Scottish Border Terrier Club Members Limited Show
26th Jan 2025
Judge: Mrs Katrina Golding (Beaconpike)
A big thank you to the Scottish BTC for the invitation to judge their members limited show. This was my first breed club show which I very much looked forward to after being asked previously, but I didn’t quite feel ready at the time. I needn’t have worried as I was made to feel very welcome by the friendly committee and exhibitors, there was a lovely atmosphere in and around the ring. A special mention to my steward Anne Gregory for ensuring everything was in order and keeping the ring running smoothly. Considering the time of year with Crufts approaching I was delighted to find correct double coats with good depth. I forgave dirty teeth in preference for correct bites, sadly I found a number that were disappointing along with small teeth. Movement was on the whole ok though I found some dogs coming towards me had loose fronts though they looked good in profile.

Blue and tan just 6months old, still very much a baby but showing lots of promise already. Nice head which is developing, correct bite, narrow throughout, straight front, he was standing on small neat feet with thick pads, he was shown in the best of coats, very balanced puppy for his age, good bend of stifle which he used to his advantage on the move, moved out soundly for one so young, pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog and Best Puppy in Show, I wish him luck in the future.

Crufts
6th Mar 2025
Judge: Mr David Hunt (Ottaswell)
It was a tremendous honour and a great privilege some 3 years ago to be asked by the Kennel Club to judge at Crufts in 2025. Having attended and enjoyed this show over many years it felt strange to be finally standing centre stage.
My grateful thanks to the exhibitors and handlers from both home and overseas for giving me a fantastic entry of 249 dogs making 279 entries. I wish to sincerely thank my 2 stewards Ken Francis and Bill Ashworth for organising the ring and me so efficiently and thus avoiding any delays between classes in what was a long and tiring day starting at 08.00. Thanks also to Joyce Martin for the excellent photographs.
I was looking for an exhibit that best fitted the standard and most importantly that they were spannable. With kennel cough widespread throughout the country I requested handlers show me the exhibits teeth to avoid possible further spread. On the day I tried to ensure that each dog was given equal time on the table and moving around the ring.
The general condition of most exhibits was fine with coats as usual at all stages and some appearing to have been stripped the day before. Movement was generally good at the rear but less so in front where several were loose and moving in various directions usually caused by poor shoulder construction. Feet were disappointing in some exhibits being spread and well down on their pasterns with thin pads. I found 2 kinked tails and in the mouths 2 undershot plus several with missing and misaligned teeth. All males were entire. Temperaments were good throughout the day.
I was pleased with my final lineups and delighted to see my Best of Breed make the shortlist and be awarded Group 4

An appealing 7 month b&t youngster who already carries lots of ticking. Correct size for his age, good head shape with little stop and wide muzzle. Narrowest of fronts with good depth of rib and a well carried short tail. Well schooled and moved out nicely both ways.
The Border Terrier Club Championship Show
29th Mar 2025
Judge: Janice Johnson (Ratcheugh)
My thanks to the Border Terrier Club for this appointment it was indeed an honour and privilege to judge this prestigious show in Border Country. To my stewards Judy and Pam for their efficiency and all the exhibitors who entered, thank you for giving me this opportunity to go over your dogs and accepting my judgement on the day.
I had the most enjoyable day going over some excellent examples of our breed. My feelings are we have a good future in some of our younger exhibits but, watch out for size and movement. For all exhibitors, we must remember the border terrier is a working breed and should be able to follow hounds, sound movement is essential. I love a good coat and thick pelt and today I had both in abundance, all mouths were correct and all, but a couple were spannable.

Thank you to everyone who entered on a Friday and gave me the biggest entry of the two groups on the day and the forth highest in the whole show! Pat and Paul my stewards were great and helped me to get through the dogs in an efficient way.
We were lucky enough to be outside on a perfect dog showing day weather wise.
Some super quality classes with hair splitting decisions and even lovely dogs unplaced. Whilst essentially a working terrier was a priority, I wanted my males, to look like males and my bitches easily recognisable as females, it sounds obvious but with some they could’ve passed for either.
Some really lovely dogs looked super stood, but failed on the move, not just coming and going, but more importantly to me, the side gait.
I think we need to be careful of mouths, I was surprised to find several with teeth out of line. Level bites, although allowed and not penalised on the day, some were in very young dogs and it makes me wonder if they will last.
Having said all that, I enjoyed my day and the dogs, who also seemed to enjoy being outside.

Thank you to the following.
SKC for inviting me to judge after my two previous appointments at Driffield were cancelled due to corvid restrictions and the storms.
The stewards who helped keeping the classes running smoothly at times we had to wait for exhibitors who were showing in the SKC Champ show in the adjacent ring.
To all the exhibitors who entered their dogs under me, I was looking for dogs that were fit for function for what they were originally bred for even though very few get the chance to carry this out.

I would like to thank the Scottish Border Terrier Club for asking me to judge at the Open Show. Thank you to the ladies for a super lunch and Bill Shorthose for being my Steward for the day.
As always movement was variable with some very strange front actions. I found two kinked tails, a lack of coats in some dogs and also untidy coats, all had to be considered in the placings. That said I had a lovely day and enjoyed going over all the dogs that were entered.

Thank you all for a wonderful entry especially for a Thursday, I found the Bitches better in Quality than the Dogs on the day, I feel I can speak little about what I found as I have worked them, shown them and bred them, But I wont criticize, has many showing this wonderful breed forgotten more than I know, but its my observation on the day,
There were a few I really liked but lacked jackets on the day, I found a few with ears to big, and some needed more power moving from behind, but that can be improved, please don't over stretch when you stacking them, And now my biggest bugbear please don't keep shoving bait into their mouths when a judge is trying to go over their heads this is happening a lot now why I don't know, never seen it so bad as lately but in most terrier exhibitors, moan over lol, Also thank you to both my stewards Gavin Argyle and Penny Winger, who done an amazing job Thank you both.

My thanks to the Border Union Agricultural Society for their kind invitation to judge their Golden Anniversary Championship show and also for the lovely gift. Thanks also to my two stewards, who kept the ring running smoothly throughout the day which meant we managed to finish just after 3pm in time for the group. I had a fantastic entry and would like to thank all exhibitors for the opportunity to go over their dogs and for the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted.
I did try to keep the judging in the large outdoor ring, but the weather didn’t really play ball on the day and we ended up in the smaller indoor ring in the tent. The large pole in the middle of the indoor ring wasn’t particularly helpful either, but I believe we managed OK, and there was sufficient room for me to assess the movement of all exhibits.
As you would expect, coats were at various stages but on the whole most were acceptable. All dogs were entire, there were no kinked tails and only one or two untidy mouths.
Border Union is one of my favourite shows and with some quality dogs to judge, I thoroughly enjoyed my day.

Judge: Mrs Jayne Gillam (Orenberg)
Thanks go to the Northern Border Terrier Club for inviting me judge their 53rd Championship Show, and to the exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to go over the good entry of Borders. Thanks also to my stewards Nicki Cummins, Julie Leckenby and Sarah Eccles who really did a fantastic job and kept everything running smoothly, I enjoyed my day immensely.
It was an extremely hot day and I was thankful we were inside the hall, the committee made sure doors were opened to ensure a through draft which made for a pleasant environment for the task in hand. No dogs appeared stressed by the heat when they were being shown, although some dogs did seem less than enthusiastic in the ring.
I found some really good profile movement, but good movement fore and aft was in the minority, and in some classes non-existent.
Overall some very good coats and pelts and good presentation, some really good tails too, just a few long thin tails. Although found three kinked tails on this occasion, teeth seemed cleaner and only a few feet spoilt by overly long nails.

nearly 12 months. B&T. Very different type to my winner. Overall smaller, very smart and well presented in good coat and pelt and stood well on small neat feet. Heavier across the shoulders with a shorter rounder rib and shorter stride than 1. A tad harder to span but had a super firm topline and tailset.

A smaller framed B & T male, who had a pleasing head, of correct proportions and adequate strength. Ok though neck. He had a well made racey rear assembly and was sporting a well presented harsh jacket. For me a little more length of rib / body would finish the picture.
