I would like to thank the committee for giving me the honour of judging at this lovely show, and for the warm welcome and hospitality shown on the day. Special thanks go to the Show Secretary Kathy Wilkinson, my two efficient stewards Liz Barrett and Judy Carr, and Carol Mackenzie for a lovely lunch. Most of all I would like to say a very big thank you to all the exhibitors for giving me such a lovely entry, and for allowing me the privilege of going over their dogs. The depth of quality in some classes, particularly the bitches, meant that I truly wished for more top places to give out. However, I was very pleased with my main winners, who all looked as though they could manage a day’s work. Most exhibits were in hard, fit condition and well turned out. All dogs were entire, I found just a couple of kinked tails, and, understandably, there were a few missing/misplaced teeth in the veteran class. Coats were at various stages, as to be expected, and this had to affect a few places as it is not only a necessity on a working terrier, but completes the picture. I was pleased to have some very promising puppies, and at the other end of the scale a wonderful class of veterans.

1st - Ridgebow Two Hoots (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
Eight and a half month old grizzle and tan dog, who I loved for size and type. He has a good masculine head with flat skull, very little stop, strong jaw and big teeth in a perfect scissor bite. He is narrow throughout, easily spanned, has a straight front, well constructed narrow shoulders, and is ribbed well back. He has a correct double coat with loose pelt and harsh topcoat, and stands on neat, well padded feet. Good angulation fore and aft allowed him to move well for one so young, with plenty of confidence and enthusiasm. Stood alone but a very worthy winner. Best Puppy Dog

Two grizzle and tan litter brothers of almost 9 months, and very similar in size and type.
1st - Brackenfell Rock The Boat For Vandamere (Mr S Pollit)
Lovely ottery head of correct proportions and with strong muzzle and jaw. He has a straight, narrow front, plenty of bone and neat feet. He is ribbed well back and spannable, and has a thick, loose pelt but was short of topcoat on the day. Moved well.
2nd - Brackenfell Born To Be Alive (Mr I Single)
All the same comments apply, I just felt that he wasn’t so settled in movement on the day.

1st - Otterpaws Mountain High (Mr & Mrs G Birrell)
One year old grizzle and tan dog who is just right for size and spans easily. He has a lovely head with a short, broad muzzle and strong jaw, good bite and keen, dark eye. Good angulation all round enabling him to move accurately around the ring. He holds a level topline and has a short, carrot shaped tail, correct double coat and loose, pliable pelt.
2nd - Ravenside Chabadabada (Mr L Maclagan)
Slightly younger grizzle and tan dog at ten months, to whom similar remarks apply, but not quite the strength of muzzle as 1. He has a good harsh topcoat, loose pelt, is spannable and stands on neat feet. Moved well.
3rd - Remony For A' That (Mrs A E Gregory)

Was Res in Junior Dog. 1 year old grizzle and tan with a very good head, broad muzzle and correct bite with strong teeth. He has a straight front, the correct amount of bone, and is spannable, being bigger than 1 but understandably as he is older. He has a very harsh topcoat and thick, pliable pelt, good angulation front and rear, and moved ok.

1st - Lynsett Lewis (Mr P Armstrong)
A blue and tan of good overall balance and size, who comes to hand well. He has a correct head with a keen expression, and moderate neck flowing into correct shoulders. He has narrow ribs carried well back and is strong in the loin with a level topline and well set on carrot shaped tail. His correct double coat covers a loose pliable pelt, and he moved ok but I would have just liked a little more drive from the rear.
2nd - Otterpaws Muninn (Mr & Mrs G Birrel)
Grizzle and tan who is narrow throughout and spannable, ribbed well back, and has good angulation front and rear. He moves accurately holding a level topline with a good tailset, but is just a little short of coat today.
3rd - Glenbucket Whisky Mac (Mrs A Howard)
Res - Westbound Dan (Mr D Hill)
VHC - Tyneaster Undercover Agent For Vandamere JW (Mr S Pollit)

1st - Cedarhill Ghost Writer JW (Mrs M Fleming)
Handsome grizzle and tan who excels for size and breed type. He has a lovely masculine head and varminty expression, with strong jaw and teeth in a correct scissor bite. He has a good reach of neck into well laid back, narrow shoulders, is easily spanned, and has a straight front with just the correct amount of bone. He is well angulated front and rear, holds a good topline with correct tailset, and moves accurately to cover the ground with ease. He has a thick, pliable pelt and was shown in an excellent, harsh topcoat, and pushed very hard for top honours.
2nd - Glenbucket Highland Lad (Mrs N Anderson)
Another lovely grizzle and tan boy, slightly taller and longer in body than 1st, but very narrow and spannable. Good head with broad muzzle, strong jaws and correct dentition. He has a good length of neck into well laid back shoulders, nice angulation, and moved well.

1st - Raleniro Second Time Around ShCM (Mr M J & Mrs D A Lorraine & Miss P Thomas)
This good looking grizzle and tan boy caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring, and didn’t disappoint. He has a lovely, ottery , masculine head with a broad muzzle and strong jaw containing big teeth in a good scissor bite. His front is straight and narrow, he has the right amount of bone, and stands on neat, well padded feet. His shoulders are well constructed and his ribs are narrow and carried well back. I thought initially that he looked slightly deep in the brisket, but with hands on it turned out to be long hair and he actually spanned well. He has good angulation front and rear, with a good length of upper arm and well constructed, well muscled hind quarters giving him the required reach and drive to move economically and follow a horse all day. He has a loose, thick, pliable pelt, adequate undercoat and harsh new topcoat, and holds a level topline with good tailset. He moved accurately but perhaps just lacked a little enthusiasm whilst challenging for top honours. Nevertheless, I was happy to award him Best Dog.
2nd - Lairehope Duke Diamante (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)
This workmanlike, very masculine grizzle and tan dog was shown in wonderfully thick, full coat and really looked the picture, pushing hard for 1st place. He has an excellent thick, loose pelt, good ottery head with strong jaw and correct bite, nice shoulders and good angulation all round. He is strong in the loin and has well muscled hind quarters and a good topline and tailset. A steady mover, and well deserving of Reserve Best Dog.

Three promising puppies.
1st - Otterbobs Duchess (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
Lovely 7 month old grizzle and tan girl with everything in the right place, and I liked her very much. She has a lovely head with strong jaw and good bite, and is very narrow throughout, easily spanned, and ribbed well back. She has a straight, narrow front, adequate bone, and stands on neat feet, and has a good double coat with loose pelt. She has sturdy, nicely angulated hind quarters giving plenty of drive, but just needs to tighten up a little in front, which is where she lost out to an older, more mature puppy later.
2nd - Thornheswin Thats My Girl (Mr J C Dixon)
Just a baby at 6 months, and very similar remarks apply. Another well made puppy, very slightly bigger than 1st but not much in it.
3rd - Beaconpike River Sky (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)

1st - Picer Beth Chatto (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
Beautiful, eye-catching grizzle and tan bitch of nearly 12 months, so much more mature and self-assured in the ring. You had to feel under a thick, harsh full coat to appreciate how well made she is, with a thick, pliable pelt and good undercoat. She has a lovely ottery head with a broad muzzle, strong jaw and correct bite, and typical expression. Her shoulders are well laid back and she has a lovely level topline and short, carrot shaped tail well set on. Her front is straight and she has plenty of bone, and stands on neat cat like feet with thick pads. Her good angulation fore and aft enable her to move effortlessly around the ring with confidence. Pleased to award her Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy In Show.
2nd - Carrickfarm Macey (Mrs M Armstrong)
11 month grizzle and tan girl, also with an excellent pelt and just enough topcoat. She is very narrow and has nice angulation all round and moved ok. Her head is good, but just not quite so broad in the muzzle as 1st.
3rd - Fieldsearch Forward Cry (Mr A Harker)

1st - Ravenside Calima (Mr M Lowry)
13 month old beautifully balanced blue and tan bitch of lovely proportions. She has a good ottery head with correct bite, and moderate neck into well placed, nicely laid back shoulders, and her decent length of upper arm and good angulation front and rear allow her to move freely and effortlessly around the ring. She is narrow throughout, with a lovely straight front and is ribbed well back and easy to span. She is strong in the loin and has a lovely topline and tailset. I liked her a lot.
2nd - Joncroft Baby Cakes (Mr C Johnston)
Grizzle and tan bitch of just a year old, and also built along nice lines and unlucky to meet 1st today. She is also nicely angulated, and has a good topline and tailset, well held on the move, is spannable and has correct dentition. She has a good reach of neck into nicely placed shoulders.
3rd - Stineval Kordia JW (Mr & Mrs A G Horner)

This lovely class is headed by two really beautiful grizzle and tan bitches who were from the same kennel and turned out to perfection. Their tight, harsh new jackets were almost impenetrable but covered good undercoats and really thick pliable pelts. They are a credit to their owner, and it was hard to choose between them. Both were shown to good advantage.
1st - Achnagairn Touch Of Class (Mrs A Fraser)
She has an excellent head with a short, broad muzzle and strong lower jaw with big teeth in a correct scissor bite. Spanned well, and has good shoulders with a straight front and correct amount of bone. She is lovely in rib, strong in loin, and well angulated front and rear. She moved beautifully whilst maintaining a lovely outline, really making the most of herself. She pushed very hard for top honours.
2nd - Achnagairn Tutti Frutti (Mrs A Fraser)
The same remarks apply to this gorgeous girl, but in having to separate them I just felt that she didn’t move with quite the activeness of 1st.

1st - Otterbobs Duchess (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)
1st in Minor Puppy Bitch and Maiden Bitch, but just gave way to an older bitch on front movement in this class, which is understandable given her tender age.
2nd - Joncroft Baby Cakes (Mr C Johnston)

1st - Drigothe Broddi (Mr S & Mrs C E Griffiths)
Grizzle and tan bitch who caught my eye with her fluid, economical movement. I liked her a lot for size and type. She is easily spanned, and has a good topline and short, carrot shaped tail well set on. She has an extra thick, pliable pelt and correct double coat, and is well muscled and well angulated – plenty to like.
2nd - Achnagairn Prim N'proper (Mrs A Fraser)
A lot to like here too in this grizzle and tan bitch. She is well constructed with a good otter head and correct bite, and a straight front with just the right amount of bone. She has good shoulders and moves well, but just not quite the coat of 1st on the day.

1st - Ridgebow Rusty Rivet (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
Absolutely gorgeous grizzle and tan bitch who caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring, moving with accuracy and purpose, holding a lovely level topline and with a well set on, short, carrot shaped tail. She is just right for size, being narrow and easily spanned, and has so much breed type. She has a lovely straight front and is just right for bone. Her moderate neck flows into well placed shoulders, and she is ribbed well back. Her ottery head is both feminine but strong with very little stop, a strong jaw and big teeth in a scissor bite. She has good angulation front and rear, and sturdy hindquarters from which to drive, along with a good reach of upper arm, enabling her to really stride out. She is beautifully presented in a correct double coat with harsh topcoat and thick, pliable pelt, and stands on neat, well padded feet. Was delighted to award her Best Bitch and Best In Show.
2nd - Beaconpike Venus (Mr S R & Mrs K M Golding)
Another very nice grizzle and tan bitch, who is also narrow throughout with a good, straight front and ribs carried well back. She has a good head with correct bite of big teeth in a strong jaw. She moved well but not with quite the enthusiasm of 1st, and her coat was just slightly past it’s best.
3rd - Ravenside Masena (Mr M Lowry)
Res - Achnagairn Red Card (Mrs A Fraser)
VHC - Bordurrock Shoot To Thrill (Mr D & Mrs E Gillies)
Entries: 8 Absentees: 7
1st - CH Bardenfox Pussy Galore JW (Mr K H & Mrs D Moore)
She stood alone but this beautiful bitch was a very deserving winner, being just right for size, and lovely to go over, with an excellent thick, harsh top coat on top of a thick, pliable pelt, and easily spannable. She is narrow throughout with a good straight front, just the correct amount of bone, well constructed, well laid back shoulders and ribs carried well back. She has a lovely ottery head with typical expression and a short, broad muzzle and strong jaw with correct bite. She moved steadily and effortlessly with accuracy. Pleased to award her Reserve Best Bitch and Reserve Best In Show.

What a wonderful class of veterans, all enjoying their day out – a credit to their owners.
1st - Drigothe Barbarian (Mr S & Mrs C E Griffiths)
Lovely dark grizzle and tan 7 year old dog who was Res in a strong Open Dog class. Good for size and type, being easily spannable, with good angulation front and rear, and moving well. Pleasing head with little stop, and good teeth in a correct bite.
2nd - Beaconpike In A Storm (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
Loved this rich red grizzle and tan bitch who has a nice head with broad, short muzzle and strong jaw and big teeth in correct scissor bite. Narrow shoulder and ribbed well back, and well angulated. She has a level topline and moves well, and I considered her hard in the final line up but sadly she was very short of coat.

1st Griffiths’ Drigothe Barbarian/Catgallows Raquel by Drigothe. An evenly matched pair of dark grizzle and tans who were moving in unison.
2nd Birrell’s Otterpaws Muninn/Otterpaws Mountain High. Also moved out well together, just not quite as evenly as 1st.
