From a class of individuals showing plenty of potential it was easy to fall for this precocious, busy juvenile. Certainly does not lack confidence. Just right for her age and while she may be young and therefore her performance understandably not completely polished, her type and style is undeniable. Head and expression engaging, she flows from neck into shoulder through to an excellent topline. Both front and rear assembly are well formed and balanced. On the move she may be a little puppyish but she holds her outline and steps out with her feet placed correctly. I think with normal development she is one to watch. BP

Grizzle, a very nice youngster, lovely head, good eye, good width of under jaw with an excellent bite, narrow through the front, good shoulder, nice body length, super coat and pelt, well muscled hind quarters for age, very sound fore & aft, just needs to settle a little, which I am sure will come with age, must have a bright future
West Midlands Terrier Society Open Show
15th Feb 2025
Judge: Glen Birrell
I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the West Midlands Terrier Society and The Border Terrier Club for choosing me for this appointment, my first breed supported show.
Also thank you to all the exhibitors that chose to give me an entry and allowed me to go over their exhibits.
Today was a cooler day so I asked all classes to warm up with two laps of the ring so they could show themselves to their best.
There were some very good exhibits for me to judge, and there were many hair splitting decisions to be made for the placements in some classes.
Mouths were good in all exhibits and there were no noticeable kinks in tails. One thing we do need to keep an eye on is being able to span a Border Terrier so they would be able to do the job they were built for.

9 months. When standing her overall balance screams breed type. Headpiece is attractive giving typical expression. Neck is well placed leading to well set shoulders. Good bone throughout and alike everything else, nothing is overstated. Secure topline; well set tail set. Spanned well. Correct hindquarters. In the best of jackets. Moved steadily and is certainly fit for purpose. Clearly more to come. RBB, BPIS and RBIS.

Crufts
6th Mar 2025
Judge: Mr David Hunt (Ottaswell)
It was a tremendous honour and a great privilege some 3 years ago to be asked by the Kennel Club to judge at Crufts in 2025. Having attended and enjoyed this show over many years it felt strange to be finally standing centre stage.
My grateful thanks to the exhibitors and handlers from both home and overseas for giving me a fantastic entry of 249 dogs making 279 entries. I wish to sincerely thank my 2 stewards Ken Francis and Bill Ashworth for organising the ring and me so efficiently and thus avoiding any delays between classes in what was a long and tiring day starting at 08.00. Thanks also to Joyce Martin for the excellent photographs.
I was looking for an exhibit that best fitted the standard and most importantly that they were spannable. With kennel cough widespread throughout the country I requested handlers show me the exhibits teeth to avoid possible further spread. On the day I tried to ensure that each dog was given equal time on the table and moving around the ring.
The general condition of most exhibits was fine with coats as usual at all stages and some appearing to have been stripped the day before. Movement was generally good at the rear but less so in front where several were loose and moving in various directions usually caused by poor shoulder construction. Feet were disappointing in some exhibits being spread and well down on their pasterns with thin pads. I found 2 kinked tails and in the mouths 2 undershot plus several with missing and misaligned teeth. All males were entire. Temperaments were good throughout the day.
I was pleased with my final lineups and delighted to see my Best of Breed make the shortlist and be awarded Group 4

At 9 month this g&t is developing nicely. Of a useful size, nothing is exaggerated and her whole body is as it should be at this age. Has an appealing head of good width and a strong muzzle, a good reach of neck and nicely placed shoulder. Her body is well proportioned and correctly shaped. With a jacket that is loose she has a thick and harsh coat. I liked the way she moved around the ring extending well in front and at the rear. B.P.B. and B.P.I.B.
The Border Terrier Club Championship Show

Judge: Janice Johnson (Ratcheugh)
My thanks to the Border Terrier Club for this appointment it was indeed an honour and privilege to judge this prestigious show in Border Country. To my stewards Judy and Pam for their efficiency and all the exhibitors who entered, thank you for giving me this opportunity to go over your dogs and accepting my judgement on the day.
I had the most enjoyable day going over some excellent examples of our breed. My feelings are we have a good future in some of our younger exhibits but, watch out for size and movement. For all exhibitors, we must remember the border terrier is a working breed and should be able to follow hounds, sound movement is essential. I love a good coat and thick pelt and today I had both in abundance, all mouths were correct and all, but a couple were spannable.

The East Anglia Border Terrier Club Championship Show

Judge: Miss Jean Singh (Vandamere)
It was a pleasure to judge at this show. The sun was shining on this first outdoor show of the year. Many thanks to my stewards Rob and Julie.
I found two youngsters with just level mouths, one exhibit had a misaligned lower tooth and two exhibits with light eyes. Front movement is still a problem, what I did find alarming were a number of exhibits with large, thick set heavy ears. Some exhibits were lacking in body condition and muscle tone.

a smart looking puppy, balanced appearance presented in good coat and condition. Her head is a nice otter shape, with little stop and a short strong muzzle. Bite was good, front was straight and has good bone. She has a nice reach of neck, straight top line and a carrot shaped tail. Pleasing in rib with a strong loin. Movement was good both ways. Thank you to everyone who entered on a Friday and gave me the biggest entry of the two groups on the day and the forth highest in the whole show! Pat and Paul my stewards were great and helped me to get through the dogs in an efficient way.
We were lucky enough to be outside on a perfect dog showing day weather wise.
Some super quality classes with hair splitting decisions and even lovely dogs unplaced. Whilst essentially a working terrier was a priority, I wanted my males, to look like males and my bitches easily recognisable as females, it sounds obvious but with some they could’ve passed for either.
Some really lovely dogs looked super stood, but failed on the move, not just coming and going, but more importantly to me, the side gait.
I think we need to be careful of mouths, I was surprised to find several with teeth out of line. Level bites, although allowed and not penalised on the day, some were in very young dogs and it makes me wonder if they will last.
Having said all that, I enjoyed my day and the dogs, who also seemed to enjoy being outside.

The Midland Border Terrier Club Partnership Championship Show
8th May 2025
Judge: Mr John Bainbridge (Risdene)
Many thanks to the Midland committee for this appointment which l thoroughly enjoyed, despite the weather which sent us indoors after bitches. Many thanks to my stewards. As an aside l was pleased to see that moderately short tails are coming back! I was also pleased to find that three of the youngsters from the previous time l judged had developed as hoped and received top honours today. The exception was the outstanding dog which took BIS, my first time judging this one and what a treat! This blue and tan dog meets the standard so well, essentially a working terrier, the most important requirement of our breed, but with the quality of a top show dog .
