type and presented a pleasing outline with neck of good length to balance, correct topline, well ribbed back, strong loin and thick tail which is good for length, set and carriage. Feminine headpiece with moderate breadth to skull, dark expressive eyes, ears of correct set, short strong muzzle and scissor bite. She stands on very good feet although would like to see little more layback of shoulder. Firm rear with well let down hocks. Moving well on the go around, true when going away and ok when coming towards. Jacket of good texture with dense undercoat and nice thick pelt.
2nd - Ravenside Despacito (Mr M Lowry)
This 6 mth old was very close up to the winner but she needs to firm up in topline and therefore overall outline saw her placed second here. I thought her a lovely type and she is most promising. Neck of moderate length, good length to ribcage with ribbing developing well for age and tail correct for set and carriage. Most attractive head and expression with good skull to muzzle proportions, excellent eye and ear and correct dentition. Nicely angulated front and rear, straight forelegs, pretty good feet and well let down hocks. Harsh jacket and nice thick pelt. Moving very well in profile and well handled.
3rd - Carrickfarm Myra (Mrs M Armstrong)

1st - Northborders Chianti (Mrs J A Fletcher)
Two blue/tans challenged here with this 10 mth old winning with some room to spare. Clean-cut throughout she presented a beautifully balanced outline with moderate length of neck, firm straight back, good length to ribcage, strong loin, good underline and tail just right for set and carriage. Well proportioned, feminine head with moderate breadth to skull, super eye and ear and correct dentition. Sound all through with correct angles front and rear, nice straight forelegs and standing on thick pads. Moving freely with good carriage. Jacket of good texture with dense undercoat and thick pelt. Super showgirl who was so very well handled. Best Puppy Bitch & Reserve Best Puppy in Show.
2nd - Havencroft Emerald (Mrs N A Cummins)
This 11 mth old pup is a different type to the winner and a tad heavier all through but having said that she is certainly not oversprung. Neck of moderate length, firm topline, sufficient length to ribcage, good underline and tail set on ok. Lovely head and expression with moderately broad skull, dark eyes which are placed well apart, good ear set, strong muzzle of correct length to balance and scissor bite. Standing nice and straight in front on good feet. Movement could not match that of winner and in particular she needs to firm up behind. One who needs more time.

1st - Picer Bess Pool (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
16 mth old who particularly appealed for overall type and balance and she was so good to go over. Muscular neck of moderate length, firm straight back, ribs carried well back and easily spanned, strong loin and lovely thick tail of correct length. Quality head with super expression; moderately broad skull, the very best of eyes, ears good for size and set, strong muzzle of correct length and scissor bite. Well made all through with nice straight forelegs, small feet with thick pads and firm, muscular hindquarters with well let down hocks. Jacket of excellent texture with dense undercoat and thick pelt. Moving true with good tail carriage. Reserve Best Bitch.
2nd - Staynorwood Ramona (Mr G & Mrs C Richardson)
This 13 mth old is another who pleased for type, feminine throughout and smaller all round than the winner. She too is nicely balanced with moderate length of neck, correct topline, excellent ribbing, muscular loin and tail set and carried well. Head of good proportions with nice breadth to skull, lovely eye and ear, short strong muzzle and correct dentition. She stands well naturally on good feet with correct width to chest. Moving out nicely on the go around but front action could not match that of winner. Harsh jacket and good thickness to pelt.

1st - Foxwater Miss Adventure At Dejurra (Mrs A E Pitt)
3 yr old who scored in this class on overall type. Moderate length of neck, good topline, ribbed well back, firm loin and tail set and carried well. Feminine head and expression with pleasing skull, ears of correct set and eyes of good colour although I would like a tad more fill below. She has good angles both ends but stands with more width in front than would prefer. Jacket could use more texture but pelt is thick enough.
2nd - Lynsett Miss Mable At Sharrale (Mrs D & Mr J Bowman)
2 yr old blue/tan of completely different type to winner. Neck of moderate length, correct topline, ribs carried well back, good loin and tail good for both set and carriage. She has a nice dark eye and good dentition but her right ear flies somewhat and I felt she was rather lacking in expression. Moving well in profile but could be more positive when coming towards. Feet could also be better. Pretty good thickness to pelt. Well handled.

Attractive head with feminine expression; moderately broad skull, dark eyes placed well apart, ears of correct size and set, short strong muzzle and good dentition. There were some nice bitches present in this class with the winner being this 20 mth old girl who was so very well handled. Feminine throughout she is so well balanced with excellent neck, firm straight topline, good length to ribcage which is easily spanned, strong loin and tail correct for set and carriage. Feminine headpiece with moderate breadth to skull, excellent eye, ears of correct set, good stop, short strong muzzle and scissor bite. 2nd - Beaconpike Solstice (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
This 19 mth old is another of quality and she was so good to go over given her correct construction. She could make more of herself and unfortunately came up against the winner who is a real showgirl. She presented a nicely balanced outline with moderate length of neck, correct topline, well ribbed back, firm loin and tail set and carried correctly. Quality head with keen expression; skull of moderate breadth, excellent eye and ear, strong muzzle of correct length to balance and good dentition. Shoulders well laid, straight forelegs with correct breadth of chest, very good feet and well muscled hindquarters with pleasing turn of stifle. Harsh jacket with dense undercoat. 1st - Howthwaite's Resolution (Mr R J & Mrs E A Barrett)
Another lovely class with a number of quality bitches although quite varied in type. I selected this 2 yr old as my winner and I thought her something really special and she was a delight to go over. The ultimate showgirl, she presented a beautiful outline with muscular neck of moderate length, firm straight back, first class ribbing, strong loin and tail of correct set and carriage. Feminine head and expression with moderate breadth of skull, lovely dark eye, ears of correct set, strong muzzle and correct scissor bite. Faultless construction with good angles front and rear, straight forelegs with correct width to chest, standing on the best of feet and well-muscled throughout. Moving true on the down and back and with good length of stride on the go around. Best Bitch & Reserve Best in Show. Very close up to the Best Dog in the final challenge, coat being the deciding factor.
2nd - Picer Isabel Derby (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
This 2 yr old is really quite different to the winner but another who greatly appealed. Such a good type and so very well balanced with muscular neck, firm topline, good length to ribcage and easily spanned, strong loin and thick tail good for length, set and carriage. Quality headpiece with good skull to muzzle proportions, excellent eye and ear and correct dentition. Pleasing angulation, standing straight in front on small compact feet with thick pads, correct breadth of chest and muscular hindquarters with well let down hocks. Moving so well on the go around, nice and straight when coming towards but rear action not that of winner. Super harsh jacket with dense undercoat and nice thick pelt.

1st - Picer Martha Logen (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
4 yr old who I felt won this class with ease. Not making the best of herself but even so her quality was clearly evident. Feminine throughout, I thought her so good for type and she was lovely to go over. Neck of correct length to balance, straight topline, ribs extend well back, firm muscular loin and thick, moderately short tail which is good for both set and carriage. Moderately broad skull, dark expressive eyes, decent ears, short strong muzzle and scissor bite. Well laid shoulders, straight forelegs, super feet and firm, muscular hindquarters with good turn of stifle. Moving well all through. Excellent jacket and pelt.
2nd - Goldenmill Illusion at Vandamere (Miss J Singh)
This 2 yr old is a completely different type to the winner being somewhat racier and with more daylight beneath her. Another who was good to go over and presented with such good muscle-tone. Muscular neck, firm topline, excellent rib, strong loin and tail good for set and carriage. Feminine head but much preferred expression of winner; skull of moderate breadth, nice dark eye and scissor bite. Soundly built with clean, well laid shoulders, straight forelegs with correct width in front, small feet with nice thick pads and firm hindquarters with well let down hocks. Moving true with good carriage. Jacket of good texture.

A somewhat varied class which saw this 10 yr old bitch come out on top. Soundly constructed girl who was pleasing to go over. She scored in this class in outline with sufficient length of neck, correct topline, good length to ribcage, muscular loin and tail correct for set and carriage. Feminine head and expression with good proportions, nice eye and ear and good dentition. Standing nice and straight in front on decent feet and firm rear with nice turn of stifle. 7 yr old bitch of completely different type to the winner. Neck of moderate length, firm topline, correct ribbing, strong loin and tail of good set. Not quite coat texture or pelt of winner. Well handled.
