First Place in Open - Bitch, Judge: Dr Ian Gabriel (Gabybryl)
This was my first-time awarding Challenge Certificates in Border Terriers and many thanks to those that entered under a non-breed specialist, and well done for braving what was a bitter wind. If this was a representative entry, then I am heartened by the general health and condition of the breed. Good coats, good pelts and super large dentition were the majority. There are some nice youngsters in the lower classes. Just two points as a non-specialist if I might be permitted, firstly the standard calls for a small ear and I found quite a few otherwise nice exhibits with large houndy ears which did somewhat detract from the overall expression. Secondly several dogs broke quite markedly at the front pastern which spoilt the overall impression on the move, these points need watching.
This bitch headed a nice class of bitches. She is a lovely example of a border and is very feminine yet with no loss of stature or strength. I was drawn to her head and expression which is exactly what I was looking for today. It is of ideal proportions, full of type, has strength but in no way could she be mistaken for anything other than a bitch. Lovely eye and neat small ears. Good length of neck into good shoulders. Nice bone. Correct topline and tail set. She can stand herself a little wide at times but on the move is very correct coming at you. Nice hind quarters. Good pelt and harsh topcoat although I suspect she might be soon for a coat change. A very showy bitch who was not fazed by the weather and moved very well in all directions. Please to award her the CC.
