Darlington Championship Show
13th Sep 2025
Judge: Mrs. Carolyn Richardson (Staynorwood)
I would like to thank Darlington Championship Show Committee for inviting me to judge my first appointment to give CC's. Thank you to my very capable Stewards, Katrina and Margaret, for keeping everything moving and running to time. Generally the condition of the dogs today was very good with many missing out on the top spot due to the strength of quality present. In the Bitch classes, I had some difficult decisions to make as several classes had many quality exhibits with lots of promise, splitting hairs at times in more than one class. I was very pleased with my principle winners on the day.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the committee for inviting me to judge the Border Terriers at their show. Although the journey the preceding day was lengthy, it proved to be truly worthwhile. I was privileged to assess an outstanding entry of high-quality dogs and bitches, and I am grateful to all the exhibitors for affording me this opportunity. While the size of the ring presented some logistical challenges, the Border Terrier community adapted admirably and ensured the event ran smoothly. The committee demonstrated excellent attentiveness throughout, as did the two stewards who supported me during the show. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this event.

(Blue and Tan Bitch) Impressed with her feminine head, complemented by neatly set ears and a correct mouth. Her keen expression was particularly notable. She possesses the correct length of neck, which flows seamlessly into well-placed shoulders. Her ribs are flat, and she maintains a narrow profile throughout, making her easily spanned. The well-angulated rear enables her to move efficiently. Additionally, she features a great harsh coat and a loose pelt.

My sincere thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege to go over your dogs Thank you all for the wonderful entry in terms of numbers & the depth & quality I had to judge, however I did have concerns about the size & movement of some of the exhibits & found a couple of mouths that were not quite correct A huge thank you to my two stewards Bridget Singh & Anita Taylor for their help on the day

Thanks to the exhibitors for giving me such a good entry, mid-week and in the depths of Wales! A lot of absentees in the dogs but some outstanding bitch classes which were a fascinating puzzle to sort out. There were some very nice dogs of good type but overall I think we are in danger of losing some of the essence of the breed. They are essentially working terriers which to me implies a certain outlook on the world. I try not to penalise exhibits for over fussy handling but I prefer to see a dog that can stand and show on its’ own, that is presented in fit condition and a reasonably tidy coat, and that covers the ground without fuss and flap. We were given an excellent ring, movement in general was better than I had expected. Heads were in general OK but many lacking strength over the jaw. I found virtually all dogs spannable though some were a bit heavy over the rib, pelts were also generally good. The standard talks about eyes, ears, feet & tails, these are all important for different reasons but are often ignored. Very good feet were a rarity as were good tails, many being rather long and some a bit too gay. Having moaned about all these bits I would say that there were some excellent exhibits that were a joy to go over and which bode well for the future of the breed.

7mth blue and tan bitch, another in super condition and coat. I liked her length of body and good level topline, which she held on the move. Feminine head, with dark eye and good teeth, loved her expression. Didn’t move quite as well as 1 today.

Well balanced with moderate angles front and rear, standing four square on neat well padded feet. Good depth to ribs which were carried well back . Easily spannable, good length to tail which was carried well on the move. Excellent harsh coat and thick pelt. A real showman! BPB

I want to thank the society for inviting me to judge Border Terriers for the first time. I was absolutely thrilled with my entry, and I had some lovely exhibits to go over and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was pleased to see all had good bites, all had good temperaments and most were in good coat. A few, particularly the males, were verging on too big for me. Also, I feel I should urge exhibitors not to run with their dogs, it makes the movement harder to assess and can cause the dogs not to stride out properly. Thank you all for entering under me and thank you to my brilliant stewards Helen and Kev for keeping the ring running efficiently and smoothly.

Best Puppy What a beautiful blue and tan B, at just 8 months old she is an ideal size and holds a beautiful outline. A lovely head with dark eyes and a beautiful expression, stood on straight legs with compact and sturdy feet. Her hind legs are racy and beautifully angulated, with a lovely tail set, and she was presented in good, muscly condition with a crisp coat. Her movement is parallel with rear drive. A very flashy young lady, which ultimately pushed her to the top spot. Pleased to award her BPIB, and later she was awarded Terrier Puppy Group 1, congratulations!
