Promising baby of just 6 months. Everything in the right place for her age. Good shape and built on clean lines. Pleasing feminine head, dark eye and a keen expression. Well made front and stands on good legs and feet. Firm body with a strong topline and a good tailset and carriage. Presented in good jacket. Once she settled moved well on a good stride, BPB.

My sincere thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege to go over your dogs
Thank you all for the wonderful entry in terms of numbers & the depth & quality I had to judge, however I did have concerns about the size & movement of some of the exhibits & found a couple of mouths that were not quite correct
A huge thank you to my two stewards Bridget Singh & Anita Taylor for their help on the day

Thank you to my stewards who helped me with their friendly efficiency that made it easy for me to concentrate on the Border Terrier judging. A bit of pressure to get out of the ring but I hope this did not spoil anything for my top winners or the other exhibitors who seemed to appreciate my choices out of a wonderful group of dogs. A couple of close bites and the odd bump in tails, some under/over weight exhibits which was a shame as some may well have moved further up the line. As expected a great deal of variation in coats but the vast majority were presented as well as they could be in their growth cycle. Thanks to everyone who entered and showed such good sportsmanship in accepting my decisions and supporting others. I was delighted with my class winner lines ups for both dogs and bitches, some hotly contested classes and tough choices for me throughout the day.

A lot of promise for this young light grizzle puppy bitch, one of the best for drive and movement today took her to first place, liked her head and expression framed by neat V shaped ears. Good front shoulder and rear angulation, coat just coming in, over flowing bodylines. Look forward to seeing her results under others in 2026.

Many thanks for the lovely entry, both in terms of quality and quantity. I thoroughly enjoyed my day with the Border Terriers. When I last judged I felt there were too many with houndy large ears, this did not seem to be replicated in today’s entry which was pleasing and expression was generally much improved. What I did notice was that front action is something that we need to watch. Being Manchester and the last Championship show pre Crufts there were quite a few dogs who had been stripped in preparation and quite a few out of coat. In part that did play a part in some of my fineer placings.

Many thanks to the committee of Bridgend and District Kennel Association for the invitation to judge Border Terriers at their well run and friendly show. My thanks also extend to the cheerful and efficient Stewards, and exhibitors, who appeared to take my decisions with good grace. All exhibits were sound in temperament and with no kinked tails or unacceptable bites.

An 11-month-old grizzle and tan bitch who strode into the ring putting her best foot forward from the start. Well-proportioned head with dark eye, large teeth and keen expression. Good reach of neck into well laid-back shoulders and with correct angulation fore and aft, which contributed to her excellent reach and drive. Shown fit and good for muscle with a racy hindquarters-narrow throughout with ribs well back and of good length. Shown today in a tight new coat with good thick skin and just right for bone. She moved fluidly and positively, consistently keeping her topline; a well-balanced bitch, who worked well with her handler. Pleased to award her Best of Breed and Best Puppy- she then was placed Group 2 in both Adult and Puppy Terrier Groups- Congratulations.

Crufts
6th Mar 2026
Judge: Mrs Hilary Gilpin (Otterbobs)
Thank you to the Crufts committee for inviting me to judge and bringing my appointment forward one year. Many thanks to Pam Cox and Judy Carr for the professional stewarding they provided.
I enjoyed a full day’s judging and was very pleased to hear the applause from around the ring when dogs were placed, good sportsmanship.
Out of 264 entries, I had one wry mouth, one kinked tail, 6 very underweight dogs none of them placed. Dogs that had no coat were penalised as were very thin pelts. As a dog groomer of 48 years, I know when coats are chalked, not nice to feel. One exhibit while on the table had only one testicle the owner was gobsmacked but felt it and agreed there was only one, I was blamed for having cold hands!!! what after handling dogs in previous classes, ten minutes later the said dog came back for me to check again and yes there were two. I was disgusted to find an exhibit with sores on both cheeks; I was told what happened. And I’m leaving it there.
Teeth were very clean, only one tooth lost in an oldie.
I thought movement really should have been better than it was today, as I said thin pelts and no coats were penalised.
If I repeat myself with the first two placings that’s because they were what I was looking for.

Thank you so much for inviting me to judge the Border Terriers at the Oswestry District Canine Society Open Show. Thank you to Richard Nightingale and his wife for stewarding for me and keeping everyone organised.
Wow, the quality of the entries was stunning. It made some choices extremely challenging. There is a lot of up-and-coming quality dogs on the way. Thank you so much for entering under me and intrusting me to go over your dogs.
