Grizzle and tan 6 month old pup giving a lot away to the class winner today. Good size and well proportioned for age. Correct head with well placed ears, dark eye giving keen expression. Good depth, easily spannable good length to back. Just preferred topline of the class winner today but another very nice typical puppy.

I want to thank the society for inviting me to judge Border Terriers for the first time. I was absolutely thrilled with my entry, and I had some lovely exhibits to go over and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was pleased to see all had good bites, all had good temperaments and most were in good coat. A few, particularly the males, were verging on too big for me. Also, I feel I should urge exhibitors not to run with their dogs, it makes the movement harder to assess and can cause the dogs not to stride out properly. Thank you all for entering under me and thank you to my brilliant stewards Helen and Kev for keeping the ring running efficiently and smoothly.

What a class! Some beautiful exhibits present, and the first 3 could easily swap places on another day

Another lovely young grizzle and tan D who has just hit 6 months. Up to size, but he is nicely mature for his age, and presented in tip top condition. Such an intelligent expression on him. Good bite and spannable. He was stood on neat feet and straight legs with good bone and beautiful rear angulation. He did give away his age on the move, but I have no doubt this will improve as he grows up.

Thank you to my stewards who helped me with their friendly efficiency that made it easy for me to concentrate on the Border Terrier judging. A bit of pressure to get out of the ring but I hope this did not spoil anything for my top winners or the other exhibitors who seemed to appreciate my choices out of a wonderful group of dogs. A couple of close bites and the odd bump in tails, some under/over weight exhibits which was a shame as some may well have moved further up the line. As expected a great deal of variation in coats but the vast majority were presented as well as they could be in their growth cycle. Thanks to everyone who entered and showed such good sportsmanship in accepting my decisions and supporting others. I was delighted with my class winner lines ups for both dogs and bitches, some hotly contested classes and tough choices for me throughout the day.

Manchester Championship Show
15th Jan 2026
Judge: Dr Ian Gabriel (Gaybryl)
Many thanks for the lovely entry, both in terms of quality and quantity. I thoroughly enjoyed my day with the Border Terriers. When I last judged I felt there were too many with houndy large ears, this did not seem to be replicated in today’s entry which was pleasing and expression was generally much improved. What I did notice was that front action is something that we need to watch. Being Manchester and the last Championship show pre Crufts there were quite a few dogs who had been stripped in preparation and quite a few out of coat. In part that did play a part in some of my fineer placings.

Another nice puppy of good overall type. Appealed for his overall silhouette which was correct and balanced. Another with a pleasing head and expression. Nice dark eye. Pleasing front with good straight forelegs. Narrow in the body and well ribbed back. Nice hindquarters with correct angulation. Neat, small feet. Good tail which is carried well on the move. Not quite the drive of the 1st placed dog going away and out of jacket today. Will watch him with interest.

8 month old, grizzle & tan puppy, slightly out of coat on the day but it was coming through, thick pelt. Masculine head, moderately broad skull, with ears dropping close to the cheek, correct scissor bite. Narrow and easily spanned, standing on well padded, neat feet. Nothing exaggerated and nicely proportioned. With good angulation front and rear that allowed for lovely drive and reach on the move. Beat his sister for BP, but delighted to see he was awarded Terrier Puppy Grp 4.

Judge: Joanna Taylor (Barkanellie)
I would like to thank the society for giving me the opportunity to judge border terriers for the first time. I had a super entry and some lovely dogs to go over. There were a number of dogs light on coat, presumably due to preparing for Crufts, which impacted some placings. Overall movement was good, as were teeth, tails and temperaments. I was pleased to see my BoB take TG4 any my BP take TPG3. Special thanks to my steward Libby Wain who kept everything on track and organised.

I want to thank the West Midland Terrier Society Committee and Officers for inviting me to judge Border Terriers at their prestigious Premier Open Show on Valentines day 2026. I had a lovely day and really enjoyed myself. Very grateful to my stewards that made sure I could fully concentrate on the lovely terriers that were presented to me. Thank you to all exhibitors that entered their dogs under me. You all contributed to a great experience for my first UK judging appointment. (Ben Regeer, NL)

Almost 9-month-old, grizzle and tan pup male that is a bit bigger in size yet spannable. Balanced angulation front and rear. Good coat with a thick pelt. He carries a strong masculine head with a dark eye and keen expression. Ears a bit large. Strong muzzle, black nose and scissor bite. Forelegs straight with fitting bone. In outline and on the move the topline broke a little.
