The Southern Border Terrier Club Open Show
15th Sep 2024
Judge: Mrs Sue Baxter (Mysulan/Sulan)
I must start by thanking the committee for the invitation to judge at this lovely venue. The weather was kind to us and judging was able to take place outside , a fact I know so many exhibitors enjoy. My thanks also must go to my stewards , Rachel and Rhianne Mitchell , they certainly kept things running smoothly and were a big help keeping me on track ! Thanks ladies!
As usual , my gratitude to all who gave me entries and were able to turn up on the day , all very much appreciated .
I was presented with an array of lovely specimens and some classes made for some tough decisions .Several times I wished there were more red cards to award. The standard , I found, was very good and there was quality in depth in most classes. All males were intact , I found no kinked tails and most mouths were acceptable , coats , as usual , were in differing stages of growth and texture . All were spannable.

another lovely puppy . 7 months old and well on her way … Just a delight to go over, super coat on excellently proportioned structure, beautiful straight front , just right ammount of bone , sweet head and expression . Ears of good size and well attached .. Good angles fore and aft , moved out very well , showing good reach and drive for one so young . The cherry on top was a short carroty tail …I consider myself lucky having so many lovely youngsters to go over but this one just could not be denied.. Pleased to award her Best Puppy in Show.

Judge: Amelie Smith (Alncroft)
Thank you very much to the WMTS society for inviting me to judge at their show once again. It was a pleasure officiating at such a well run show, organised by true terrier enthusiasts. I was very pleased with my entries for both Border and Jack Russell Terriers. I was very pleased with my principle winners. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the exhibitors for their entries.

Lovely young bitch who was balanced all through. Beautiful feminine head, broad skull flowing into a correct slightly narrower muzzle. Lovely eye and expression and with well set ears. Super length of neck with correct topline and tail set. Well boned and nice tight feet. Correct underline with good tuck up. Good strength in her rear quarters which were balanced with her forequarters. Harsh weatherproof coat, loose pelt and spanned easily. Very sound mover. A promising prospect. RBB, RBOB & BPIB.

The Midland Border Terrier Club Open Show
2nd Feb 2025
Judge: Mrs Laura Jordan-Smith (Jordith)
It is both an honour and a privilege to have been invited by the Midland Border Terrier Club committee to judge this open breed club show—my first at this level. I sincerely thank all the exhibitors who entered and took the time to attend at this lovely new venue. My gratitude also goes to my stewards, Peter and Martin, whose efficiency and support ensured the smooth running of the ring; their help was much appreciated.
Overall, most exhibits were in good condition, though a few were carrying excess weight or were simply too large to span. I observed only one kinked tail and two level bites. Given the time of year, it is unsurprising to find coats at various stages of growth, as exhibitors prepare for Crufts and the start of the new show season.

At just shy of 12 months, this lovely feminine grizzle bitch exudes type without being overdone in anyway. She has a beautiful otter head, with a strong scissor bite, and lovely small, neat ears. She has a good front, nice bone and stands on small, neat feet. Ribbed well back, she is easily spannable, with a strong loin and good angulation. A well-set, short carroty tail completes the overall picture. With a new coat coming through, her pelt is thick and loose. Clearly enjoying her day out today she moved with drive and purpose once she settled. Awarded Best Puppy Bitch & Best Puppy In Show.

Stunning 9 months old who immediately took my eye. She has a feminine head, broad skull with correct muzzle and lovely eyes to boot. Well placed neat ears. Enough neck leading to well laid shoulders; secure topline and tail set. Neat strong padded feet. Super tail. Impressive spanning. Loose pelt, harsh thick coat. Impressive mover demonstrating typical reach and drive. Clearly one to watch. Could not be denied. BB and BIS.
Crufts
6th Mar 2025
Judge: Mr David Hunt (Ottaswell)
It was a tremendous honour and a great privilege some 3 years ago to be asked by the Kennel Club to judge at Crufts in 2025. Having attended and enjoyed this show over many years it felt strange to be finally standing centre stage.
My grateful thanks to the exhibitors and handlers from both home and overseas for giving me a fantastic entry of 249 dogs making 279 entries. I wish to sincerely thank my 2 stewards Ken Francis and Bill Ashworth for organising the ring and me so efficiently and thus avoiding any delays between classes in what was a long and tiring day starting at 08.00. Thanks also to Joyce Martin for the excellent photographs.
I was looking for an exhibit that best fitted the standard and most importantly that they were spannable. With kennel cough widespread throughout the country I requested handlers show me the exhibits teeth to avoid possible further spread. On the day I tried to ensure that each dog was given equal time on the table and moving around the ring.
The general condition of most exhibits was fine with coats as usual at all stages and some appearing to have been stripped the day before. Movement was generally good at the rear but less so in front where several were loose and moving in various directions usually caused by poor shoulder construction. Feet were disappointing in some exhibits being spread and well down on their pasterns with thin pads. I found 2 kinked tails and in the mouths 2 undershot plus several with missing and misaligned teeth. All males were entire. Temperaments were good throughout the day.
I was pleased with my final lineups and delighted to see my Best of Breed make the shortlist and be awarded Group 4

13 month g&t of excellent quality who catches the eye. An ideal size and typical of this kennel. Has a classic head of good width with little stop and a strong muzzle. Her straight narrow front stands on tight, well padded feet. Good in shoulder and rib she looks balanced in profile and shows an excellent topline held correctly when using her super tail to move around the ring in true parallel fashion covering the ground well using her low set hocks. In good clean coat and pelt.

The East Anglia Border Terrier Club Championship Show
12th Apr 2025
Judge: Miss Jean Singh (Vandamere)
It was a pleasure to judge at this show. The sun was shining on this first outdoor show of the year. Many thanks to my stewards Rob and Julie.
I found two youngsters with just level mouths, one exhibit had a misaligned lower tooth and two exhibits with light eyes. Front movement is still a problem, what I did find alarming were a number of exhibits with large, thick set heavy ears. Some exhibits were lacking in body condition and muscle tone.

A well made youngster who was mature for age and was so clean to go over. Balanced, shapely, of a nice size and sporting a thick jacket with top and undercoat. Nothing really overdone, she was on her toeas, ready for the off and you could see her doing a good days work. Feminine but with the required strength. Strong in head, jaw , dention, eye and keen expression. Ample neck, with strength. Well made front assembly, clean shoulders and narrow front. Norow through a well ribbed body, presenting a pleasing top and underline. Nothing overdone in the rear. Her movement was excellent, which ultimately won her the CC & BOB. Powering around the ring, with reach and drive, true all ways. Such a disappointment to both myelf and the group judge that she couldn’t stay for the group.

I was so excited to be invited to give tickets for the first time so a big thank you to Driffield Committee for the invite but especially to the exhibitors for my fabulous entry
I found some really lovely dogs to go over and in some classes I wished I had more awards to give out , I was very pleased with my final line ups
Temperaments all day were very good. I didn't see one cross word between the dogs , Coats as always were varying and in some classes it was a consideration. The open and limit classes were of the highest quality and very enjoyable to judge
I thoroughly enjoyed my day and such a privilege to be able to go over all of your dogs , thank you

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge what turned out to be the last Joint Ch Show. I had a wonderful day, & I was very ably and efficiently aided by my two stewards Tracey Anscombe and Peter Armstrong & I send my thanks out to them again (shows can’t run without good stewards).
My main down side to a lot of the Borders I went over was the front movement (I’m not immune to this either)! This needs watching and careful breeding to try and improve on this fault - not easy I know, but something to aim for. Again very few Borders with a good thick pelt which we used to have. Top lines have much improved generally and good to see that most of the exhibits were in good fit/hard condition.
