Show Critique:

With apologies for the delay in submitting this critique.
My sincere thanks to the officers and committee of East Anglia Border Terrier Club for offering me this appointment.
Huge thanks to my sole steward Rob Brewster who efficiently organised the ring and exhibits all day despite being in poor health and needing constant medication throughout the day. Most of all my appreciation to the exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to assess your dogs.
With the ever rising cost of suitable venues, it was necessary to move this show from the much appreciated previous Burgess Hall at St Ives to a new Leisure Centre at Littleport. On the day the huge venue was shared with a large number of indoor bowls enthusiasts which meant there was a longish walk from the large car park to our hall. The hall itself was large enough but dog cages all around the hall gave rise to lots of noise and distraction from barking dogs which was very evident when listening to my dictaphone. At lunchtime, with lots of people all trying to use the cafe/restaurant at the same time, this caused long queues and even longer waiting times for food and drinks to arrive, which in turn meant the lunch break overran.
I had the honour of judging the first border terrier club show to schedule Champion dog and bitch classes.
Prior to the show I was undecided about such classes but having here seen the smallish entries for both Open and Champions on reflection I see little point or need for them.
As always coats were at various stages but the exhibits were with a few exceptions in good condition. All males were entire. Bites were better than at previous appointments and I only found a few with misplaced teeth, however the size of teeth varies considerably. Although not a fault, I noticed a few liver noses. Several exhibits could benefit from attention to feet to produce the small feet as required. Movement in general was better at the rear than in front with too many swinging fronts, moving wide or toeing in.

An eyecatching dog who demanded attention from the moment he entered the ring. Of ideal size and weight he spans easily and looks good from all angles. Head is typical with good shaped dark eyes that give a real varminty expression. He is just right for bone with a narrow straight front ending in neat tight feet. Excellent lay of shoulder and rib shape through to sound hind quarters. This excellent balanced construction allows him to stride out round the ring moving easily and looking good in profile.. Has a good tailset and harsh double coat with sufficient pelt. Pleased to award him the DOG CC & BEST IN SHOW

2nd - Oakyard Out N'about At Dassett (Mrs S Spafford)

Another from the top drawer this red grizzle was unlucky to meet the winner on top form. He is of correct size with a nice flat skull has a strong muzzle and large teeth. Looks good in outline and well constructed both ends. With a harsh coat and pelt, his condition is excellent, which he uses to move truely both coming and going.

A lovely exhibit who I awarded well at my previous appointment. On the leg he is rangy but so well put together in all corners. With a super head and straight narrow front he stands and handles well. Spannable he had a harsh double coat and loose pelt today. Moved with confidence covering the ground well. Very close up to the winners.

2nd - Wadesleia Mr Herriot (Mrs H A & Mr A Fletcher)

Another old favourite of mine. He has the strongest of heads with excellent bite of large teeth and super expression. In good coat today he moved well on neat tight feet. Good length of neck and perfect tail set. With good angles front and rear, he was in firm condition with good muscle definition and moved soundly.

Of good type this dark g/tan is well put together in all areas. His head is not overdone and carries a good bite, ears a fraction large. With a dense coat and thick pelt he moved well on neat feet holding his level topline on the move. In good condition he just seemed a little disinterested today.

What a cracking bitch this is. Not a small girl but she spans deceptively well and looks good in outline when standing and moving. With a strong head of correct proportions, strong jaw and lovely bite, her ears are well placed. Clean neck leads to an excellently constructed shoulder with a straight narrow front and tidy feet. She has a narrow body with lovely shaped ribs, strong loin and well angled rear in firm condition. Her double coat revealed plenty of undercoat with a thick skin. She strode out well in every direction and I liked enough to award her BITCH CC & BEST OPPOSITE SEX

2nd - Sulan Strictly Blues Dancin' (Mrs S J Baxter)

A b/tan of good quality with lots to like. Of good size her head has a flat skull with good width between the ears and strong muzzle. Just right for bone with a straight front and neat feet. Good length of rib leads to racy hindquarters and a well set tail. With both topline and underline looking good she moves better at the rear than the front.

3rd - Argentail Titania by Onthill (Mr R & Mrs A Ramus)

A decent size with typical head and expression she has a strong bite of large teeth. Nice narrow front and OK for bone. Good front assembly and shape of ribs, carrying a full double coat with thick pelt. Moves well bur lacks bend of stifle.

2nd - CH Otterbobs Xolana (Mr J R & Mrs H Gilpin)

A close decision between 1 & 2 and she is of very similar size and has many of the winners’ qualities. Her head is of good proportions and has a good strong bite. Liked her keen expression and the way her neck flows into excellent shoulders, a level topline with her tail spot on. Ideal for bone another with the neatest of feet in first class condition. Has good coat and loose pelt, her well developed rear end is used to cover the ground as she drives from behind.

1st - Int/Am/Can CH Sulan Fancy That (Mrs S J Baxter)

At almost 11 years, I have given this bitch a veteran class before and her quality goes on. She has a good head with short strong muzzle. Of good size and still spannable, she has quality all through being good in front, both quarters and still holding a level topline. In fit condition for her age she has a crisp double coat and still moves soundly both ways.

2nd - Southash Cherry Bliss at Smurfski (Mr J C B Yore)

At over 8 this handy sized bitch spans easily and has a feminine head of good quality with neat ears and expression. Nicely balanced she is good in profile with level topline, correct tailset and decent underline. Nice front , neat feet and good in body through to nicely angulated rear. In firm condition her coat is thick and she drove out positively at both ends.

3rd - Baywillow Brown Braid JW ShCM (Mrs G Hyslop)

Another smaller compact type who spans with ease. Strong head with short, broad muzzle. Good length of neck to a front which although straight her legs are rather short leaving her rather unbalanced. With thick coat and pelt her tail is of the best i.e. well set, short and carrot like. She moved well both coming and going.
