I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Officers and Committee of the Midland Border Terrier Club for inviting me to judge my first club show. My very competent and Friendly stewards Jem Thomas and Richard Wright, were well organised to keep the day flowing so many thanks for their help. A special thank you to all the exhibitors who trusted me to evaluate their Border Terriers, accepting my decisions graciously. I was very impressed by the standard of presentation particularly the quality of coats. I had some amazingly difficult decisions and in many classes placings were hotly contested, forcing me to ‘split hairs’ over placings. I appreciated that some quality exhibits did not win their classes despite some outstanding breed features. I looked for accurate movement and narrow body lines which were present in my primary winners. The youngsters were particularly noteworthy staying enthusiastic and keen right to the end of the show.

1st - Dandyhow Captain Morgan (Mrs K Irving)
An eye catching grizzle and tan puppy of just 6 months of age enjoying his first show. Neat young man built on lovely narrow lines. He has good head proportions for his age with correct ear placement, keen eye and strong jaw. Excellent length of neck, he has a well laid shoulder and level top line and on the move he uses his hocks well to drive forward covering good ground. His accurate and effortless gait secured him the award of BPIS overall.
2nd - Tarkaswell Top Gun (Mrs S Threaplton)
This chap was bigger framed than 1 and rather on the leg for me. However he has some very good breed qualities. He’s all male with a pleasing masculine head and strong jaw with large teeth. Particularly pleasing jacket with the thickest of pelts. He moved soundly with enthusiasm and has nice lines.

This was a class full of quality and I’m pretty sure placings will change with these lads on other occasions.
1st - Bowencloud Busy Bee JW (Mrs S J Ruth)
Very attractive upstanding boy that catches your eye. He was shown in good coat and body condition. He has a good otter like head. Well angulated fore aft to allow ease of movement and this and his overall balance won him his first position in this strong class of quality males.
2nd - Oakyard Out N'about At Dassett (Mrs S Spafford)
Another lovely headed male with a keen eye he had quite a bit of furnishings and actually when you examine his muzzle and jaw he is strong in this department. I really liked him for breed type and size he’s a free standing showy border that can’t be ignored. He can occasionally crab on the move but he got himself together for me to assess his stride.

A blue and tan that was turned out so well. Attractive head and a very nice length of neck. Good straight front and tight cat like feet. He has an excellent rib of correct length and level top line and well set on tail. Spans easily and I like his overall balance, he moved with drive and purpose.
2nd - Brumberhill Breitling (Mr T & Mrs K Kelly)
Need to get your hands on this boy to appreciate his many good qualities similar to 1. His dark grizzle and tan coat was crisp on a thick pelt. He has good upper arm and well angulated rear which he uses well. I just preferred the head of winner.

He has good substance lovely body lines with his tail well set and carried correctly. I was very pleased to award him BIS.

Blue and tan of lovely size that has so much ring presence. He is very well constructed which enables him to move well. He has a good head. I like his narrow lines and he spans so easily. He was late in the ring and unfortunately I feel this may of unsettled him occasionally on the move.

1st - Gameway Mcvitie JW (Mrs P Clark)
Won this class on size and breed type. He was shown in such a smart grizzle and tan jacket of real quality. He has an unexaggerated head of good proportions and dark keen eye. He was one of the few free standing chaps which make the most of his lovely bodylines which are narrow. He spans easily and has a good top line. He headed this class today on his free striding clean movement.
2nd - Stowthorney Mr Tickle JW (Mr R Brewster & Ms J Green)
This red coated boy who was slightly larger than the winner but he was easily spanned. He has an appealing masculine head with strong jaw and good dentition. His lovely straight front and hind confirmation was well constructed. He moved very well keeping a pleasing top line.

1st - Onthill La Rock At Grizzledale (Mrs M Medhurst)
I just loved everything about this bitch she oozed quality. She catches the eye straight away for ring presence. She’s of handy size, has a very feminine head, good length of neck correct body lines and moved so well in profile but showed a little immaturity in front movement when it came to BPIS but very pleased to award her a well-deserved BPB.
2nd - Picer Beth Chatto (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
Quality was clear to see in this grizzle and tan bitch that also has many of the same good attributes as 1. She has slightly more substance than the winner. A most attractive Otter like head with strong under jaw. Her coat was of correct harsh texture and the pelt was thick. Covering good ground with reach and drive.
3rd - My Custard Cream (Miss A Meynell)

1st - Nantcoch Field Skipper (Mrs J M Phillips)
Good for size grizzle and tan with a nice head and keen expression. Moderate length of neck into a well laid shoulder. Her rib was good for length and deep which also spans easily. She was presented in very good coat and body condition a real credit to her owner. Her movement was very accurate in profile but can be occasionally a little unsettled in her front action which I believe is more to do with her age.
2nd - Terracao's If I Can Dream (Mrs V Hall)
Scores highly in head she has a lovely expression all in moderation with a dark keen eye. She is mature in her body than the winner and has good substance which I liked. Her deep jacket was harsh and her pelt was thick. She moved ok.

This was my strongest class of the day all five were of such high standard which made the final decision down to splitting hairs.
1st - Abisu Bramble (Miss S Moseley)
Cracking grizzle and tan bitch of handy size. She has a lovely otter like head and good strong jaw and correct teeth. Her front legs were lovely straight and narrow. She has a level top line on the move and standing, her tail was of carrot shape and carried nicely. The tweedy jacket was of real quality. She has lovely free flowing movement with reach and drive. She just filled my eye on the move today. So I was pleased to award her Best Bitch and RBIS.
2nd - Oakyard On Song (Mr J Parry)
Really loved this girl too she has such a feminine expression. Many of the comments for the winner apply here too. Her elegant neck flows into lovely bodylines and her very good rib is of good length and easily spans, her loin is strong. She moved very soundly coming and going on her well angulated front and rear. Was a very close decision and she went on to be my Reserve Best Bitch, which was unexpected from this one class.

This red was third in my strong junior bitch class. She has a pleasing head with keen eye and short muzzle. Her body is narrow and her rib is well laid back with good top line and well set tail. She covered the ground with plenty of reach and drive which the 2nd in this class couldn’t match today.
2nd - Abisu Tansy (Miss S Moseley)
Grizzle and tan bitch with stronger head than the winner. She has good breed type with narrow lines. I just preferred the winner’s greater stride.

This red bitch has a lovely feminine otter like head and neat ears. She is particularly good in her shoulder and has a lovely straight front and tight cat like feet. She was in a new short red coat which was harsh and covers a lovely narrow frame. She is built on racy lines and is slightly taller than 1 and also moved well.

Blue and tan bitch larger framed than the winner. She has a very nice head which is well proportioned. She was good in shoulder and top line but didn’t move quite as accurately around the ring.

1st - Sulan Strictly Blues Dancin' (Mrs S J Baxter)
A very well presented blue and tan headed this strong class. She was in tip top condition with plenty of white banding through her jacket which was of good quality. I particularly liked her for size and her ring presence. She was handled so well to get the best out of her but perhaps a little over extended at the rear in the challenge. She is also narrow and has a lovely rib which is carried well back. Her movement was very good.
2nd - Glebeheath Maiden Name At Oakyard (Mr J Parry)
Another well-presented bitch in a lovely red jacket. She has a very good head with neat ears, short muzzle and strong jaw. She is such a lovely border to go over her pelt was loose and thick with good texture to her coat. She was positive on the move and I’m sure could change places with the winner on another occasion.

1st - Byrewick Valentine (Mr R Brewster & Ms J Green)
This bitch had the most outstanding blue and tan coat of the correct colour, it was dense, harsh and her pelt thick. There was so much to like about her particularly her balance and body lines. Her top line is level, her loin is strong, her tail carrot like and well set on which was carried well on the move. I gave her a serious look in the challenge for such good breed type but felt she was just a little strong in the shoulder. She was awarded Best Blue and Tan.
2nd - CH Nantcoch Ffion JW ShCM (Mrs J M Phillips)
Lovely quality bitch with the most vibrant of grizzle coats of good quality. She has a lovely lay of shoulder and a narrow front, moderate length of neck and has a level top line, held throughout. Her movement is spot on with plenty of reach and drive. Pushed one hard here but was pipped today purely on the first being that bit more animated.

Such a lovely class of veterans with lots of depth of quality and they all looked to be enjoying the day. Thank you so much for bringing them.
1st - CH/AM/CAN CH Cedarhill Beyond the Stars JW (Mrs C Dean)
A most appealing chap he is 7 years old. He has a well-developed head which is otter like in appearance. This veteran is so very well constructed which was so apparent when he moved effortlessly over the ground. His coat was in the very best order which was deep and of correct texture. I was delighted to award him Best Veteran in Show.
2nd - CH Cobstoneway River Magic JW ShCM (Miss C Spencer)
Many of the same comments apply as the winner and my notes read very similar to each other. He has a super head which is masculine without being exaggerated with the neatest of ears that lay close to his cheek. I was pleased with his overall balance and he is a very eye catching border easily spanned and moved out well.
