Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge at this level for the first time, and also to my very efficient ring steward who kept things running smoothly. I had a lovely day and felt it was a great honour and responsibility. I really appreciated each and every entry, and had some lovely exhibits to go over, the depth of quality in some classes meaning that some nice dogs went cardless. Coats were understandably at different stages, and although this has no bearing on the construction of the dog, a good coat does complete the picture of what is essentially a working terrier.

A confident 6 month old grizzle and tan who was enjoying his day out and moving very accurately for one so young. He is built on narrow lines, with a lovely straight front, well laid back shoulders, and ribbed well back. He has a very good head with short, strong muzzle and big, white teeth. Very easy to span.

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for their very warm welcome and hospitality, and the exhibitors for their entries and generous applause for the winners. There was a fabulous atmosphere throughout the day which made it a real pleasure.
Having last had my hands on the breed at this level in October 2017 I am concerned about just how narrow some of the dogs are. Whilst the breed standard calls for the body to be ‘deep, narrow, and fairly long’ it should not be taken to the point of exaggeration. That being said my winners are very pleasing, well balanced specimens without recourse to any exaggeration and in my opinion fit for the original purpose of a Border Terrier.

This baby is oozing breed type. I loved his size and balance. Superb otter head, keen dark eye, strong muzzle and good dentition. He has a correct front, excellent shoulder placement, deep but narrow rib easily spanned. He doesn’t make the best of himself free standing but strode out round the ring full of confidence and with a level topline and good drive from behind. Still very much a baby he has so much promise. I’d like to thank the Committee for their invitation to judge this show. As always it was very well organised and there was a very hospitable welcome. Thanks to my steward who kept things moving along. Thank you also to the exhibitors for the excellent entry and, despite a few absentees, I had some lovely Borders to go over. Coats were very varied; mouths were good and there were no kinked tails. Thank you to all the exhibitors and spectators who came and supported the show and created such a good atmosphere.

6-month-old Grizzle and Tan. Very nice head on this youngster. Short strong muzzle with good dentition. He has a narrow front and is ribbed well back. He is very easily spanned and had a good loin and tail set. He moved very confidently around the ring although his front movement was a little loose at times however I’m sure that will tighten up with maturity. Good coat and loose pelt.

Lovely otter shaped head, good dentition, good ears. Good reach of neck to well laid shoulders, spanned well, in fantastic jacket and pelt. Good rear angulation, moved sound, just preferred the cheekiness of his sister in the puppy challenge.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge the first of their centenary shows this year and for their warm welcome and hospitality. Thank you to my two stewards, Judy Carr and Judith Fawcett who had the ring running like clockwork, which enabled me to get on with the job of judging a large quality entry. Thank you to all the exhibitors for giving me such a wonderful entry of 143 dogs, sadly the serve flooding at the time made for several absentees, but I’d like to thank everyone who braved the floods and made the journey. This was my first breed club appointment, which was a truly memorable experience and one I won’t forget. Thank you for the lovely gifts which I will treasure. I was generally very pleased with the overall quality of the dogs entered under me. Coats were at varying stages, and some dogs paid the price today. The quality in some classes made for some difficult decisions, especially in the limit/open classes, and I would have liked more first places.

at just 7mths, loved this one for size, lovely head still developing, ears well placed, with excellent dentition. Good reach of neck with nice straight front, good shoulders, and is narrow throughout. Ribs carried well back, in excellent coat with a thick pliable pelt. Well Handled and moved confidently for one so young. One to watch for the future BPD and BPIS

Firstly, I would like to thank the Kennel Club for allowing me the honour of judging this Border Terrier Centenary year. I also thank my excellent stewards for keeping me on track and to everybody who gave me such a fantastic entry, both in numbers and quality across all classes. To be blunt, I don't think I have ever seen and enjoyed such a very high quality entry before. Unfortunately many good exhibits went home unrewarded. Several classes the placed exhibits could have all stood in first place. I really was splitting hairs. I can honestly say that I really enjoyed myself and hope everybody else did too. I'd also like to thank Joyce Martin and my son, Laurence Jackson, for the excellent photographs which has made the writing of this critique so much easier. I understand Laurence also live-streamed the CC's and BOB – technology far above me – but thanks!
