Show Type: Breed
Venue: The Village Hall, Low Hesket, Nr. Carlisle. CA4 0ES
Judge: Ms. Suzanne Coldham (nee Marwood) (Annesuz)
Entries: 104 making 122 entries, plus 3 NFC and 2 Junior Handlers

It was an absolute honour and pleasure to judge the Border Terrier Club’s Open show in Low Hesket and I would like to thank a very hardworking committee for this opportunity. I would also like to thank the exhibitors and spectators for their warm welcome and genuine applause at my placings. There was a good atmosphere throughout the day and good to see so many still ringside to see the top honours at the end.
I was greeted with an excellent entry of 104 dogs making 122 entries and from these I was able to select some top specimens truly representative of our breed. I am not going to wax lyrical about the breed in general but suffice to say in my humble opinion a watch needs to be kept on heads, movement and coats/pelt.
I was pleasantly surprised to find my Best Dog is the grandsire of my Reserve Best Dog and my Best Bitch and Reserve Best Bitch share the same sire as each other.

1st - Remony For A' That (Mrs A E Gregory)
Almost 9 months typy dog, harsh coat, spannable, excellent front, good reach of neck, good tailset. Moved soundly back and forth. Showed very well for one so young. Best Puppy Dog & BOS Puppy In Show
2nd - Pikey Boy By Shiftyfox (Mr G Wildey)
Blue and tan baby who did not make the best of himself. Very uncomfortable in his surroundings on his first outing. He needs time to develop.

1st - Ravenside Le Gourmand (Mr A G & Mrs B A Lattimer)
Racy grizzle dog not in his best coat. Head of good type, excellent teeth a bite. A little bigger than I like but well-balanced and created a pleasing picture when on the move. Showed very well despite the disruption in this class.
2nd - Akenside Feckless (Mrs D McLeod)
I thought this dog was my winner. He goes over very well, in excellent coat and a fabulous head. Very clean lines. He needs handling better to enable him to show off his true potential.

1st - Cedarhill Ghost Writer (Mrs M Fleming)
A very smart dog who immediately took my eye. Loved his head, excellent big teeth, keen eye, flat topskull. A well balanced dog of correct size, level topline, narrow throughout but with substance. He is well angulated, good bone and small tight feet. Put down in good hard condition, he moved effortlessly round the ring. Pushed very hard for Best Dog but pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog. He should gain his title with ease. Reserve BIS, Reserve Best Dog
2nd - Cedarhill Authorisation (Mrs J Alpe)
It was a surprise to find this dog is the litter brother of the winner. Much the same comments apply. Unlucky to meet the winner in such top form.

Another dog to catch my eye. Honest dog of good type. I liked his size and conformation, a typical head, good eye, sufficient bone, good length of back. Coat ok on the day.
2nd - Lairehope Highland Chief Of Tweedburn (Mrs C Archibald)
Very honest dog, good bone, tight feet, neck well into good shoulders, narrow body, level topline, excellent tail. He moved very soundly fore and aft. He could put more in which could take him higher.

VHC - Ridgebow Tracker (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)

1st - Beaconpike Red Saturn (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
Shown in hard condition. Superb otter head, good bite, narrow front, well ribbed, easily spanned. Carrying a harsh coat. Sound fore and aft but he does not make the best of himself.
2nd - Cedarhill Once Upon a Time (Mrs C Dean)
Young blue and tan who shows very well. Another tight coat, ticking just coming through. Typical of this kennel. Didn’t move quite so true as the winner today.

Res - Ravenside Rumours About Caldewgate (Mr A E Burke)

1st - Carrickfarm Macey (Mrs M Armstrong)
) Very typy puppy, sufficient bone. Moving a little close on the front but time is on her side. Tight coat and thick pelt. Makes a very pleasing picture both standing and moving. I liked this very promising pup.
2nd - Nottorg Nostalgia (Mrs A Taylor)
Close up to the winner but her coat is on the blow. Preferred head of 1 but a promising pup who moved sufficiently well to gain her place.

1st - Ravenside Calima (Mr M Lowry)
Absolutely stunning blue and tan. Superb head and conformation, well ribbed, strong loin, level topline and a true carrot tail. Presented in tip top condition with a harsh, tight coat and thick pelt. For me the perfect feminine size. As sound as they come. Won this class with heaps to spare. Pushed hard for Best Bitch but time is on her side. Best Puppy Bitch, Best Junior, Reserve Best Bitch and Best Puppy in Show. A pleasure to go over her.
2nd - Tink Belle At Spanwise (Mrs L A Hardman)
Correct size red with a typical head. Lacking coat today and needs to settle.

1st - Chorbeck Angel Eyes (Mrs H Haughton)
Lovely feminine bitch, took my eye as she entered the ring. Loved her head, dark expressive eyes, good neck into well laid shoulders. Narrow throughout and easily spanned. Moved very well. She was not in her best clothes today but sufficient to head up a strong class of bitches.
2nd - Totherend Blue Jean Topsy (Mr R G & Mrs E A Wright)
Another excellent bitch who caught my eye. Balanced, typy blue and tan in a harsh tight coat. Pushed very hard for the top spot but on the day was moving a little wider behind than the winner.
3rd - Ridgebow Pendle Witch (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
Entries: 5 Absentees: 0
1st - Catgallows Serendipity (Mrs V I Mason)
Very good type. Well balanced bitch, typical head, short strong muzzle with good teeth. Well laid back shoulders, excellent front and rear. The tightest of coats and a thick pelt. Moved beautifully. A natural show girl.
2nd - Brackenfell Boogaloo (J Axon & D Taylor)
Another good type, typical head, reach of neck, narrow throughout. Lost to the winner on coat and movement.

This one was 3rd in a strong Junior class. She moved a lot better in this class to go higher up the order. Nice size, great coat and front.

2nd - Beaconpike Venus (Mr S R & Mrs K M Golding)
Another very nice bitch. True otter head, well balanced, typy. Very easily spanned, moved well. I would prefer her a size bigger. Today she was totally devoid of coat and paid the price.

2nd - Remony Frosted Ivy JW ShCM (Mrs A Gregory)
Two lovely bitches of excellent breed type. Both in good harsh tight coats, thick pelts and presented and shown in good hard condition. Had to nitpick to separate them. My preference was the head and bone of the winner.

1st - CH/AM/CAN CH Cedarhill Beyond the Stars JW (Mrs C Dean)
A stunning dog of ideal size, superb head with no exaggeration. Well laid shoulders. Narrow throughout but with enough substance to do a good days work. Good bone. Level topline. Correctly angulated hindquarters. Shown and presented in hard condition, topped off with a harsh, tight coat. Moving fore and aft he presented a picture of a well balanced, typical dog of the breed. Hardly surprising he is a multi champion. It gave me great pleasure to award him top honours today – Best Dog, Best Veteran & Best In Show
2nd - CH Lairehope Lord of the Glen At Tweedburn (Mrs C Archibald)
It was a pleasure to be able to handle this dog. I liked him a lot and many of the same comments apply to him. Again I had to nit pick and felt he was not moving quite so freely on the day.
