Thank you to the committee of Birmingham Dog Show Society for inviting me to judge Border Terriers at their show. Many thanks to all the exhibitors who entered and gave me the honour and pleasure of judging their dogs. I had a fabulous entry and was truly spoilt for choice in many of the classes. One general observation is that there were quite a number of dogs that were, in my opinion, simply too big to do the job that they are bred to do.

Blue & tan with lovely head and nice dark eye. In good coat with correct texture and colour. Looked deep in profile but was spannable. Correct topline and nice length of ribs carried well back. Good thick moderately long tail.
2nd - Foxwater Captain Scarlet (Mrs J Spence)
8-month grizzle & tan puppy with pleasing head. Deep enough for his age and hopefully won’t grow on much more. In good harsh coat and has a nice length of rib.

1st - Ragatam Eros (Mr M F Gooding & Mrs J Yates)
Grizzle and tan pup of 7 months with good narrow straight front. Long legs but overall has a lovely outline and well-angulated. Nice level topline. Excellent bite and large teeth with a strong muzzle. In harsh good coat and with a lovely thick pelt. Used long legs to cover the ground with ease.
2nd - Awbrooksky Never Back Down (Mr R & Miss L Goddard)
Dark grizzle and tan, also 7 months old, but smaller and finer boned than the winner. Also in excellent coat with acceptable thickness of pelt just not as good as the winner. Good mouth and correct bite. Found him “petite” for his age, may fill out as he matures. He was pretty in head with a sweet expression.

11 month pup, light grizzle & tan, quite tall with overall length to match perfectly, narrow and spannable. Would have preferred a little less length on the tail. Good angulation and moved with drive, excellent coat and a thick pelt.
2nd - The Joker Let's Rock and Roll to Fevstone (Mrs D Bullen)
9 month pup, light grizzle with dark ears correctly set and close to cheek. Preferred the head and type of 1. Unfortunately shown without any jacket. Up to size and hopefully he has finished growing. He was in proportion and looked good in profile. Showed and stepped out well.

Grizzle and tan youngster in perfect harsh coat. Presented beautifully.
Lovely typical head. Correct size. Straight narrow front, he was the best mover of the class. Lovely dark eye and typical otter head. Really liked this one and was considered for top honours in my line up. I think his day will come.
2nd - Ycart In with Hounds (Mr K K & Mrs T J Fraser & Butler)
Another quality youngster who caught my eye, longer in leg than 1 but I was able to span him. Good length of rib. Lovely flat skull and pleasing otter head. Coat still coming through and unlucky to meet 1. Good angulation and moved well. Shows promise and one I shall watch out for.

1st - Mansergh History of Art (Miss D Wills)
Another super young dog. This dark grizzle & tan has an excellent harsh double coat. Easily spanned and of correct weight with a straight narrow front. Not over-done in any way. Loved his size and narrowness throughout. Good reach of neck flowing into correct shoulders. Good topline and has lovely ribs carried well back. Moved well, probably a result of being built correctly
2nd - Kevrah Orion Seeking Orangebox (Mr M & Mrs T Anscombe)
Dark grizzle and tan with strong head and nice flat skull. Nice eye and good strong jaw with correct mouth. Good topline and nice length of body although his tail could be little shorter. In great coat but I found him rather deep and a bit big for me.

Grizzle and tan of correct size. Pleasant head and nice dark eye. His coat was past its best. Body was of good length and narrow, seemed a little unsettled for his handler today.
2nd - Keebank Double Up (Mrs D Rogers)
Nice overall shape to this youngster who is still in puppy. In good coat with small, neat feet. Balanced outline with nice carrot-shaped tail. Needs more time to mature.

Excellent dark grizzle & tan in harsh, wire coat. He was of correct size and weight. Loved his beautiful otter head and expression. His dark muzzle, eyes and ears giving him an attractive typical head. Nicely proportioned with good ribs carried well back. No exaggerations in this dog, he has good length of neck flowing to a level topline which he maintained as he moved. Moved soundly when viewed from front and back.
2nd - Glen Mara Oh Viedo At Kersfell JW (Mrs M Sneddon)
Light grizzle in full coat, which I would have preferred to be of harsher texture. Excellent size and was easily spannable. Pleasing head and expression with lovely dark eye. Narrow and nice length with racy hindquarters and small, neat feet. Moved well.

1st - CH Yorkpiece Fiery Lucifer (Mrs J L Lee)
CC and BOB Beautifully presented blue & tan in excellent condition – here was the ultimate showman -he never stopped showing. Moved with drive and purpose round the ring and carried his tail correctly. His coat was harsh, of true blue colour and there was plenty of thick pelt. Small neatest of feet, groomed perfectly. Correct size and weight, and nicely angulated. Worthy winner.
2nd - Brumberhill Backatcha (Mr S A Mcpherson)
Another beautiful dog who was also presented in top condition. Pushed the winner hard in this class. Stunning head and in excellent coat, he was also groomed to perfection. So much to like about him – narrow, straight front; balanced throughout with good length of body and racy hindquarters. Also had neat, tight feet that so many lack. Loved his size and type – a true Border throughout.

Light grizzle and tan dog of almost 8 years, with a harsh coat which was not fully through. Nice dark ears correctly set and a good otter head with strong muzzle. He was of correct size and weight. Stepped out with purpose that belied his years.
2nd - Cedarhill Stargazer JW ShCM (Miss A Speake & Mr H S Speake)
Pleasing grizzle and tan 9-year-old in fine harsh jacket. Good angulation but didn’t move as well as the winner and was carrying a little too much weight today.

2nd - Picer Bess Pool (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)

Nice bitch in excellent harsh coat and plenty of thick pelt. Pleasing head with correct dark eyes and ears. Lovely rib and good topline flowing into correct tail set.Tail thick and carrot shaped, just a bit longer than I prefer and spoils her otherwise good profile.
2nd - Ycart In To Deep (Mr K K & Mrs T J Fraser & Butler)
Nice type with pleasing typical head. This blue and tan was in lovely coat with plenty of ticking which, to me, makes her the correct blue colour. Slightly longer in leg than 1 but nicely proportioned. Loved her thick pelt and was spannable and correct size. Good angulation and nice length of body flowing into a better tail than the winner.

Lovely feminine B&T bitch, so sound and beautifully proportioned. Everything about this one was quality. Loved her stunning head, feminine and correct – strong jaw, good dentition. Narrow throughout with a straight front and ribs carried well back. Easily spanned. Moved with drive and flowed round the ring. Delighted to award her the BCC, her first, I believe.
2nd - Southash Lavender Blue At Oatberry (Mrs K Tuffin)
Another blue & tan, not the same type but also lots to like about her. These 2 exhibits are not what you expect to find in a Novice class but then Covid came along and spoiled everyone’s fun. Lots to like about this one too. Gorgeous blue coat of correct texture. Deeper in body but had a good length of rib and had a lovely profile. Also moved well but not as much drive when viewed in profile as the winner.

I really liked this light grizzle bitch who was in great coat and condition and was seriously considered for top honours. Won this large, quality class with ease. Nicely proportioned throughout with no exaggerations with a good harsh coat. She was of correct size (weight) and moved soundly.
2nd - Hawcoat Patience (Mrs E J & Miss R C Larner)
Also in excellent harsh coat and with good thick pelt. Lovely otter head, although I would prefer a little less face furnishing as this gave her a more masculine look. Moved ok. Preferred the profile and balance of the winner.

1st - Beaconpike River Sky (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
Pleasing grizzle & tan with nice head and good front. Straight and narrow and good reach of neck. Coat just about through but evidence of correct texture and the pelt was thick enough. Could do with a little more angulation behind. Moved well.
2nd - Ycart Hunts Bays N Stays (Mr K K & Mrs T J Fraser & Butler)
This one was short of coat and that probably cost her the class because in other respects she is a really nice bitch. Lovely to go over – light in weight (and colour), I liked her length and type. Covered the ground well when she moved.

2nd - CH Nantcoch Ffion JW ShCM (Mrs J M Phillips)
A little older, this 10-year-old starting to show a little grey but still looking good for her age. She showed well and was in fine coat with a good pelt. Nice balanced and proportions, stepped out as though she was still enjoying her show career.
