Championship and Breed Club Shows

My thanks to the committee of the Yorks, Lancs and Cheshire Border Terrier club for inviting me to judge, to the stewards Dave Mitchell and Brian Dickinson for their assistance on the day and to the exhibitors for their entries. A special thanks to the girls in the kitchen who provided such excellent refreshments during the day.

The rather small hall made a triangle impossible and movement difficult to assess. Being short in stature I find it difficult to span on the table and prefer to do so on the ground. As a general comment several dogs lacked hard condition, with a firm second thigh a rarity. Several dogs could have benefited from a little preparation prior to the show, although scissoring of the legs and undersides should not be visible. I would have preferred to see fewer level bites in youngsters.

Minor Puppy – Dog

1st: Oxcroft Rocco (Mr J Price) 7 ½ months and very mature for his age. Typical head of this kennel with large teeth and good expression. Narrow front and moved OK.
2nd: Royday Bond (Mr R Longton) 7 months but a different type from the winner. Nice size for his age. Has a good length of neck, correct shoulder placement and tight coat.

1st: Foxthorn McVicar (Mr R F & Mrs S Taylor) 11 months, a lively dog who took time to settle. Strong head, large teeth, dark eye and well ribbed. Harsh coat and thick pelt, needs to strengthen at his rear end. BEST PUPPY DOG
2nd: Blaisdon Trailblazer (Mr J N Thomas) Same age as the winner, has an appealing head and expression but up to size for me. Moved OK in his undercoat today.
3rd: Chorbeck Third Time Lucky (Mrs H Haughton)

1st: Sweeping Foxtrot for Kgills (Imp Swe) (Mr K J & Mrs G Bate) I liked this blue & tan dog for his size and outline. Lovely head with correct bite. Neck flows nicely into good shoulder. Thick pelt with excellent ticking and double coat. Tight feet and moved well.
2nd: Brumberhill Brigadoon (Mr S A McPherson) 13 month old and needs a little more maturity. Pleasing outline, narrow straight front on neat feet. Moved well but no coat today.
3rd: Ycart Best Shot Remmington (Mr K K & Mrs T J Fraser & Butler)

2nd: Chorbeck Third Time Lucky (Mrs H Haughton) Handy size with harsh jacket, not the movement of the winner. Good rib but tail set rather low.

1st: Iacheslei Cantus JW (Miss A Harrison) Nice type of dog. Pleasing head with large teeth and strong jaw. Nicely balanced with a good lay of shoulder. Moved truly holding his top line well on the move.
2nd: Gretacs The Wizard (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness) Well proportioned head with good expression. Easily spanned, well ribbed back, nice tail set. Movement not as positive as the winner.
3rd: Ragatam Lets Go over Borderbridge (Miss B J Singh)

1st: Ragatam Joker at Paleside (Mr & Mrs D Mitchell) I last judged this dog as a youngster, he did not disappoint then or now. Good size, typical head with strong under jaw and neat ears. Narrow front, correct body shape with ribs not oversprung, double coat and thick pelt. Moved well both front and rear. RESERVE BEST DOG
2nd: Nickeltweed Lets Go Joe (Mr A & Mrs N Harris) A size larger but fits the standard well. Strong head with large teeth. In full coat with well angulated rear. Playing his handler up today which reflected in his movement being a little erratic.
3rd: Ragatam Hawk at Staynorwood (Mr & Mrs G Richardson)

1st: Ruelata Acrobat At Redfox (Mr & Mrs D B Marr) Just right for size. Strong short muzzle with correct bite. Good length of neck flows nicely into shoulder. Harsh tight coat, well set tail, moved OK.
2nd: Brumberhill Blue Tempest (Mr S A Mcpherson) Different type to the winner being lighter in bone and very narrow. Straight front, easily spanned, this blue and tan lacked coat on the day.
3rd: Iacheslei Torus JW (Miss A Harrison)

1st: Cowlishaw Silver Lady by Chatmoss (Mr D J & Mrs PM Lockley) Just 6 months and very much a baby. Feminine head, nice dark eye and good bite. Harsh coat and loose pelt enjoying her day out.

1st: Golden Rosa at Blackmine (Miss T James) 11 month, strong headed youngster with large teeth. Just the right amount of bone, straight front, good bodylines, coat and pelt. Moved with purpose holding her top line.
BEST BITCH PUPPY AND BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.
2nd: Picer Gilliflower (Mr G A & Mrs S Pickering) Another nice bitch, close up to the winner but just preferred the movement of 1. Good expression, neat feet and well set tail.
3rd: Pebbledyke Perroit (Mr K L Foster)

1st: Badgerholme Ascot Opal (Mr & Mrs B Dickinson & Miss T James) A light red maturing nicely. Liked her head and expression. Has a short strong muzzle and correct scissor bite of large teeth. Narrow front, well angulated rear. Good length of body, thick pelt but lacked sufficient coat.
2nd: Kgills Five Jive (Mrs J Broomhead) Blue & tan, a different type being shorter coupled and a fraction deep in chest. Straight front, good double coat and tail set.
3rd: Picer Beersheba (Mr A & Mrs H A Fletcher)
h3. Novice – Bitch

1st: Ragatam Kingsai at Redfox (Mr & Mrs D B Marr) An easily spanned red bitch of good proportions who came to hand well. Feminine head, good lay of shoulder, thick pelt and tight jacket. A strong back end ensured she moved soundly both ways.
2nd: Magic Pearl by Ragatam (Miss T Peacock) Very similar to the winner, same comments apply and could change places on another day.
3rd: Beenaben Balsam (Mr J B Baxter)

1st: Picer Grace Darling (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering) I have admired this bitch from the ringside and she lived up to my expectations, although her coat was just going over. Strong head with keen expression. Good reach of neck leads into well placed shoulders. Easily spanned and well constructed all through. Moved well and with ease.
BEST BITCH AND RESERVE BEST IN SHOW.
2nd: Appleside Gala at Caldewgate (Mr A Burke) A nice bitch of good type who pushed hard for 1st place. A well constructed shoulder leads to a good length of rib. Good rear angulation with neat feet and carrying a harsh coat, well presented.
3rd: Foxthorn Texas Star at Chatmoss (Mrs P M Lockley)

1st: Wagtail Lass Via Ycart (Mr K K Fraser & Mrs T J Butler) A handy sized bitch with good workmanlike qualities. Has a very feminine head with well placed ears and keen expression. Easily spanned, well ribbed, harsh jacket and loose pelt. Covered the ground well. RESERVE BEST BITCH
2nd: Oxcroft Rumour (Mr J Price) A bitch I have judged before. Ideal size with the best of otter heads, correct bite and nice body lines. Well set carrot shaped tail in good coat. Rear movement not as positive today.
3rd: Iris Sparkling Image at Adrival (Mrs J Bone)

h3. Special Beginners Dog or Bitch

1st: Chorbeck Charlie Chaplin (Mrs H Haughton) Placed in junior dog. Head OK but would have preferred less stop. Appears heavier than he is, but carries a thick coat. Moved OK.
2nd: Foxthorn Texas Star at Chatmoss (Mrs P M Lockley) Good sized bitch, with a head of good proportions, well balanced, coat OK.
3rd: Kgills Five Jive (Mrs J Broomhead)

1st: CH Ashbrae Poacher (Mr A & Mrs E Cuthbertson) This dog is a fine example of the lasting qualities of the border terrier. At 8 years old he still has a perfect bite of large teeth and a good otter head with keen expression. He has narrow body lines and is easily spanned. Good double jacket and loose pelt. Moves with drive and in excellent condition. Pleased to award him BEST IN SHOW and was a pleasure to go over.
