Show Type: Breed
Venue: Jedburgh
Judge: Mrs J Guvercin (Glebeheath)
May I take this opportunity to thank the Officers and committee for inviting me to judge their show and for their warm welcome and hospitality. My two stewards, Eddie Houston and Jimmy Gilpin had the ring running like clockwork, which enabled me to get on with the job of judging a quality entry of 141 dogs making 177 entries.
My sincere thanks to all exhibitors, who entrusted me with their dogs and accepted my placings in a sporting fashion, the day was a most memorable experience.
The North can be proud of their dogs, as there were many quality examples on display, all temperaments appeared steady, with just an occasional bored one! Not unusual, as most, I think, would rather be out chasing vermin!!
A handful of kinked tails didn’t surprise me, but youngsters with poor mouths did! Having said that, there were some lovely dogs in the puppy classes and placings were hotly contested with very little to separate them. My interpretation of the standard for balance ie: fairly long, is slightly longer than tall.
I feel that a border needs length as well as narrowness to negotiate a fox earth, but still retaining heart/lung room to enable it to follow a horse. Coats were at varying stages, but as long as I could find evidence , I didn’t let it rule out, an otherwise, good exhibit.

A super class to start the day, with much quality on offer.
1st - Ravenside Workforce (Mr M Lowry)
Grizzle who caught my eye for balance as he came in. Lovely for size and type with masculine head and dark eye. Good neck and forehand with lovely rib and shortish loin. Holds a nice topline both standing and on the move, which he did well for one so young . Ample bone leading to small, well cushioned feet. Coat was missing, but there was evidence and he ticked so many of my boxes that I couldn’t deny him, promising pup. BPD & BPIS
2nd - Comberdown Curragh (Mr I & Mrs A Higham)
Richly coloured g/t in super coat and condition. Has a typical head and good shaped eye, though not as dark as winner. Narrow body, that was shorter in length than 1, but has good loin and level topline, covered by a thick pelt leading to a decent tail , set and carriage. Moves out soundly, with purpose and accuracy on best of feet. Well presented and handled to advantage.

1st - Ycart Best Shot Remmington (Mr K K Fraser, Mrs T J & Butler)
Grizzle youngster nearing the end of puppy now and starting to look more like an adult. Good head with strong muzzle and dark, keen eye. Ears are good size and correct shape and set, but he can still settle there. Holds a really pleasing topline which leads to a well set tail, correctly carried on the move. Steps out well and can still firm up behind but covers the ground well in profile. Has a harsh coat on a thick pelt which covers quite a mature body that was fit, but still carrying condition , easily spanned.
2nd - Beaconpike Red Saturn (Mr S & Mrs K Golding)
Red with lovely head and expression. Good enough in body and has a harsh textured coat on a good pelt. Holds a good topline on the move, but couldn’t match winner for tailset. Has ample bone and substance, without being overdone anywhere and moves well on tight feet.
3rd - Benny the Dip (Mr D & Mrs C Hodgson)
Res - Ollivander Benjamin of Cringletie (Mrs R E A Fowler)
VHC - Skylark Sunrise (Dr S Meddle)

1st - Stineval Maraschino (Mr & Mrs A Horner)
Very strong headed dog with powerful jaw and well set ear. Firm body , well ribbed back with a level topline and thick pelt. He is a nice size and has a really good attitude which shows off his virtues, including his lovely tailset and carriage. Went away soundly on neat feet.
2nd - When I Was In the Band (Atkinson & Young)
Similar in type to 1, stronger again in body and couldn’t quite match his tailset, but managed to move soundly enough around the ring to secure his place here.
3rd - Oughterside Minty's Pride (Robert Scott)

1st - Ravenside Hurricane Run (Mr N & Mrs A Duxbury)
This dark g/t puppy was 4th in the hotly contested minor puppy class and looked much more at home in here. Have to confess that he was one of those dogs, that the more I saw of him, the more I liked him. He was in super coat and condition, which covered a lithe, rangy body, both deep and narrow. He is well developed in his head, has a good neck and decent forehand and moved very well, just hope he doesn’t grow anymore, which is where he had to give way to the other quality exhibits in the earlier class. Never the less, I could see him easily following a horse and would certainly get to ground today.
2nd - Grettacs the Wizard (Mr B & Mrs L P Inness)
Grizzle/tan with good head of nice proportions. Similar for balance to 1 but lighter in body and bone all through. Matched 1 in most departments but not his pelt or overall bloom. Has many workman like qualities and was my sort of border.
3rd - StBedehounds Frank in Sense of Raleniro (Mr M J & Mrs D A Lorraine)
Res - Tyneaster Ancnoc Brom (Mrs S F Gill)

1st - Tythrop Tap On Wood (Mr M Lowry)
Light grizzle 6 months pup who took my eye immediately for his beautiful balanced outline. He has a super head and his body and rib are my ideal, being deep, narrow and well ribbed up, but with a shortish loin. His topline is firm and level with a smooth line from his head , through his nice forehand, to his well set and carried tail. Good pelt and evidence of harsh coat. Could be firmer in his hocks going away, which cost him later on, but was absolutely stunning in profile and could not be denied. Has a very showy disposition and I’m sure will be much admired.
2nd - Ollivander Benjamin of Cringletie (Mrs R E A Fowler)
Nice sized grizzle dog with good topline. Who moved and showed OK but had to stand in the shadow of one on this occasion.

1st - Brumborder River Skipper (Mr G Widey)
Dark g/t heading a really nice class of males, with his strong but beautifully balanced head and powerful jaw. Lovely jacket and pelt on his ideal body ,for both bone and substance, without size, making him easy to span. Covered the ground with a really long stride on his good feet and looked like he could keep that going all day. A very workman like dog, who throws a fabulous outline, both standing and on the move. Pushed very hard for the top spot and managed to beat my Best Bitch, being a shade longer, which I prefer. Quality dog. RBD & RBIS
2nd - Vallemoss Voodoo At Roxess (Mr J T & Mrs N Todd)
Lovely rich red coat of good texture and depth on this gorgeous headed dog. Stole my heart when I checked his dark eye for shape and expression, which was spot on, he simply looked me right in the eye and wagged his tail. Is basically well made with a nice topline and tail carriage and a good front. Was well handled, but could be tidied in his underline to advantage. Moved out freely on well boned legs and tight cushioned feet.

1st - Lairehope Lord of the Glen (Mrs C Archibald)
Light grizzle of nice size with a super head of the correct proportions. Short strong muzzle and little stop with a lovely expression from his correctly set, dark eye. His dark ear is well shaped and set. Lovely straight forelegs, strong pasterns and neat feet with narrow front on an easily spanned body, with a thick pelt and full jacket, which suits him. Super topline and strong loin, with correct tail which he used . Has balanced, moderate angulation fore and aft moves OK, but better in front than behind. Is a picture going round and looks as though he could follow a horse and do the job when he gets there. Pleased me enough to take the top spot. BD & BIS
2nd - Remony Blue Diamond At Loiriston (Dr R & Mrs F Wheatley)
Strong headed blue/tan with a fab double coat of lovely texture and colour. Ears could sit neater but doesn’t detract from his other head qualities. Nicely proportioned body with good rib and level topline, leading to correctly set carroty tail. Moved well on his nice feet and ample boned legs. Called him back to the challenge at the end of the day, but sadly he had already gone, pity.

1st - Dugaden Tusker ShCM (Martin, Joyce)
Nice headed blue/tan with dark eye and largish, but well shaped and set ear. Lovely coat and pelt on a well ribbed up body of sufficient length and depth. Has plenty of bone and substance, but is still spannable. Good mover, both free flowing and accurate. Won here with a bit to spare.
2nd - Argyll Drummer (Mrs. L. Gow)
Nice sized grizzle with a really good coat texture and pliable, thick pelt. Strong head and jaw, ears could sit tidier, but is still typey. Moved OK but was outshone by one.
3rd - Mazengarb Treacle over Buckwilde (Mrs M Blomfield-Willis)

1st - Golden Rosa At Blackmine (Miss T James)
8mths red/grizzle with strong but feminine head in the deepest of double coats that still had good texture, along with a thick, loose pelt. Is well angulated both ends and moves accordingly. Has both length and depth through ribs with good loin and rear assembly, topped off with a super carrot tail. Has plenty of bone, leading to small thick padded feet. Look forward to seeing her as an adult in a crisp new jacket, will turn heads, no doubt.
2nd - Tyneaster Bowmore Duana (Mrs S F Gill)
Blue/tan Only a month younger than the winner, but it showed. Head OK but ears need to drop and settle a bit. Is finer all through than one, but is nicely made and moves well when settled. Has lots to like and was good for size and type.

1st - Bramblebrae Violet (Mr G Wildey)
What a nice bitch she is! Super head, ottery without coarseness, balanced in its proportions and with strong jaws and dark eyes. Neat ears finish it off and it is set on a good neck and forehand, that flows into a nicely balanced body. Very good coat texture and thick pelt, covering a very easily spanned , well ribbed back body. Not too heavy in bone, just enough, with neat feet. Moved very well and caught my eye with her free, forward going action and lovely set and carried tail. Liked her a lot and was just pipped by the dogs attitude and nothing more. BPB & BOSPIS
2nd - Picer Gilliflower (Mr G & Mrs S Pickering)
Another nice blue/tan that I have admired ringside and was pleased to get my hands on her today. Good head coming with strong jaw and neat ear again with a nice front and narrow spannable body. Moved well in profile just not quite matching one in rear action but none the less sound and ground covering. Carries a lovely level topline, both standing and gaiting, with well boned legs and small feet.

Grizzle/tan in really good deep double coat of good texture that was well presented. Nice head which is developing well and has a keen expression from her dark eye. Has a lovely topline and a super outline from any angle, is spannable, with good ribs, strong loin and nice tail. Looks workman like and has all the tools to do the job, quality bitch. Best Junior
2nd - Howthwaite In Violet (Mr R & Mrs E Barrett)
Lovely quality Blue/tan of top size but is easily spanned. Has much to like about her and kept catching my eye for type and balance. Strong, but feminine head with well balanced and powerful muzzle. Good rib shape and has enough depth to her narrow body. Level topline, fabulous coat and pelt and moves well holding a lovely outline and shortish tail. Correct for bone and has good feet.

Strong headed, but feminine grizzle bitch with nice eye and ear. Lovely for size and is easily spanned but could carry a little less condition to her advantage. Coat was just coming in and pelt was very thick and pliable. Plenty of bone and good feet which she moved out OK on when she settled.
2nd - Tyneaster Ancnoc Dara (Mrs S F Gill)
Red in short harsh coat with nice front and rather nice body lines. Has a nice balance about her and is good for size but couldn’t quite match one for head

Blue/tan with nicely balanced head that can still come on yet, but is typical. Good for size and type and carries a nice topline and well set tail, with the best of crisp, double coats ample bone and small feet. Was very dour, especially in the challenge and therefore needs handling to appreciate her nice quality.
2nd - Howthwaite Amber Grain (Mr R J Barratt)
Grizzle without her coat today but is still a good one. Strong head and jaw on a nice body, with good length and decent topline, pushed one very hard, moved out well.

1st - Ravenside Ma Biche At Ridgebow (Mr N Duxbury)
Dark grizzle in tip top condition with really good coat and thick, loose pelt. Has a super rib that is long and well back in to her strong loin. Skull is good and muzzle is strong, but I would like it a shade shorter for perfect proportion. Neat ear and dark eye compliment it. Moderately angulated with narrow body. Good firm topline, standing and moving , which she did well on nicely boned, straight forelegs and neat feet, correctly carrying her tail.
2nd - Wagtail Lass Via Ycart (Mr K K Fraser & Mrs T J Butler)
Another nice grizzle with feminine head and keen eye. Good for size and general type with harsh coat and thick pelt on a spannable body with level topline. Looks workman like and as though she could do the job, just fractionally preferred one in body.
3rd - Lairehope Ruby Romance (Mr P & Mrs K Lothian)

1st - CH Remony Barley Twist JW (Mrs A E Gregory)
Grizzle/tan In a brand new jacket of good texture with thick pelt and nice overall bloom. Strong head, has a quality about her and is built along the right lines. Not too heavy in bone with the neatest of feet and is narrow throughout with super straight forelegs. Is good in rib and loin with well developed hindquarters and has a nice flow from her neck to her tail. A fraction more length to her body would make her even better for me, but she is quality throughout and well deserves her title BB &BOSIS .
2nd - Ragatam Jewel (Miss T J Peacock)
Red of considerable quality, with ottery head and good length to her neck. Spot on for size and has a deep double coat that was just past its best , but still harsh enough, on a very good pelt. Has a super topline and spans easily. Particularly liked her rear assembly which she uses well on the move and is balanced by her well set and carried tail. All border with an unmistakable silhouette, pushed one hard and could change places on another day I’m sure. RBB

1st - CH Irton Silver Knight (Fryer, Mr. D.& Mrs. A.)
One of the first I admired when he was just a junior. He has lost none of his charm or quality and although I would probably want him a fraction smaller, there is very little else I would change on him. From his super otter head to his, for me, perfect balanced body and lovely bone and feet. Has a lovely long flattish rib from his good shoulders to his strong loin. Lovely to see him again. BVIS
2nd - CH Ragatam Crackerjack JW (Peacock, Tracey J.)
Another super quality veteran who I was thrilled to get my hands on. More the size I would want but not quite the head of one, but still typical. Still retains a good front and super feet with which he moved well on. Excellent topline and deep, narrow body, still spannable, worthy champion.
3rd - Tweedburn Sweetheart (Mrs C Archibald)
